Description

電池モジュール
 本発明は、複数の電池が筐体に収容された電池モジュールに関し、特に、電池から排出されたガスを、安全に筐体外に排出する排出機構を備えた電池モジュールに関する。
 複数の電池を筐体に収容した電池モジュールは、種々の機器、車両等の電源として広く使用されている。電池モジュール内では、汎用的な電池を並列または直列に接続することによって、所望の電圧及び容量が得られる。この電池モジュールを種々組み合わせることによって、多種多様な用途に対応可能とする技術が採用され始めている。電池モジュールに収容する電池を高性能化すると、電池モジュール自身の小型・軽量化を図ることができるため、電池パックを組み立てる際の作業性や、車両等の限られた空間へ搭載する際の自由度を向上させることができる。
 電池モジュールに収容する電池の高性能化に伴い、電池自身の安全性確保に加え、複数の電池が集合した電池モジュールにおける安全性確保も重要になってくる。特に、電池内での内部短絡等による発熱でガスが発生し、安全弁が作動して高温ガスが電池外に放出された場合、周辺の電池が高温ガスに曝されると、正常な電池にまで影響を与え、連鎖的な劣化を引き起こすおそれがある。
 このような問題に対して、特許文献1には、複数の電池を収容しているケース内に区画壁を設けることによって、電池を収容する電池室と、電池から放出される高温ガスを排気する排出室とに区画するとともに、電池の安全弁の開口部を排気室に連通させた電源装置が記載されている。排気機構をこのように構成することによって、電池の安全弁から放出される高温ガスを、電池室に流入させることなく排気室に流入させて、ケースの排出口から外部に排出させることができる。これにより、周辺の電池が、異常電池から放出された高温ガスに曝させるのを防止できるため、正常な電池に与える影響を低減することができる。
特開2007-27011号公報
 特許文献1に記載された排気機構では、排気室を密閉構造にすることによって、電池の開口部から排出室に流入したガスが再び電池室に流入するのを防止している。したがって、発生したガスによって正常な電池が連鎖的に劣化するのを防止できる点では優れている。
 しかしながら、排気室に流入したガスは、1000℃以上の高温になる場合もあり、排気室内に流入したガスが酸素と反応して燃焼するおそれがある。その場合、排気室が高温に曝されるため、依然として電池室に収容された電池に影響を及ぼすおそれが残る。
 また、複数に並べられた電池の電極の上に平行に排気室を配置するため、電池モジュールの体積が増大し、電池モジュールの単位体積当りの電力量が低減するという課題が残る。
 それ故に、本発明の目的は、電池モジュールの体積増加を極力抑制しながら、異常電池から排出された高温ガスを、他の正常な電池に影響を与えることなく筐体外に排出させることのできる安全性の高い電池モジュールを提供することにある。
 本発明に係る電池モジュールは、開口部と内部で発生したガスを排出する排出口とを有する筐体と、内部で発生したガスを排出するための開放部が設けられた端子板を有し、端子板を開口部側に向けた状態で筐体の内部に配置される複数の電池と、開口部を覆うように筐体に取り付けられ、平板部と、平板部を含む平面から筐体の内方側に突出して、電池の端子板に接続される複数の凸部とを有する蓋体とを備える。
 本発明によれば、集電板に形成された複数の凸部の間にガスの流路を形成することができるため、電池モジュールの体積増加を極力抑制し、異常電池から排出される高温ガスを、他の正常な電池に影響を与えることなく筐体外に排出することができる。したがって、単位体積当りの容量が大きく、かつ、安全性の高い電池モジュールを実現できる。

 図1は、第1の実施形態に係る電池モジュールに使用される電池100の構成を模式的に示した断面図である。なお、本発明の電池モジュールに使用される電池は、ノート型パソコン等の携帯用電子機器の電源として単体でも使用できる電池であってもよい(以下、電池モジュールに使用する電池を、「素電池」と呼ぶ)。この場合、高性能の汎用電池を、電池モジュールの素電池として使用することができるため、電池モジュールの高性能化、低コスト化をより容易に図ることができる。
 本発明の電池モジュールに使用される素電池100には、例えば、図1に示すような、円筒形のリチウムイオン二次電池を採用することができる。このリチウムイオン二次電池は、内部短絡等の発生により電池内の圧力が上昇したときに、発生したガスを電池外に放出する安全機構を備えている。以下、図1を参照しながら、素電池100の具体的な構成を説明する。
