Definitions
- the present invention relates to an apparatus and a method for writing data on a tape medium.
- the present invention relates to an apparatus and method for writing data to a tape medium using a write head.
- a tape medium such as a magnetic tape can record a large amount of data at a relatively low cost.
- the tape medium since the reading and writing speed is slower than that of a hard disk or the like, the tape medium is often used for long-term storage of data stored in the hard disk or the like.
- the recording density of such tape media has been further improved. This makes it possible to record much more data on the tape medium.
- data already recorded on the tape medium may be overwritten with new data (see, for example, Patent Document 1).
- Patent Document 1 with reference to a table for a combination of tape type and recording density, overwriting is possible to realize the set recording density, or overwriting is possible by setting any recording frequency, tape speed, and writing current. When it is determined that overwriting is possible, overwriting is performed by setting a recording frequency, a tape speed, and a writing current.
- Patent Document 1 does not improve the recording density of a tape medium by writing new data with a certain width and overwriting old data written with a wider width. Therefore, when such writing is performed, Patent Document 1 cannot prevent a problem in reading new data due to old data not being completely overwritten by new data.
- An object of the present invention is to prevent occurrence of a defect in reading new data due to old data not being completely overwritten by new data.

- “LTO3” represents an LTO third generation tape drive
- “LTO4” represents an LTO fourth generation tape drive.
- the width of the write head 14a is set to a length that matches the one having the widest track pitch among a plurality of formats supported by the tape drive 10.
- the width of the read head 14b is set to a length that matches the narrowest track pitch among a plurality of formats supported by the tape drive 10.
- the width of the read head 14b is about half the width of the track pitch of the format supported by the tape drive 10, as can be seen from the figure.
- the width of the read head 14b is shortened when the servo band information cannot be obtained when data is read, so that accurate positioning cannot be performed and the position of the read head 14b is slightly shifted. This is because the data is read out of the track pitch range.
- the LTO 3rd generation tape drive writes data using the LTO 3rd generation format
- the width (19.5 ⁇ m) of the write head 14a is wider than the track pitch (14.3 ⁇ m)
- the written data is It will stick out of the track. Therefore, when writing data in the forward direction (from LP3 to LP4 in FIG. 2), the upper end of the track is aligned with the upper end of the write head 14a.
- the reverse direction from LP4 to LP3 in FIG. 2
- the lower end of the track is aligned with the lower end of the write head 14a.
- the track pitch is kept shorter than the write head 14a by overwriting the protruding portion when data is written to the adjacent track.
- FIG. 4 shows such a writing method.
- track # 0 and track # 1 in the figure are tracks in which data is written in the forward direction.
- the track # 0 is written with a track width of 19.5 ⁇ m by the write head 14a of the LTO third generation tape drive.
- the track pitch becomes 14.3 ⁇ m which is the track pitch of the LTO third generation format. Since the same information is recorded on the tape 23 in the width direction, such overwriting does not affect data reading.
- FIG. 5 shows a state when old data remains in this way.
- old data old data already written on the tape 23
- new data hereinafter referred to as “new data”
- old data old data already written on the tape 23

- a track having a track pitch of 19.5 ⁇ m is written by an LTO third generation tape drive. After that, the data is overwritten by a track having a track pitch of 13.8 ⁇ m by an LTO fourth generation tape drive. Then, a part of the track written by the LTO third generation tape drive remains without being overwritten.
- the width of the area left unwritten by overwriting becomes wider than the width of the read head 14b. Therefore, when data is read out, the data may be erroneously read out from the 5.7 ⁇ m wide region that remains without being overwritten when the LTO fourth generation tape drive is overwritten. Then, old data before overwriting is transferred to the host 30 and a DI (Data Integrity) problem occurs.
- DI Data Integrity
- the tape drive 10 performs an operation for avoiding this problem. That is, when overwriting is requested from the host 30, the writing head 14a is offset to the center of the data band (hereinafter referred to as "band center") immediately before overwriting is actually performed. . That is, when overwriting in the forward direction, the data is overwritten with an offset downward in FIG. 2 and overwriting in the reverse direction in FIG. 2 when overwriting in the reverse direction.
- band center the center of the data band

