Description

立体映像制御装置 (3D image control apparatus)及び方法
 本発明は、インパルス型表示装置を用いて表示される映像を立体映像として視聴可能な立体映像制御装置及び方法に関する。
 映像表示装置で右眼用映像(right eye image)と左眼用映像(left eye image)とを時分割で交互に表示し、その切換えに同期して左右のシャッタを交互に開閉するシャッタ眼鏡を通して映像を見ることで、立体映像が視聴可能な立体映像視聴システムが知られている。
 下記特許文献1には、右眼用映像と左眼用映像とを2フレーム毎に交互に表示させることにより、フレームレートを高めたときに発生するクロストークを抑制した立体映像表示装置が記載されている。

 インパルス型表示装置で表示された立体映像を、液晶シャッタメガネを通して、観測映像として立体視する場合の課題について説明する。表示装置は、マトリクス状に配置された画素を、所定のアドレス期間(走査選択期間)毎に、走査ライン上の画素を順次選択することにより、1フレームの映像を形成する。インパルス型表示装置とは、アドレス期間で点灯された画素の輝度が1フレームに亘ってホールドされることなく、アドレス期間内で画素の点灯及び消灯が行われる方式で映像を形成する表示装置である。アドレス期間の始まりに同期して点灯した画素の輝度は、映像信号に基いた輝度まで達し、その後アドレス期間の終了に同期した消灯により、それぞれの表示素子固有の、1フレーム期間より短い残光期間を経てゼロとなる。代表的なものとしては、CRTやFED(電界放出型ディスプレイ)、DLP(Digital Light Processing)である。

 液晶シャッタは、ノーマリホワイトモードの場合には、閉から開の応答速度(立上り期間)が開から閉の応答速度(立下り期間)よりも遅く、それぞれ2.5ms、500μsec程度である。ノーマリブラックモードの場合は、立上りと立下りとが逆の関係となる。
 シャッタの立上り及び立下り期間の両方を垂直ブランキング期間(以下、ブランキング期間)内に収めようとすると、ブランキング期間が垂直走査期間の1/4以上を占めることになる。その結果、水平走査期間が短くなるため、パルス幅変調により階調表示する場合には、表示輝度が低下するとともにダイナミックレンジも狭くなる。
 図8(b)に示すように、ブランキング期間をシャッタの立下り期間に一致するように設定すると、シャッタの立上り期間の2msec分は表示期間に入り込んでしまう。その結果、シャッタ透過率は30%減少し、観測映像としては、図8(c)のように、画面の上部280ライン分の領域に帯状の暗い部分が発生する。
 また、同様に、ノーマリブラックモードの場合、ブランキング期間をシャッタの立上り期間に一致するように設定し、次のブランキング期間にシャッタが閉じるように設定すると、シャッタの立下り期間の2msec分は表示期間に入り込んでしまう。その結果、シャッタ透過率は30%減少し、観測映像としては、図8(c)とは逆に、画面の下部280ライン分の領域に帯状の暗い部分が発生する。
 従来のインパルス型表示装置と液晶シャッタメガネからなる立体映像視聴システムでは、このような観測映像の画面内での輝度の不均一が生じていた。
 本発明の立体映像制御装置は、インパルス型の表示手段に右眼用映像と左眼用映像とを時分割で交互に表示させ、その切換えに同期して、シャッタ眼鏡の左右のシャッタを交互に開閉させることにより、立体映像を視聴させる立体映像制御装置であって、
 立体映像を表示させるための映像信号を入力する入力手段と、
 前記映像信号から右眼用映像及び左眼用映像を表示させるための輝度信号を生成して前記表示手段に出力する映像処理手段とを有し、
 前記表示手段は、所定の垂直走査期間で、走査開始する走査ラインから走査終了する走査ラインまで、走査ラインを順次選択することにより画面上に映像を形成し、
 前記映像処理手段は、前記走査開始する走査ライン及び前記走査終了する走査ラインの少なくとも何れかから所定数の走査ラインの該走査ライン上の画素の輝度を、各走査ラインの位置に応じて、前記所定数の走査ライン以外の走査ライン上の画素に対して、相対的に増加させるように前記映像信号を補正することを特徴とする。
 本発明によれば、表示装置の画面領域に応じて映像信号を補正することにより、インパルス型表示装置と液晶シャッタメガネからなる立体映像視聴システムで生じる観測映像の画面内での輝度の不均一を抑制することができる。その結果、高品位な立体視を可能とする立体映像制御装置が提供される。

