Description

ANIMAL FOOD COMPOSITIONS
BY
BRUNO STEFANON
BACKGROUND
The present disclosure is directed to pet food compositions.
Studies have indicated that specialized nutrient intake extend and improves the life, delay onset and slow progression of disease, and enhances the quality of life of animals.
Changing the proportions of macro-nutrients and micro-nutrients in different nutrient and food products is important in obtaining the right balance. The utility of such characteristics and components has been limited or not as useful as possible.
Plants contain an array of primary and secondary metabolites; primary metabolites for instance, amino acids, or sugar fatty acids, are fundamental for the plant and are involved in metabolism, growth, survival and other basal functions; secondary metabolites are synthesized in the plant from a few key intermediates of primary metabolism and include, among the other, non-protein amino acids, phenols, isoprenoids, alkaloids.
Secondary metabolites of plants are well known and studied for applications in traditional herbal medicine and some of them are included in the official pharmacopeia.
Primary and secondary metabolites, or botanicals or compounds, are also used in human and animal nutrition for their biological activity, for example as scavengers of free radicals, adaptogens and restoring physiological conditions, and helping to prevent and to mitigate degenerative and genetic-based diseases and to ameliorate animal wellness.
These biological activities are referred to as functional and nutraceutical. The terms refer to the activity that these compounds have on organism, being able to modulate and positively modify physiological functions and to enhance conditions related to the health.
Functional and nutraceutical activities depend upon the content of bioactive peptides and compounds from the class of terpenes and derivatives, glycosides and saponins, alkaloids, tannins, fatty oils, steroids and sterols, flavonoids and mucilage and pectins.
Secondary metabolites are the active compounds contained in the plants, part of plants or plant extracts, and the biological activity of these natural ingredients depends upon the content, the chemical family and the mixture of secondary metabolites.
Plants, parts of the plants, or extracts contain one or more secondary metabolites, and the mixture of secondary metabolites in each plant, part of a plant or extract is the phytocomplex.
The phytocomplex is the basis of the phytotherapy, and generally is characterized by low toxicity, and irrelevant side effects, especially for the long term treatment of chronic diseases and in the hypersensitive patient.
The phytocomplex has a wide range of activities, and often the same phytocomplex is indicated for the treatment of several diseases or modification of various physiological conditions.
Mixture of single primary or secondary metabolites from the same or different plants may or may not be synergetic.
Mixture of phytocomplexes from the different plants may or may not be synergetic.
Bioactive peptides and primary and secondary metabolites can be included in the food alone, as a phytocomplex or in a combination.
The activity of single compounds can vary when the compounds are in association with other compounds or when they are in the form of a phytocomplex.
The activity of single compounds, their mixtures and the phytocomplex also depends upon the amounts included in the food. The bioactivity, functional or nutraceutical activity of compounds and the phytocomplex depends upon the ratio in which they are administered to the animal.
The activity of single compounds, its association and the phytocomplexes depend upon the food compositions, the time of administration during the day to the animal, the physiology of digestive tracts, and the individual genetic make up.
The present disclosure provides compositions which are advantageous and commercially useful. The pet food is highly palatable for the animal.
SUMMARY
This disclosure relates to pet food for a domestic animal, particularly for a dog, cat, rabbit, hamster, birds, fish, horse and any other companion animal. In particular, the disclosure relates to a complete food and food supplements in a dry form, semi-dry form, powdered, flaked, crumbled pelletted or a wet form integrated with functional and nutraceutical compounds from plant origin. The pet food is designed for different animal species and biological conditions.
The disclosure is directed to formulate foods specifically designed for different animal species and physiological, psychological and disease-related needs.
The food can be in different configurations and shapes, for instance as a meal, biscuit, snack, treat, sprinkles, candy flake, crumble, pellet or other forms. The food may be an entire food or a supplement for another food. The food or some of its components may be the entire food or a supplement for another food. As a supplement it could be for addition to another regular or nutritional or therapeutic food.
A pet food composition comprises at least one component selected from the group consisting of chicken meat, beef meat, lamb meat, venison meat, fish, egg, whey, milk, rice, carrot, pumpkin, peas, cabbage, beet sugar pulp (dehydrated), alfalfa hay (dehydrated), corn, wheat, barley, oat, soybean, soybean meal, sunflower seed, flax seeds, sunflower meal, flax cake, soy hulls, potato, oats and oil, vegetable, fruit, nut and mixtures thereof. The pet food compositions comprise at least one active component contained in botanicals at least selected from the group of:
Figure imgf000005_0001
The names of the botanicals as used in this application are the Latin botanical names; the common names are also given. The activity and the efficacy of the botanicals depend upon the individual genetic make up of an individual.
