Definitions
- This invention relates to a toy for an animal and, more particularly, to a floatable toy that is readily visible to an animal when the toy is located in a body of water.
- canine toys are currently available, some of which are chewable, whilst others are suitable for use as retrieval toys.
- Retrieval toys are often thrown into a body of water such as a swimming pool, a lake, or the sea as many canines enjoy playing in water.
- a problem associated with retrieval toys is that, if such a toy is thrown into a body of water, the toy floats on the surface of the water and does not protrude from said surface significantly which makes it difficult to see and retrieve by the canine.
- the inventor therefore believes that a need exists for a retrieval toy that is readily visible as well as being easy to grip by an animal such as a canine when the toy is located in a body of water.
- an animal toy including:-
- an elongated body having a first weighted portion and a second portion extending therefrom; the second portion being manufactured from a material which has a specific gravity less than that of water so as to render the toy buoyant; wherein the ratio of the lengths of the first and second portions is between 1 :2 and 1 :4.
- the first portion may be manufactured from a material having a greater specific gravity than that of water thereby being more weighted relative to the second portion.
- the ratio of the lengths of the first and second portions may preferably be about 1 :3.
- the length of the first and second portions combined may be between 20 and 30 cm, typically about 25 cm.
- the ratio of the length of the first and second portions may be selected so that the second portion stands proud of a body of water in which the toy is located in use. In this manner, a major portion of the toy is visible to an animal wishing to retrieve the toy and can in addition be readily picked up in the animals' jaws.
- the first and second portions may be manufactured separately and assembled to form the toy.
- the toy may include a rope extending from a free end of the second portion.
- the toy may include a centrally located passage for accommodating the rope and an anchor point located in the first portion from which the rope may extend through the passage and out of the free end of the second portion.
- a free end of the rope may be provided with a weight.
- the weight may be manufactured from a synthetic plastics material having a lower specific gravity than water.
- the rope and weight may in use be gripped by an animal retrieving the toy and may also be used by an animal owner as a gripping formation at which to hold the toy when throwing it for the animal.
- a free end region of the first portion may be provided with stabilising formations to permit the toy to be placed on a level surface without falling over.
- the stabilising formations may be in the form of fins.
- the second portion may taper from the first portion towards the free end of the second portion.
- the second portion may be coloured in alternating white and red coloured bands so as to resemble a lighthouse.
- the first and second portions may be manufactured from a synthetic plastics material having a lower specific gravity than water.
- the first portion may be manufactured from rubber
- the second portion may be manufactured from EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate).
- the second portion may be resiliently deformable so that it may easily be gripped by the jaws of an animal.
- the toy may be self-righting when located in a body of water and a substantial part of the second portion may stand proud of a surface of the body of water.
- Figure 1 shows a schematic side view of a toy in accordance with the present invention
- Figure 2 shows a three-dimensional exploded view of the toy
- Figure 3 shows an assembled cross-sectional side view of the toy of Figure 2.
- reference numeral 10 generally indicates an embodiment of an animal toy in accordance with the present invention.
- the animal toy 10 includes an elongate body 12 having a first weighted portion 14 and a second portion 16 extending therefrom.
- the second portion 16 is manufactured from a material which has a specific gravity less than water so as to render the toy 10 buoyant.
- the ratio of the lengths of the first and second portions 14 and 16 is between 1 :2 and 1 :4, preferably about 1 :3.
- the first portion 14 is manufactured from a material having a greater specific gravity than the material from which the second portion 16 is manufactured, thereby being weighted relative to the second portion 16.
- the length of the first and second portions 14 and 16 combined is between 20 and 30 cm, typically about 25 cm.
- the ratio of the length of the first and second portions 14 and 16 is selected so that the second portion 16 stands proud of a body of water in which the toy 10 is located in use.
- the water line is indicated by arrow "A" in Figure 1.
- the toy 10 is typically used as a retrieval toy for a canine but can of course also be used as a toy for other animals.
- the first and second portions 14 and 16 are manufactured separately and are shown separately in Figure 2. They are then assembled to form the toy 10 as shown in Figure 3.
- the toy 10 has a rope 18 extending from a free end 20 of the second portion 16.
- the toy 10 has a centrally located passage 22 for accommodating the rope 18 and an anchor point 24 located in the first portion 14 from which the rope 18 extends through the passage 22 and out of the free end 20 of the second portion 16.
- a free end of the rope 18 is provided with a weight 26.
- the weight 26 is manufactured from a synthetic plastics material having a specific gravity less than that of water, for example, TPR (Thermo-plastic Rubber).
- the rope 18 and weight 26 can in use be gripped by an animal retrieving the toy 10 and can also be used by an animal owner as a gripping formation at which to hold the toy 10 when throwing it for the animal.
- a free end region 28 of the first portion 14 is provided with stabilising formations in the form of fins 30 to permit the toy 10 to be placed on a level surface without falling over.
- the second portion 16 tapers from the first portion 14 towards the free end 20 of the second portion 16.
- the second portion 16 is coloured in alternating white and red coloured bands so as to resemble a lighthouse as shown in Figure 1.
- the second portion 16 is manufactured from a synthetic plastics material having a lower specific gravity than water.
- the first portion 14 is typically manufactured from rubber and the second portion 16 is typically manufactured from EVA.
- the second portion 16 is resiliently deformable so that it can easily be gripped by the jaws of an animal.
- the toy 10 is self-righting when located in a body of water and a substantial part of the second portion 16 stands proud of a surface (see arrow "A" in Figure 1 ) of the body of water.