 以下、図面を用いて本発明の実施の形態について説明する。本発明は、概略すると、液晶シャッタ眼鏡のシャッタの立上り期間又は立下り期間における透過率不足分を表示装置側で補償することにある。即ち、立上り期間又は立下り期間に相当する期間に走査される垂直ライン上の画素の輝度を、その垂直ラインの位置又は走査の順番に応じて、その垂直ライン以外の垂直ライン上の画素の輝度に対して、相対的に単調増加させることにある。
 また、立上り期間及び立下り期間の両方に相当する期間に走査される垂直ライン上の画素の輝度を、その垂直ラインの位置又は走査の順番に応じて、その垂直ライン以外の垂直ライン上の画素の輝度に対して、相対的に単調増加させてもよい。
 (実施例1)
 図1は、本発明に係る立体映像視聴システムのブロック図で、立体映像制御装置1、表示装置2及び液晶シャッタ眼鏡3からなる。
 表示装置2は、インパルス型の表示装置で、表面伝導型電子放出ディスプレイパネル(以下、表示パネル)201と、表示パネルを駆動するためのXドライバ203及びYドライバ202とからなる。表示パネルの構成と製造法については、特開2000-250463に詳しく開示されている。表示パネルは、マトリクス状に配置された複数の垂直ライン(走査ライン)と複数の水平ライン(信号ライン)により構成される複数の画素(1920×3×1080)を有する。表示パネルは、画面の最上部に位置して走査開始する垂直ラインから、画面の最下部に位置して走査終了する垂直ラインまで、画面の下方に向かって、垂直ラインを順次選択することにより画面上に映像を形成する。この線順次走査に同期して、水平ラインには、輝度信号に基く駆動パルスが並列的に印加される。線順次走査のフレームレート(リフレッシュレート)は120Hzである。
 立体映像制御装置1は、以下の構成からなる。入力回路101は、入力ソースから立体映像信号を入力して、映像信号及び垂直水平同期信号を出力する。入力ソースは、デジタルテレビ放送、インターネットを介した映像コンテンツ配信システム及びビデオプレイヤである。入力回路101は、デジタルチューナ及び入力インターフェイスを含んでいる。映像信号は、それぞれ(1920×1080)の解像度を有する右眼用映像信号と左眼用映像信号とからなり、フレーム毎に120Hzで交互に切替る。
 映像処理回路103は、映像信号の輝度レベルを調整するとともに、表示装置2の仕様に適合した輝度信号に変換してXドライバ203へ出力する。Xドライバ203は、輝度信号に基いて、輝度レベルに対応した駆動パルスを生成し、表示パネル201をPWM(Pulse Width Modulation)駆動する。
 タイミング制御回路104は、垂直水平同期信号に基いて、水平走査期間(1H)及び垂直走査期間(1V)を制御するタイミング信号をYドライバ202に出力する。同期信号送信回路108は、タイミング制御回路104から出力された垂直同期信号から、赤外線通信により液晶シャッタ眼鏡3の左右シャッタの開閉を制御するための赤外線信号を送信する。また、MPU(制御手段)105は、各ブロックを連携制御する。
 液晶シャッタ眼鏡3は、赤外線信号を受信して、左右映像信号の切替りに同期した左右シャッタの開閉を行う。以下、液晶シャッタの開閉は、ノーマリホワイトモードにより動作するものとするが、ノーマリブラックモードでの動作も可能である。ノーマリブラックモードの場合は、液晶シャッタの立上りと立下りとの関係が逆になる。
 図2は、映像処理回路103の輝度補正に係る部分のブロック図である。補正用LUT217には、各垂直ラインに対する補正値が予め格納されている。垂直ラインカウンタ215は、垂直水平同期信号の垂直同期信号に基いて垂直ラインのカウントを開始させ、水平同期信号でカウントを進めることにより、垂直ラインの位置を特定する。垂直ラインの位置に対応した垂直ラインカウンタ値を補正用LUT(ルックアップテーブル)217へ入力する。補正用LUT217は、垂直ラインカウンタ値に対応した補正値を出力する。乗算器219は、各垂直ラインに対応した補正値を、各垂直ライン上の画素に対応した映像信号に乗算して、輝度信号を出力する。
 補正値は、走査開始する垂直ラインから予め決められた所定数の垂直ラインに対して、その垂直ライン上の画素に対応した映像信号に各垂直ラインの位置に応じて輝度を、それ以外の垂直ライン上の画素に対して、相対的に増加させるように決められている。
