  • a circular piezo-actuator 46 is chosen as this is very precise, fast and has a high repeatability.
  • the stroke and lifting/relaxing speed can be controlled electrically.
  • This actuator 46 is also capable of maintaining a lift that is parallel to within microns.
  • This piezo-actuator is a standard product and a proposal could be one with an outer diameter of around 20mm and inner diameter of 12mm. This type and size is very powerful with a blocking force of around 8000N which opens for the use of a very stiff return spring. In this design it is also easy to make an initial adjustment by the shims 48 which is much more stable, firm and reliable than adjusting screws or the like, which of course may substitute for the shims 48.

  • the grating spectrometer 52 configuration of the probe head 2 is very attractive as the only moving part is the diaphragm 24 and window 32 arrangement. It is therefore expected to be very insensitive to vibrations and is also easy to handle during calibration or control where an operator may need to dismount the sensor from the pipe-line.
  • Control electronics for one or both the detector array 56 and the light source 36 may be conveniently housed by the enclosure 8.
  • a drying cartridge 62 such as one filled with the known desiccant, Silica gel, may optionally be provided to maintain inside the enclosure 8 dry.

  • the fibre optic 68 acts as an optical coupling between the probe head 2 and a remote analyser (not shown) such as a Fourier Transform analyser, spectrometer or other analyser suitable for use in the determination of compositional or other (presence or absence of material say) information from the so collected light.

  • the fibre optic 68 is relatively brittle and susceptible to mechanical damage from, for example, vibrations in the operating environment of the probe head 2.
  • a flexible tubing 72 may be advantageously employed in order to afford some mechanical protection to the fibre optic 68. Indeed such protection may be employed usefully with other types of fibre optic.
  • FIG. 4 A second exemplary embodiment of a probe head 74 according to the present invention is illustrated in Fig. 4 and may, as the skilled person will be aware, readily substitute for the probe head 2 in the assemblies described in Figs. 3.

  • a hinge system 94 is provided in mechanical connection to one side of the bellows diaphragm 88, here in the present embodiment in mechanical connection to one side of the slidable mount 80, generally opposing the point at which the actuator 86 is set to apply a force to push the bellows diaphragm 88.
  • the hinge system 94 advantageously provides an increase stiffness to the bellows diaphragm 88 which tends to resist any movement of the window 92 that may be caused by the internal flow of material in the pipe-line, pressure fluctuations etc.
  • the hinge system 94 cooperates with the actuator 86 to provide a small angular movement of the window 92 relative to the other window of the second cavity as the actuator moves the bellows diaphragm 88. This creates a limited non-parallelism between the two windows which may advantageously prevent unwanted reflection artefacts being created between the windows.
  • the hinge system 94 of the present embodiment is shown to comprise a single hinge but a plurality of hinges, for example two narrow hinges radially separated by an angle of between 30 to 60 degrees, may be employed to provide an increased stiffness.
  • Shims 96 may be provided to make a grove angular adjustment to the window 92 and additional shims 98 may be employed to set a base separation between the widows.
  • measurements may be effected in a variable path length optical probe according to the present invention.
  • One or both of the windows may be replaced with a lens or other transparent optical element; a one of the optical elements may be replaced with a reflector, the second cavity removed and both light generation and collection made in the first cavity, perhaps using a suitably configured fibre optic arrangement.
  • the other optical interface of the pair may also be incorporated into its own movable diaphragm, either similar to the ones described in relation to the exemplary embodiments set out herein or perhaps alternatively formed as a flat sheet of flexible material such as a metal sheet.

  • the windows 108a and 1 12a delimiting a light path between a portion of the sample material to be analysed.
  • a spring 1 14a is also provided to substitute, or at least augment, the return bias spring force of the bellows diaphragm 106a tending to contract the bellows diaphragm 106a.
  • the probe head 100b of Fig 5b differs from that of Fig. 5a in that a single stacked piezo-actuator 102b replaces the circular one 102a of Fig. 5a and in that a hinge 1 16b is provided cooperable with the actuator 102b to cause a window 108b located in a bellows diaphragm 106b to undergo a small angular movement as the bellows diaphragm is expanded to reduce the light path between opposing windows 108b, 1 12b.
  • a spring 1 14b is again provided to tend to bias the bellows diaphragm 106b towards a contracted state.
  • the actuator comprises a cam 1 18c directly coupled to the hollow light-pipe 104c so that as the cam 1 18c rotates the light-pipe 104c and hence the window 108c undergoes reciprocal movement to vary the light-path.
  • a cam 1 18d acts indirectly on the light- pipe 104d via a flexible mechanical coupling 120d.
  • the coupling 120d is fixed towards one end at the light-pipe 104d and also towards the opposite end.

  • the probe head according to the present invention may be usefully employed to make optical measurements at two or more different path lengths and the results used to make an analysis in which compensation for drift is made without recourse to the use of a reference sample for so-called "zero setting".
  • the methodology and rational applied here is similar to that described in WO 2006/058741 , the contents of which are incorporated herein by reference, in relation to multiple path length, typically dual path length, measurements made using a hinged cuvette sample holder to achieve the variable path length through the sample to be analysed.
  • the probe head according to the present invention may be made to present a plurality of different path lengths to radiation emitted from the source.
  • a value is calculated which is dependent on the ratio of intensities of radiation having traversed two path lengths of the plurality of different path lengths for a same one of the one or more emitted wavelengths and from which may be generated one or both quantitative and qualitative indications of the sample.