Further the pet foods of the disclosure can be fed to the companion animals for the long term, intermittently or transiently. As such there can be a base or basic food for the companion animals and then intermittent or transient use of specialty or tissue cleansing foods. The specialty or tissue cleansing foods can be used for a relatively short time to cleanse and improve the health conditions of the animals and thereafter the animals can be managed on a base or basic food. In some cases the base or basic food can be used with lesser amounts of the specialty or tissue cleansing foods for different time periods. There can be different feedings protocols, which can be different foods for different times so that the health conditions of the animal can be modulated appropriately with the different foods. The disclosure is further described in detail. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DISCLOSURE
The pet food compositions or supplements are supplemented with functional and nutraceutical compounds from plant origin that are included to prevent genetic diseases, ameliorate physiological and psychological function, support body functions and enhance biological response of pet animals.
The disclosure also provides that individual response to functional and nutraceutical compounds depend upon the genetic make up of the animal, which differ for the ability to adapt to environment and to interact with nutrients.
The disclosure relates to the activity and the efficacy of functional and nutraceutical compounds of plant origin which depends upon their molecular signature, which is related to individual genetic make up, according to the concept of nutrigenomics.
The level of inclusion of a phytocomplex in a pet food influences its activity, such that it can change from phytotherapeutic to nutraceutical and functional.
The compositions can have different characteristics.
The disclosure also relates to the level of inclusion of single active compounds, phytocomplex, their mixture and the ratio between them.
The specific functional and nutraceutical activity and the regulation of physiological homeostasis of animals depend upon the amounts and the ratios of the compound, phytocomplex and mixture thereof.
The disclosure relies on the administration with food or supplement of the compound, phytocomplex and mixture thereof in the set out ranges.
Other plants, plant extracts, fractions of plant extracts or phytocomplex with functional and nutraceutical properties can be included in a dose and ratio that is determined to provide for specific biological activity to the animal. Pet foods are disclosed as meals, biscuits, snacks, treats, sprinkles, powders, flakes, crumbles, pellets, candies and other forms of foods formulated together with vitamins, macro- and micro- minerals, amino acids and additives. These foods are supplemented with botanicals from plants, part of plants or plant extracts, alone or in combination, having functional and nutraceutical properties. The foods are described for pet animals, for instance dogs.
The plants, parts of plants or plant extracts with specific biological activities are used as a supplement and at the concentrations and in the mixtures indicated such that these plant or parts of plants or plant extracts perform at the best of their activities.
The response of a pet animal is dependent upon its genetic make up, that is the coordinated and integrated relationship among genes which can be differently regulated from botanicals, according to the genotype; these genes act downwards (down- regulated) and upwards (up-regulated) in the regulation of molecular, cellular and biological pathways
In the TABLE 1 , the lowest and highest amount of active compound per kg of live weight of a pet animal is set out, the pet animal being a dog. Amounts lower than the lowest threshold has little effect on the animal and amounts higher than the highest threshold have a possible toxic activity.

The content of phytocomplex in plants and extracts is standardized in comparison to the main active compound reported in the table.
In the TABLE 2, the lowest and highest amount of active compound per kg of live weight of pet animals is set out, the pet animal being a cat, rabbit or birds. Amounts lower than the lowest threshold has little effect on the animal and amounts higher than the highest threshold have a possible toxic activity.
TABLE 2 (CAT)
Figure imgf000008_0001
In an embodiment of the disclosure, the effect of botanicals and the threshold set out in TABLES 1 and 2 can also vary according to the genotype of a pet animal, and the individual variability also should be considered. Individual formulation for an animal can be identified based on the knowledge of the genotype.
The amounts of plants, part of plants or extracts (A, mg) in the pet foods, meals, biscuits, snacks, treats, sprinkles, powders, flakes, crumbles, pellets, candies and other form of foods depend on the percentage of purity (P, %) of active compound (C, mg), according to the following equation:
A = [C/P*100]
Another characteristic on the amount of the active ingredient that may be added to the pet food can depend also upon the effect on palatability of the food. In addition, the use of too high an amount of active ingredient increases the cost of manufacture.
In an embodiment of the disclosure, plants, parts of the plants or plant extracts are included in pet foods, meals, biscuits, snacks, treats, sprinkles, flakes, crumbles, pellets, candies and other form of foods to exploit the functional or nutraceutical biological effect of the phytocomplex, other than that of the active compound set out in Table 1 . The phytocomplex has a wider range of activities.