 図3(a)は、補正用LUT217に格納されている補正値と垂直ラインカウンタ値との関係を示している。垂直ラインカウンタ値0~280までの補正値を1.43~1.0と設定し、垂直ラインカウンタ値280~1080までは補正値を1.0に設定する。
 図3(b)は、輝度レベル100%(最大輝度)の輝度信号に対する表示パネル201の輝度と垂直ラインカウンタ値との関係を示している。設定された補正値に対応して、垂直ラインカウンタ値280から1080の輝度を300cd/m2とし、垂直ラインカウンタ値1の輝度は429cd/m2となるように設定する。
 図4Aは、Xドライバ203及びYドライバ202から出力される駆動パルスの波形を示している。Yドライバ202は、高さ-10V、幅7.7μsecの走査パルスを垂直ライン(Y1~Y1080)に順次出力する。Xドライバ203は、走査パルスに同期して各水平ライン(X1~X5760)に信号パルスを並列的に印加する。信号パルスの高さは+10Vで、幅は輝度信号に対応して0から7.7μsecまで変化する。輝度レベル100%の場合、Y1に同期した信号パルスは、図8で説明した、シャッタ透過率30%低下分を補償するため、パルス幅を最大の7.7μsec(補正値1.43)にする。Y2~Y279に同期した信号パルスは、シャッタの応答波形に応じて、それぞれの垂直ラインに対して、駆動パルスの幅を7.7~5.4μsec(補正値1.43~1.0)に単調減少で可変させる。Y280~Y1080に同期した信号パルスは、駆動パルスの幅を5.4μsec(補正値1.0)とする。
 補正値は、入力した映像信号の平均輝度レベル(APL)に基いて変更されてもよい。即ち、APLが所定値以下の場合は、所定値より大きい場合に比べて、補正値を大きく設定し(例えば、1.4~2.0)、画面全体の輝度を保持するようにしてもよい。このとき、パルス幅の最大を超える画素の輝度信号は、オーバーフロー処理により、輝度信号の最大値に制限する。
 単調減少で補正値を変化させる垂直ラインのライン数は、シャッタの立上り期間に応じて決められる。補正値変化は、Y1からY280まで直線で変化させているが、シャッタの立上り期間の透過率変化に応じた曲線で変化させてもよい。また、垂直走査期間内に設定される垂直ブランキング期間は、図8で示したように、シャッタの立下り期間に応じて決定される。
 補正値を変化させる垂直ラインのライン数は、走査終了する垂直ラインから、シャッタの立下がり期間に応じて決めることもできる。このとき、液晶シャッタはノーマリブラックモードで動作し、シャッタの立上り期間は垂直ブランキング期間内に収まるように設定される。
 さらに、補正値を変化させる垂直ラインのライン数は、走査開始する垂直ライン及び走査終了する垂直ラインの両方から、それぞれシャッタの立上り期間及び立下がり期間に応じて決めることもできる。このとき、シャッタの立上り期間と立下がり期間の両方が、垂直ブランキング期間内に収まらないように設定される。シャッタの立上り期間及び立下がり期間が、垂直ブランキング期間からはみ出して、映像表示期間に入り込んだ期間に相当するライン数の垂直ライン上の画素に対して輝度が補正される。
 また、補正値を映像信号に演算して輝度信号を生成する処理では、乗算に代えて加算を用いてもよい。
 また、インパルス型の表示装置としては、スピント型の電界放出ディスプレイパネルでもよい。
 図5は、MPU105の制御により実行される駆動処理のフローチャートである。垂直水平同期信号より垂直ラインカウンタ値を算出し、補正用LUT217から各垂直ラインの補正値を読み出す(S501)。垂直ラインに応じた補正値を映像信号へ乗じる(S502)。補正された映像信号をXドライバ205へ出力することにより、信号パルス幅を水平ライン毎に可変させる(S503)。駆動パルスを表示パネルに印加して、右眼用映像と左眼用映像とを時分割で表示する(S504)。
 (実施例2)
 本実施例に係る立体映像視聴システムでは、図1で示したブロック図で、立体映像制御装置1内にフレームメモリが追加される。フレームメモリは、映像処理回路103から出力される輝度信号を1フレーム分蓄積する。
 図6のフローチャートに従って、立体映像視聴システムの動作を説明する。実施例1と同様に、垂直水平同期信号より垂直ラインカウンタ値を算出し、補正用LUT217から補正値を読み出す(S601)。垂直ラインに応じた補正値を、乗算器219で映像信号に乗じる(S602)。
