Definitions
- the invention relates to a composite material of shingled overlapping covering elements and polymer layers in which said cover elements are embedded with the function of protecting components from water vapor and oxygen.
- the components may generally be electronic components or more specifically photovoltaic modules. Possible flexibility of the components remains due to the flexibility of the invention.
- the water vapor and oxygen-impermeable cover elements may for example consist of thin glass. The dimensions of thin glass are limited by manufacturing reasons. Due to the shingling overlap of the thin glass, large-size encapsulations can be realized, which amount to a multiple of the dimensions of the thin glass.
- the applied polymer layer serves the mechanical stability stabilization and increases the breaking strength of the thin glass, so that the requirements for mechanical stability are met in particular in a hailstorm.
- Photovoltaic modules consist of interconnected solar cells, which are provided with an adhesive layer with a top and bottom cover.
- the top, transparent cover material used is usually glass with thicknesses in the millimeter range. Flexible photovoltaic modules can not be manufactured with it.
- transparent plastic films can also be used.
- Plastic films are lighter than glass, unbreakable and flexible. But they have too high water vapor and oxygen permeability, whereby the lifetime of the photovoltaic modules is shortened.
- barrier layers By applying barrier layers, the permeability to water vapor and oxygen can be reduced.
- Barrier films with water vapor permeabilities in the range of 10-2 g / m2d and oxygen permeabilities in the range of 10-1 cm3 / m2d are commercially available. This long-term stable photovoltaic modules are difficult to realize.
- barrier layers with water vapor permeabilities smaller than 10-5 g / m2d and oxygen permeabilities smaller than 10-5 cm3 / m2d will be developed. Aging-stable flexible photovoltaic modules could thus be possible.
- the object of the present invention is to design a flexible covering material of the type mentioned in the introduction in such a way that both sufficient aging stability and flexible material properties are provided.
- any dimensions of the flexible cover material may be provided by shingling over the cover elements in up to two dimensions.
- the diffusion path for water vapor and oxygen can be prolonged by suitable choice of the overlap area to the extent that the moisture-sensitive elements are protected aging stable.
- the cover elements may for example consist of thin glass.

Abstract
