Abstract

1286412 Inflatable prosthesis DOW CORNING CORP 23 Oct 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 50377/ 70 Heading A5R An inflatable prosthesis, for implantation in or replacing parts of the body particularly for use as a mammary prosthesis, comprises a collapsible closed shell 11 and a filler stem 12 slidably mounted in the shell 11, and has a body of viscous jelly-like material 14 encased in a thin, flexible walled capsule 16 surrounding the filler stem 12 at its point of entry to the shell 11. The capsule 16 is reinforced with fabric material 17, 18 around the entrance and exit points of the stem 12. In use, fluid, e.g. saline solution or silicone gel, is placed in the shell via the stem 12 and the stem withdrawn, either completely, whereby the entrance and exit points are sealed by the substance 14, or partially so that the exit ports 19, 21, 22 of the stem lie within the capsule 16, and are sealed by the substance 14. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the end of the stem 12 is closed and provided with a flange (23) to prevent complete withdrawal. A plurality of patches (13) Fig. 2 (not shown) of polyester fabric may be placed on the outside of the shell to promote tissue in growth.