In an embodiment of the disclosure, the effect of the phytocomplex can also vary according to the genotype of a pet animal, and individual variability should be considered.
Plants, part of plants or extracts are mixed with food ingredients and other additives (vitamins, macro and micro-minerals, amino acids) to obtain foods, meals, biscuits, snacks, treats, flakes, crumbles, powders, pellets, candies and other form of foods.
As an example, a formulation of treats for dog is set out in TABLE 3, considering the purity of active compounds set out in the TABLE 1. In this case, standardized pure extracts are mixed with other food ingredients and additives and the amount of treat for a dog of 10 kg of live weight is 25 grams of dry matter. TABLE 3 (DOG)

The disclosure relates not only to the plant derived compounds, their concentration and combinations in mixture, but also the other ingredients, referred in the TABLE 3 as "MACRO" and "MICRO", to booster the functional and nutraceutical activities of the plant active compounds.
The botanicals and the phytocomplex interact with food ingredients in determining the biological response of an individual pet animal.
The activity of a single compound, its association and the phytocomplex also depends upon the food processing, the time of administration during the day to the animal, the physiology of digestive tracts, and the physiological or psychological conditions.
The "MACRO" ingredients can vary plus or minus 15% of the concentrations indicated. As an example, chicken meat in the sport treat can range from 54.5% to 95% of the set out value of 64%.
The "MICRO" ingredients can vary plus or minus 40% of the concentrations indicated. As an example, Leucine, in the sport treat can range from 4800 ppm to 1 1200 ppm of the set out value of 8000 ppm.
The plant botanicals can vary in the range indicated in TABLES 1 , if not otherwise stated; the content of botanicals can also vary from the genotype of the individual pet animal.
In some embodiments, the term "dry pet food" as used means a pet food which has a water content of less than about 13%, preferably less than about 10%, by weight of the food. In an alternative embodiment, the term "semi-moist pet food" as used means a pet food which has a water content of from about 55% to 75%, preferably from about 62% to about 68%, by weight of the food.
In another alternative embodiment, the term "wet pet food" as used herein means a pet food which has a water content of from about 76% to 86%, preferably from about 80% to about 82%, by weight of the food.
The term "pet" means a domestic dog, cat, rabbit, bird, hamster, rodent, fish, horse and any other companion animal, as well as fish and exotic animals. The term "pet food composition" means a composition that is intended for ingestion by the pet. Pet food compositions may include, without limitation, nutritionally balanced compositions suitable for daily feed, as well as supplements which may or may not be nutritionally balanced.
"Plant extract" as used herein means any substance which is derived, obtained or extracted from a plant or plant part by conventional extraction techniques and that contain a phytocomplex.
In a preferred embodiment, the term "plant extract" as used herein is intended to mean any substance which is derived, obtained or extracted from a plant or plant part by conventional extraction techniques and which contain active compounds as bioactive peptides and of the chemical family of terpenes and derivatives, glycosides and saponins, alkaloids, tannins, fatty oils, steroids and sterols, flavonoids and mucilage and pectins.
The pet food compositions may be prepared by any of a variety of processes. The components may be obtained from plant matter, or otherwise provided, and then subjected to pet food processing, as meal, pellet, powder, flakes, crumbles, cold extrusion, heat extrusion autoclaved tins and pouches.
Pet foods, meal, biscuits, snacks, treats, sprinkles, powder, flake, crumble, pellet, candies and other form of foods should be effectively palatable. These foods should have the effect of restoring physiological or psychological functions, or ameliorate behavioral conditions. The foods should permit the recovery of pet animals from stress conditions and illness, and the amelioration of pathological conditions. The foods should help to prevent infectious and genetic diseases, and the foods should integrate pharmacological and related therapies, and enhance productive, reproductive and athletic performances of pet animals.
The foods should be particularly suitable for consumption by domestic pets, including dogs, cats, rabbits, rodents, hamsters, birds and horses, as well as fish and exotic animals.
The plant, the part of the plant or the plant extract may be added to the pet food composition at any stage of its manufacture. If it is added before a heating or other known degrading processes, the plant, the part of the plant or the plant extract should be included in excess, to compensate for the relative extent of degradation.
The amount of plant, part of the plant or plant extract may be added to the pet food composition to ensure that the concentration of active compound or the phytocomplex are still effective until the expiration date. Typical expiration periods range from 3 to 24 months.
