L'appareil de stockage externe comprend : un module disque dur comprenant un plateau sur lequel les données sont enregistrées, un bras de tête de lecture pour accéder aux données sur le plateau, et un moteur à bobine mobile pour entraîner le bras de tête de lecture ; une unité de commutation qui est mise en marche/arrêtée par un utilisateur ; et un contrôleur de commutation qui détermine s'il faut alimenter le module disque dur selon l'état marche/arrêt de l'unité de commutation.