 図1に示すように、正極1と負極2とがセパレータ3を介して捲回された電極群4が、非水電解液とともに、電池ケース7に収容されている。電極群4の上下には、絶縁板9及び10が配置されている。正極1は、正極リード5を介してフィルタ12に接合され、負極2は、負極リード6を介して負極端子を兼ねる電池ケース7の底部に接合されている。
 フィルタ12は、インナーキャップ13に接続され、インナーキャップ13の突起部は、金属製の弁板14に接合されている。さらに、弁板14は、正極端子を兼ねる端子板8に接続されている。端子板8、弁板14、インナーキャップ13、及びフィルタ12が一体となって、ガスケット11を介して、電池ケース7の開口部を封口している。
 素電池100に内部短絡等が発生して、素電池100内の圧力が上昇すると、弁板14が端子板8に向かって膨らむ。弁板14が膨らむことによって、インナーキャップ13と弁板14との接合がはずれると、電流経路が遮断される。さらに素電池100内の圧力が上昇すると、弁板14が破断する。これによって、素電池100内に発生したガスは、フィルタ12の貫通孔12a、インナーキャップ13の貫通孔13a、弁板14に生じた裂け目、そして、端子板8の開放部8aを介して、外部へ排出される。
 なお、素電池100内に発生したガスを外部に排出する安全機構は、図1に示した構造に限定されず、他の構造のものであってもよい。
 図2は、第1の実施形態に係る電池モジュールの外観を模式的に示した斜視図であり、図3は、図2に示したIII-IIIラインに沿う断面図である。
 図2及び図3に示すように、電池モジュール200は、筐体130と、筐体130内に収容される複数の素電池100と、素電池100を保持する電池保持部材110と、筐体130の開口部を覆うように取り付けられる蓋体120とを備える。
 筐体130は、一面が開放された直方体箱形形状を有する。側面の開口部側部分に電池モジュール200内で発生したガスを排出するための排出口131が設けられている。筐体130は、各々の端子板8を開口部側に向けた状態で、複数の素電池100を収容している。
 電池保持部材110は、複数の素電池100を収容するための複数の電池収容部111を有する。電池収容部111は、電池ケース7の外形に対応する孔であり、電池収容部111の内径は電池ケース7の外形とほぼ等しく、電池収容部111の深さは電池ケースの外周壁の高さとほぼ等しい。したがって、図3に示すように、素電池100を電池収容部111に挿入すると、端子板8の一部が電池収容部111から突出し、電池ケース7の外面と電池収容部111の内周面とが密接した状態となる。電池保持部材110によってこのように素電池100を保持すると、素電池100の開放部8aからガスが放出された場合に、放出されたガスが電池保持部材110の上端、つまり、素電池100の電池ケース7の側面上端よりも下部に回り込むことが防止されるので、ガスを排出した素電池100から他の素電池100への類焼を防ぐことができる。また、電池ケース7の外面と電池収容部111の内周壁とが密接していることから、電池保持部材110を熱伝導性を有する材料で作成することによって、電池保持部材110に熱緩衝材としての機能を付与することもできる。
 蓋体120は、筐体130の開口部を覆うように取り付けられる部材であるが、同時に集電板としての機能も有する。蓋体120は、導電性を有する材料よりなり、平板部121と、平板部121を含む平面から筐体130の内方側へと突出する複数のスポット状の凸部122とを有する。複数のスポット状の凸部122は、蓋体120に分散して設けられている。凸部122の先端には、平坦面が形成されており、この平坦面に素電池100の端子板8が接合されている。蓋体120に分散させて設けた凸部122と端子板8とを接合すると、凸部122間に形成される連続的な空間によって、蓋体120と、素電池100を収容した電池保持部材110との間に、端子板8から筐体130側面の排出口131に至る流路が形成される。尚、本実施形態では、素電池100の数と凸部122の数とは等しく、素電池100と凸部122とが一対一で対応している。
 図4は、電池の開放部から排出されるガスの流路を示した図である。
 上述したように、素電池100の正極端子と蓋体120の凸部122との接続部分はガスが通り難く、凸部122間に挟まれた空間はガスが通り易い。そのため、図4に示すように、ある素電池100の開放部8aから排出されたガスは、凸部122に形成される空間を通じて、筐体130の排出口131から外部へと排気される。
 かかる構成によれば、複数の素電池100を筐体130内に密閉するための蓋体120の構造によって、素電池100の上部にガスの流路を形成することができるので、電池モジュール200の体積増加を極力抑制しつつ、異常電池から排出された高温ガスを、筐体130外に排出させることのできる安全性の高い電池モジュールを実現できる。また、蓋体120は、集電板としての機能を兼ね備えているので、複数の素電池100を用いて所望の電圧及び容量を実現する電池モジュールに好適である。