 フレームメモリに、映像処理回路103から出力される輝度信号が1フレーム分書き込まれる(S603)。MPU105は、蓄積された1フレーム分の輝度信号から、垂直ライン毎の最大輝度レベルを検出し、最高輝度レベルに応じて垂直ライン毎に水平走査期間(1H)を決定する。即ち、最高輝度レベルが高いときは1Hを長くし、最高輝度レベルが低いときは1Hを短くして、なおかつ1フレームの垂直走査期間は変えないように、各垂直ラインの1Hを1フレーム毎に調整する(S604)。
 タイミング制御回路104は、MPU105からの指示に基き、輝度データをフレームメモリより読み出して、各垂直ラインの1Hに同期してXドライバ203へ出力する(S606)。さらにタイミング制御回路104は、垂直水平同期信号に基いて、垂直ライン毎の1Hに対応したタイミング信号をYドライバ202へ出力する(S605)。垂直ライン毎に1Hが可変された状態で、駆動パルスが各ドライバから出力され、表示パネルが駆動される(S607)。タイミング制御回路104から同期信号出力回路108に出力される垂直同期信号は、垂直走査期間が一定であるので、実施例1同様に垂直水平同期信号より生成される。
 図4Bは、駆動パルスの波形を示している。実施例1との違いは、垂直ライン毎に1Hが異なるので、走査パルス及び信号パルスの幅が垂直ライン毎に異なる点である(高さは一定で、それぞれ-10V、+10Vである)。Y1及びY280~Y1080に対しては輝度100%の1Hが設定され、他の垂直ライン(Y2~Y279)に対しては、輝度信号に応じた1Hが設定されたとする。設定された1Hに対して最大輝度信号が各水平ラインに入力した場合、Y1に同期した信号パルスは幅を8.9μsec(補正値1.43)、Y280~1080に同期した信号パルスは幅を6.7μsecV(補正値1.0)とする。Y2~Y279に同期した信号パルスは、垂直ラインに応じて幅を8.9~6.7μsec(補正値1.43~1.0)に変化させる。
 実施例1と同様に、単調減少で補正値を変化させる垂直ラインのライン数は、シャッタの立上り期間に応じて決められる。また、補正値変化は、Y1からY280まで直線で変化させているが、シャッタの立上り期間の透過率変化に応じた曲線で変化させてもよい。
 図3(c)は、輝度と垂直ラインカウンタ値216の関係を示している。入力した映像信号に応じて、各垂直ラインの1Hが調整されることにより、1フレームの画像全体の輝度レベルが上昇する。補正値1倍の輝度値が360cd/m2、補正値1.43倍の輝度値が515cd/m2となる。
 (実施例3)
 実施例1では、Xドライバ203が輝度信号に応じて幅を変化させた信号パルスを出力することによって、表示パネル201はPWM駆動されていた。それに対して本実施例では、Xドライバ203が輝度信号に応じて高さを変化させた信号パルスを出力することによって、表示パネル201をPHM(Pulse Height Modulation)駆動するものである。
 Yドライバ202は、高さ-10V、幅7.7μsecの走査パルスを、各垂直ラインに順次印加する。Xドライバ203は、走査パルスに同期して各水平ラインに幅が一定(5.4μsec)で、輝度信号に応じた高さ(0V~10V)の信号パルスを並列的に印加する。
 輝度100%の場合、Y1に同期した信号パルスは高さを10V(補正値1.43)、Y280~1080に同期した信号パルスは高さを8V(補正値1.0)とする。Y2~Y279に同期した信号パルスは、垂直ラインに応じて高さを10V~8V(補正値1.43~1.0)に変化させる(補正値の変化は単調減少)。
 即ち、本発明は、PHM駆動でも適用可能である。
 (他の実施例)
 また、別の実施形態として、PWM駆動とPHM駆動とを組み合わせて表示パネル201を駆動することも可能である。
 また、映像信号に補正値を乗算した輝度信号をXドライバ203に入力させるかわりに、Yドライバ202から出力した走査パルスの高さを補正することも可能である。即ち、走査パルスの高さを、補正値に応じて、垂直ライン毎にレベルシフトさせてもよい。輝度100%の場合、Yドライバ202から出力した走査パルスの高さ(-8V)は、Y1では-10V、Y2~Y279は-10V~-8Vで単調減少させ、Y280~1080は-8Vにそれぞれシフトされる。
 さらに、本発明においては、入力映像信号が立体映像表示(3D)用か非立体映像表示(2D)用かを判別して、映像処理回路103での信号処理を、3D用と2D用とを互いに切換えることもできる。図7は、入力映像信号に応じた映像制御装置1の動作を示すフローチャートである。
