Definitions
- This invention relates to the field of intrauterine contraceptive implants and more particularly to the field of thread less implants that eliminate direct contact of uterine cavity with copper surface, ensuring safety and infection-free usage.
- triangular/heart-shaped intrauterin device employing three capsules of progestin/magnets and are different from the present invention in terms of form of casing, placement of cqpper pieces and the method for manufacture.
- An object of the present invention is to provide highest surface area for copper to release ions in larger numbers to uterine fluids to ensure highest effectiveness for the intrauterine contraceptive implant.
- a nolher object of the present invention is to provide thread less or string less intrauterine contraceptive implant to eliminate the requirement of physical contact by hand through the loose string or thread of the implant.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide fail-proof
- Another object of the present invention is to prevent coming off of the copper wire end into contact with uterus wall.
- Intrauterine contraceptive implant (100) of the present invention overcomes the shortcomings of prior works, as the copper spring (20), being encased in stainless steel 304 ring (50), does not come in direct contact with uterine walls.
- Drawing # 1 illustrates a heart-shaped intrauterine contraceptive implant (100) with straight side walls
- Drawing # 2 illustrates interlocking of ends of stainless steel ring (45).
- Drawing # 3 illustrates jig plate (40), used in heat-treating stainless steel ring (45).
- Intrauterine contraceptive implant (100) of the present invention is principally made of two elements - (a) outer, heart-shaped ring (50), constructed of medical grade stainless steel 304 wire and (b) encased within said ring (50), three pieces (15) of 99.95% pure copper spring (20), aggregating 300 mm in surface area.
- Uterine fluid fills up the implant (100) and the copper spring (20) cut into three equal sized pieces (3 ⁇ 45 ) floats in uterine fluid, thereby making available entire surface area of copper spring (20) for releasing copper ions into uterine fluid and consequently enhancing effectiveness of the intrauterine contraceptive implant (100).
- Stainless steel 304 is compatible with human body. Elasticity of stainless steel spring-encased contraceptive implant ( 100) is maintained during contraction and expansion of uterine cavity. Contraceptive implant (100), consequently, does not leave its position in uterine cavity.
- An inventive feature of the present invention resides in the elasticity, permeability and peculiar heart-shape of stainless steel 304, helical ring (50), encasing copper spring (20).
- the stainless steel ring (50) is constructed of medical grade, stainless steel 304 wire - of 0.3 mm diameter and 52 mm length- into a spring (45), having 2 mm coil diameter.
- the helical spring (45) has its two ends inter-locked inwardly and spot- welded at the point of contact between the two ends.
- the stainless steel 304 ring (45), after inter-locking of two ends, is heat-treated into a heart-shaped, flexible, stainless steel 304 ring (50) in a jig plate (40), as illustrated in the accompanying drawing # 3.
- the stainless steel 304 spring (45) has its two ends interlocked in a way such that one loose end of the ring (45.) is bent inward to a plane that is parallel to the diameter of stainless 304 coil of the ring (45) and the other loose end of the stainless steel 304 ring (45) is inwardly interlocked with the first end and is spot-welded at point of contact with the first end.
- the interlocking of two ends is illustrated in the accompanying drawing # 2.
- the second inventive feature of the present invention lies in inwardly locking and spot-welding the two ends of the stainless steel 304 helical ring (45) at the point of contact between the ends.
- the locking arrangement ensures injury- free use of the implant (100) and eliminates accidental loosening of two ends of the stainless steel 304 ring (50).
- the jig plate (40) has a plurality of heart-shaped slots (42), which hold a plurality of the stainless steel 304 rings (45) during heat treatment process.
- Hot air at 500 - 700 degree Celcius temperature is circulated in a closed oven through which the jig plates, placed upon a conveyor belt, are passed at speed that allows a residence time of 3 - 8 minutes to the jig plates (40) and more particularly to the stainless steel 304 rings (45). Heated stainless steel 304 rings (45) are tampered, upon exiting from the heat treatment oven, marking end of the heat treatment process.
- the stainless steel 304 ring (50) is now permanently heart-shaped, wherein its width near top end is larger by 26% than its overall length, as illustrated in the accompanying drawing # 1.
- the third inventive feature of the present invention resides in permanently imparting, by heat treatment process, heart-shape to the stainless steel 304 ring (45), locked inwardly at its loose ends and placed for heat treatment process in jig plate and in said heart shape being larger in width near top end than its length in a ratio of 1.26:1.
- the heart-shaped stainless steel 304 ring (50) after heat treatment, has top side at mid-region curved inwardly (56) and oppositely to two side tips (53, 54), which are curved outwardly.
- the ratio of radius of curvature of said top-central curve (56) to radius of curvature of side tip curve (53, 54) is 2 : 1.
- the two sides of the heart-shaped stainless steel 304 ring (50) are straight and end in a curved bottom (57), whose radius of curvature is larger in size in ratio of 1.25: 1 than the top central, inward curve (56).
- the intrauterine contraceptive implant (100) has a second constituent in the form of 99.95% purity copper wire strips ( I S ).
- a copper spring (20) is constructed of copper wire (15), admeasuring 0.3 mm in diameter and 4.5 mm in length. The spring (20) is wound into pleats of copper wire until its surface area admeasures 300 square mm, when it is cut off the wire (15). The spring (20) is longitudinally sheared into three strips (f ⁇ J5 ), each admeasuring 100 square mm in surface area.
- Two strips ) of the copper wire (50) are mechanically inserted into the upper lobes of the steel ring (50) - by means of a jig tool - through the enlarged gap in the curvature of the stainless steel ring (50) and one remaining copper strip .
- " l !? ) of the copper spring (20) is introduced into apex end of the heart-shaped stainless steel 304 ring (50).
- the method employed for manufacture of thread less, steel ring-encased, intrauterine contraceptive implant (100) comprises the following steps:
- the intrauterine contraceptive implant (100) should be inserted with its wider top end first.
