Definitions
- the invention is generally related to surgical tables, and is particularly related to a surgical table which is low cost, light weight, and compact for shipping purposes such that it can be transported to and used in, for example, developing world countries that would benefit from access to a sturdy surgical table that can be carried by hand, bicycle, or other transport means to a clinic or hospital.
- a surgical table that is configured such that it can easily shipped in a compact cubic or rectangular paralleliped container measuring 1.5-2.5 feet on a side at a weight of less than 100 lbs.
- a transportable surgical table has the following basic components: a table top, a base, and an axle housing which preferably accomplishes Trendelenburg motion.
- the table top is preferable constructed from a plurality of panels in a multi-segment configuration. Joints between each pair of said plurality of panels that selectively lock and hold each pair of panels at a selected angle relative to one another so that the table top can be configured as a chair, a flat surface, or any other configuration desired for a particular type of surgical operation.
- the base permits height adjustment to accommodate the needs of the surgeon and/or the space in which the table will be used.
- the base has a ground engaging support plate, a table top engaging support plate, and an adjustable section for selectively raising and lowering the table top engaging support plate relative to said ground engaging support plate. This is preferably accomplished with a scissors jack, however, pneumatic jacks or other types of mechanical jacks might also be employed.
- the scissors jack provides the advantage of being mechanical, durable for use in more difficult settings, and compactable to a small height for ease in shipping.
- the axle housing secures that table to the base, hi particular, the axle housing fits between the table top engaging support plate of the base and at least one of said plurality of panels of said multi- segment table top.
- the axle housing preferably permits Trendelenburg motion.
- the axle housing includes a pin and multi-holed plate where the pin secures the multiholed plate such that the table top is held firmly at a desired angle relative to the base
- the base is constructed from cross-shaped plates and includes columnar supports in the center and at the end of each branch such that the table top is stabily supported
- said base is collapsible to a collapsed configuration and said multi-segment table top is removed from said axle housing and said joints of said table top are locked in a compact configuration, wherein said base, said axle housing and said multi-table top fit within a shipping container.
- Figure 1 is an isometric view of a transportable surgical table according to the invention showing the multi-segment table top positioned on the base with the panels articulated to form an inclined chair shape;

- the joints 14 allow each pair of adjacent panels 16 to be rotated relative to one another and be locked into and desired angled configuration.

- the joint mechanism can be wide ranging, including pivots with locking pins, lawn chair style gripping members, etc., so long as the panels 16 can be rotated and then secured into a desired orientation.
- the base 18 is joined at the bottom of the table top 12 preferably under at least one of the panels 16.
- the base 18 is preferably both compact and sturdy.
- the base 18 is shown as having cross shaped plates 20 at the top, mid-section, and base.
- the cross-shaped plates 20 can be made of steel or any other rugged material. Some polymeric or resinous materials may provide weight advantages for the transportable surgical table 10.
- the cross-shape provides for sturdiness from both side to side of the surgical table 10, but also in the longitudinal dimension. Yet, the cross-shape is compact and allows for easier packing and shipping than designs which, for example, might employ multiple legs, or other configurations. Stability is improved by having columns 22 at the end of each of the branches of the cross-shaped plates 20. Preferably the columns 22 are lightweight metal or plastic, but have sufficient rigidity to support the table while being used for surgery.
- a scissors jack 24 is positioned between the mid-section and top cross shaped plates 20, and the columns 22' between the mid-section and top plates are preferably telescoping in character. This allows the surgical table 10 to be raised and lowered using the jack 24. While a scissors jack 24 is positioned between the mid-section and top cross shaped plates 20, and the columns 22' between the mid-section and top plates are preferably telescoping in character. This allows the surgical table 10 to be raised and lowered using the jack 24. This allows the surgical table 10 to be raised and lowered using the jack 24. While a scissors
- the scissor jack 24 is preferred due to its Io cost, rugged, and compact design, other types of devices may be used for raising and lowering the table (e.g., pneumatic jacks, columnar car jacks, etc.).
- the scissor jack 24 is removable during shipping to allow the top cross-shaped plate to be collapsed downward toward the mid-section plate via the telescoping columns 22' for compact shipping, hi addition, the scissor jack 24 and the central column 22" positioned between the mid-section and bottom cross-shaped plates 20 provide for additional sturdy support of the surgical table 10.
- Figure 2 shows the transportable surgical table 10 with the multi- segment table top 12 configured in a flat configuration and being articulated approximately 15 degrees relative to the base 18.
- the amount of angular articulation is preferably variable and may be between plus and minus 30-45 degrees depending on the needs of the operation, doctor or patient.
- an axle which connects the top cross-shaped plate 20 with the bottom of the table top 12 preferably permits accomplishing the Trendelenburg motion.
- Figure 3 shows the base 12 with the axle housing 26 secured to the top cross-shaped plate 20.
- the axle housing 26 has a top surface 28 which is selectively joinable to and disconnectable from the bottom of the table top 12 (preferably to one or more of the panels 16-see Figure 1). As noted above, the axle housing 26 is used to tilt the table top 12.
- Figure 3 also shows the telescoping columns 22' in more detail which allow for selectively raising and lowering the table top.
- the top cross shaped plate 20 can be collapsed downward for packing and shipping.
- Figure 4 shows a side view of the axle housing 26 where a plate 29 has multiple holes 29' therein.
- a pin assembly 30 is insertable into the plate 28 to secure the axle housing 26 such that the table top 12 is held at a desired angle (e.g., preferably at any angle between plus or minus forty five degrees.
- the pin assembly 30 and plate 29 should be made from materials which can withstand the stress of the weight of a patient on the table top so that the table top is at all times held in a secure fashion.
- Figures 5a-b show the scissors jack 24 raising and lowering the height of the base 18 by adjusting the distance between the top and mid section cross-shaped plates 20. It will be recognized that the jack 24 might alternatively be placed between the bottom and mid-section plates 20 (in which case the telescoping columns would be re-oriented).
- Figures 6 and 7a-b show the disassembly and packing of the transportable surgical table into a shipping container 32.
- the multi- segmented table top 12 is preferably adjusted to a square shape with the collapsed base 18 positioned in the middle and then the entire assemblage is placed in a cubic or rectangular paralliliped container 32 for shipping.
- the storage container preferably ways less than 100 lbs and measures 2 feet or less on a side. It will be recognized that other packing configurations are possible (e.g., folding the table top 12 in a scissors fashion to a flat state); however, the configuration shown in Figures 7a has the advantage that the mechanical parts are all positioned inside the panels 16 and the transportable surgical table can be easily packaged in a small volume.