 入力映像信号が3D用か2D用かを判定する(S701)。入力ソースがデジタル放送の場合は、予め取得している番組情報を参照して、選択した番組が3D番組か否かを判別することができる。他の入力ソースの場合は、ビデオストリームのヘッダ情報を参照して判別することができる。
 入力映像信号が3D用の場合は、MPU105の指示に基いて、映像処理回路103の信号処理を3D用に設定し、図3(a)で示した垂直ラインに応じた補正値(1.43~1.0)を映像信号に乗じて輝度信号を出力する処理を行う(S703)。
 入力映像信号が2D用の場合は、MPU105の指示に基いて、映像処理回路103の信号処理を2D用に設定し、同一の補正値(1.43)を1フレーム分の映像信号に乗じて輝度信号を出力する処理を行う(S702)。入力映像信号が2D用の場合は、補正値を乗算せずに輝度信号を生成してもよい。
 それぞれの輝度信号に基いて、信号パルスの幅を水平ライン毎に設定する(S704)。3D用、2D用の設定された駆動パルスで表示パネルを駆動する(S705)。
 以上のように、入力映像信号が3D用の場合は、均一な輝度の観測映像を視聴することができ、2D用の場合は、画面全体の輝度が適正化された表示映像を視聴することができる。
 本発明は上記実施の形態に制限されるものではなく、本発明の精神及び範囲から離脱することなく、様々な変更及び変形が可能である。従って、本発明の範囲を公にするために以下の請求項を添付する。

Claims (6)

  1.  インパルス型の表示手段に右眼用映像と左眼用映像とを時分割で交互に表示させ、その切換えに同期して、シャッタ眼鏡の左右のシャッタを交互に開閉させることにより、立体映像を視聴させる立体映像制御装置であって、
     立体映像を表示させるための映像信号を入力する入力手段と、
     前記映像信号から右眼用映像及び左眼用映像を表示させるための輝度信号を生成して前記表示手段に出力する映像処理手段とを有し、
     前記表示手段は、所定の垂直走査期間で、走査開始する走査ラインから走査終了する走査ラインまで、走査ラインを順次選択することにより画面上に映像を形成し、
     前記映像処理手段は、前記走査開始する走査ライン及び前記走査終了する走査ラインの少なくとも何れかから所定数の走査ラインの該走査ライン上の画素の輝度を、各走査ラインの位置に応じて、前記所定数の走査ライン以外の走査ライン上の画素に対して、相対的に増加させるように前記映像信号を補正することを特徴とする立体映像制御装置。
  2.  前記所定数の走査ラインは、前記シャッタの立上り期間及び立下り期間の少なくとも何れかに基いて決められる請求項1記載の立体映像制御装置。
  3.  前記映像処理手段は、前記画面の最上部の前記走査を開始する走査ラインから下方に位置する前記所定数の走査ラインまでの該走査ライン上の画素に対応した映像信号に、前記最上部から下方に向かって単調減少する補正値を乗算することにより前記輝度信号を生成する請求項1又は2記載の立体映像制御装置。
  4.  前記入力手段と前記映像処理手段とを連携制御する制御手段を有し、
     前記制御手段は、前記垂直走査期間を変えずに、前記走査ライン毎に各走査ライン上の画素に対応する最大輝度信号に基いて、少なくとも1フレーム毎に各走査ラインの水平走査期間を決定する請求項1乃至3記載の立体映像制御装置。
  5.  前記垂直走査期間は、垂直ブランキング期間を有し、該垂直ブランキング期間は、前記シャッタの立下り期間に基いて決定される請求項1乃至4記載の立体映像制御装置。
  6.  インパルス型の表示手段に右眼用映像と左眼用映像とを時分割で交互に表示させ、その切換えに同期して、シャッタ眼鏡の左右のシャッタを交互に開閉させることにより、立体映像を視聴させる立体映像制御方法であって、
     立体映像を表示させるための映像信号を入力する入力ステップと、
     前記映像信号から右眼用映像及び左眼用映像を表示させるための輝度信号を生成して前記表示手段に出力する生成ステップとを有し、
     前記表示手段は、所定の垂直走査期間で、走査開始する走査ラインから走査終了する走査ラインまで、走査ラインを順次選択することにより画面上に映像を形成し、
     前記生成ステップでは、前記走査開始する走査ライン及び前記走査終了する走査ラインの少なくとも何れかから所定数の走査ラインの該走査ライン上の画素の輝度を、各走査ラインの位置に応じて、前記所定数の走査ライン以外の走査ライン上の画素に対して、相対的に増加させることを特徴とする立体映像制御方法。
