Abstract

1318554 Intrauterine devices MICHAEL REESE HOSPITAL & MEDICAL CENTER 12 June 1970 [16 June 1969] 28616/70 Heading A5R An intrauterine device comprises at least one capsule containing a progestin contained within a partially permeable wall. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the device comprises three silicone elastomer tubes 11, 12, 13 containing progestin. These tubes are joined by polyethylene corner pieces 14, 15, 16 so that the whole aquires a generally triangular shape. In other embodiments (not shown) the device may comprise rings, spirals, bows or double S loops. The triangular device may be elastically distended so that it is easily inserted into the uterus using the forked applicator (21) and a string (22) (Fig. 2). Oncee the device is in place the capsules slowly release the progestin at a rate dependent upon the directions of the capsule walls. The recommended progestin is d1-11#-ethyl-17a-ethinyl-17#-hydroxygon-4-ene -3-one although others are exemplified.