 (第2の実施形態)
 図5は、第2の実施形態に係る電池モジュールの外観を模式的に示した斜視図である。本実施形態に係る電池モジュール300は、蓋体140の形状の面で第1の実施形態に係る電池モジュール200と相違する。以下の説明では、本実施形態と第1の実施形態との相違点を中心に説明する。
 第1の実施形態に係る蓋体120は、素電池100に接続するための複数のスポット状の凸部122が分散して設けられていたのに対し、本実施形態に係る蓋体140では、平板部141を含む平面から突出する直線状の凸部142がストライプ状に設けられており、蓋体140がコルゲート状に形成されている。素電池100の正極端子は、第1の実施形態と同様に、凸部142の先端面に接続されるが、本実施形態では、1つの凸部142に対して複数の素電池100が接続される。尚、筐体130に設けられる排出口131は、筐体130の幅方向のほぼ全体にわたって設けられている。本実施形態に係る電池モジュール300においても、隣接する凸部142間に形成される空間によって、素電池100の正極端子から筐体130の排出口131に至る流路が形成される。したがって、本実施形態に係る構成によっても、電池モジュール300の体積増加を極力抑制しつつ、異常電池から排出された高温ガスを筐体130外に排出できる安全性の高い電池モジュール300を実現できる。更に、本実施形態では、隣接する凸部142で挟まれた直線状の空間が排出口131へと至るガス流路となるが、このガス流路が電池の整列位置とずれているため、異常電池から排出されたガスが他の正常な電池に影響を与えることが防止される。
 (その他の変形例)
 尚、上記の各実施形態において、蓋体は集電板としての機能も兼ね備えているため、蓋体は導電性材料で形成されているが、蓋体120の外面を絶縁するための絶縁部材を更に設けても良い。例えば、銅板等の導電性材料により形成した蓋体120の外面に、絶縁材料をコーティングしたり、蓋体120の外面を樹脂製の絶縁膜で覆ったりしても良い。また、金属と樹脂のクラッド材としてもよい。
 また、上記の各実施形態において、筐体に設ける排出口の数、大きさ、形成位置は任意であり、異常電池から排出されるガスを速やかに筐体外部に排出できるものであれば良い。
 更に、上記の各実施形態において、凸部間に形成される空間を電池モジュールの冷却用流路として使用することができる。この場合、筐体または蓋体に、冷却用の媒体を流入させる流入口と排出用の排出口とを設け、凸部間に形成される空間を介して流入口から排出口へと至る流路を形成する。これらの流入口及び排出口は、上述した異常時のガス排出口と兼用しても良い。
 更に、上記の各実施形態においては、スポット状または直線状の凸部を例示したが、凸部同士の間に流路が形成される限り、凸部の形状は特に限定されない。
 本発明は、自動車、電動バイク又は電動遊具等の駆動用電源として有用である。

Claims (6)

  1.  電池モジュールであって、
     開口部と内部で発生したガスを排出する排出口とを有する筐体と、
     内部で発生したガスを排出するための開放部が設けられた端子板を有し、前記端子板を前記開口部側に向けた状態で前記筐体の内部に配置される複数の電池と、
     前記開口部を覆うように前記筐体に取り付けられ、平板部と、前記平板部を含む平面から前記筐体の内方側に突出して、前記電池の前記端子板に接続される複数の凸部とを有する蓋体とを備える、電池モジュール。
  2.  前記蓋体には、直線状の前記凸部がストライプ状に延びるように形成されており、
     前記凸部の各々に対して、複数の前記電池の前記端子板が接続され、
     前記平板部と前記凸部とで前記排気口に向かう排気路を形成する、請求項1に記載の電池モジュール。
  3.  前記蓋体には、前記電池の位置に対応してスポット状の前記凸部が分散して形成されており、
     前記凸部の各々に対して、1つの前記電池の前記端子板が接続され、
     前記平板部と前記凸部とで前記排気口に向かう排気路を形成する、請求項1に記載の電池モジュール。
  4.  前記筐体内に配置され、前記複数の電池の隙間を埋める電池保持部を更に備える、請求項2または3のいずれかに記載の電池モジュール。
  5.  前記蓋体は、前記複数の電池の端子板に電気接続されて、前記複数の電池を並列接続で集電する、請求項2または3のいずれかに記載の電池モジュール。
  6.  前記蓋体は、導電性を有する材料によって形成されており、
     前記蓋体の外面を覆う絶縁性部材が更に設けられる、請求項5に記載の電池モジュール。