- the command processing unit 41 receives a Read command
- the command input / output unit 43 is instructed to read the data, and the target data is stored in the buffer 12. If so, the data is returned to the host 30 via the command processing unit 41.
- the channel input / output unit 43 outputs the data read from the buffer 12 by the buffer management unit 42 to the channel 13 or outputs the data received from the channel 13 to the buffer management unit 42.
- a channel input / output unit 43 is provided as an example of a writing unit that outputs data to a write head by outputting the data to a write head.
- the offset determination unit 44 stores, in a memory (not shown), information including the position of EOD (End Of Data) regarding the old data and information regarding the writing position of the new data acquired from the head position management unit 45 and the tape travel management unit 46. Hold. Based on this information, when overwriting the old data with the new data, it is determined whether or not it is necessary to perform an operation of offsetting the write head 14a and overwriting the old data (hereinafter referred to as "offset overwriting"). judge. In this embodiment, new data is used as an example of the first data to be written, and old data is used as an example of the second data that is already in the first position where the first data is written. . It is also determined whether one part of the second data is already in the first position, and whether another part of the second data remains in the second position without being overwritten with the first data. As an example of the determination unit, an offset determination unit 44 is provided.
- EOD End Of Data
- the head position management unit 45 outputs a signal for offsetting the positions of the write head 14 a and the read head 14 b with respect to the tape 23 in the width direction of the tape 23 to the head position control system 17. - a track having a track pitch of 19.5 ⁇ m is written by an LTO third generation tape drive.
- it is required to be overwritten by a track having a track pitch of 13.8 ⁇ m with an LTO fourth generation tape drive.
- the write head 14a is offset downward, and the portion shown in black is written with pattern data.
- the portion written by offset overwriting is the portion that was originally written if the LTO third generation tape drive was overwritten, and there is no problem in the writing itself.
- the offset overwrite invalidates the data if the data has already been written at the write position.
- the tape drive 10 does not write the data on the tape 23 even if the data is not written on the tape 23 or the data is not written on the tape 23 so as to cause the problem described in FIG.
- Offset overwriting may be performed immediately before writing.
- a write error may occur. Therefore, it is advantageous to perform the offset overwriting only when necessary, not when it is not necessary, considering the total performance. Therefore, the following description is based on the assumption that offset overwriting is performed only when necessary.
- FIG. 8 is a diagram for explaining a case where offset overwriting is necessary. Again, the old data is shaded.
- the number of laps is four in the forward direction and four in the reverse direction. That is, for forward laps, the number marked with an arrow on the left side indicates the lap number, and for the reverse lap, the number marked with an arrow on the right side indicates the lap number.
- (a) shows the case where the old data ends in the middle of the even wrap, that is, the case where the EOD of the old data exists in the even wrap.
- (B) shows a case where the old data ends in the middle of the odd wrap, that is, a case where the EOD of the old data exists in the odd wrap.
- FIG. 9 is a flowchart showing an operation example of the tape drive 10 at this time.
- the command processing unit 41 receives a request for writing new data, and notifies the offset determination unit 44 to that effect (step 101).
- the offset determination unit 44 determines whether or not old data written in the old generation tape drive exists on the tape 23 (step 102). For example, information of old data may be stored in a CM (Cartridge Memory) and the determination may be made based on this information. As a result, if it is determined that the old data does not exist on the tape 23, the new data is written to the tape 23 as usual (step 115). In other words, when the offset determination unit 44 informs the buffer management unit 42 that normal writing may be performed, the buffer management unit 42 takes out the data set from the buffer 12 and passes it to the channel input / output unit 43 for channel input / output. The unit 43 writes the data set to the tape 23 via the write head 14a.
- CM Cartridge Memory
- the old data information includes the wrap number in which the EOD of the old data is written and the LPOS (physical position in the longitudinal direction of the tape 23). It is assumed that this information is retained. Further, the number of the lap where the current write head 14a is positioned is acquired from the head position management unit 45, and the LPOS at the position where the current write head 14a is positioned is acquired from the tape running management unit 46 to determine the offset. The unit 44 also holds these pieces of information.
- the wrap number in which the EOD of the old data is written is M
- the wrap number to which the new data is written is N
- the LPOS of the EOD of the old data is P
- the LPOS at the write start position of the new data Q it is assumed that the value of LPOS increases toward the right in FIG.
- the offset determination unit 44 determines whether N is smaller than M-2 (step 103). If N is smaller than M-2, new data is written to the tape 23 as usual (step 115). This is a case where the writing is started from the area A in FIGS.
- the offset determination unit 44 determines whether N is larger than M (step 104). Here, if N is larger than M, an error is reported to the host 30 (step 116). That is, when the offset determination unit 44 notifies the command processing unit 41 that writing cannot be performed, the command processing unit 41 reports an error to the host 30. This is a case where writing is started from region B in FIGS. 8 (a) and 8 (b).
- N is any one of M, M-1, and M-2. Therefore, the offset determination unit 44 determines which of these is N (step 105). First, assume that N is M. In this case, the offset determination unit 44 determines whether M is an even number (step 106). As a result, if M is an even number, it is first determined whether P ⁇ Q (step 107). If P ⁇ Q, the process proceeds to offset overwriting. This is a case where writing is started from area C in FIG. If P ⁇ Q, an error is reported to the host 30 (step 116). This is a case where writing is started from the area D in FIG. On the other hand, if M is an odd number, it is first determined whether P ⁇ Q (step 108).
- the offset determination unit 44 proceeds to the offset overwriting process as it is. This is a case where writing is started from the area E in FIGS. 8 (a) and 8 (b).
- the offset determination unit 44 determines whether M is an even number (step 109). As a result, if M is an even number, it is first determined whether P ⁇ Q (step 110). If P ⁇ Q, the process proceeds to offset overwriting. This is a case where writing is started from the region G in FIG. If P ⁇ Q, new data is written to the tape 23 without performing offset overwriting (step 115). This is a case where writing is started from the region F in FIG. On the other hand, if M is an odd number, it is first determined whether P ⁇ Q (step 111). If P ⁇ Q, the process proceeds to offset overwriting. This is a case where writing starts from the region G in FIG. If P ⁇ Q, new data is written to the tape 23 without offset overwriting (step 115). This is a case where writing is started from the region F in FIG.
- the offset determination unit 44 offsets the write head 14a (step 112). Specifically, the head position management unit 45 is instructed to output a signal for offsetting the write head 14 a to the head position control system 17. At this time, if the current lap number is an even number, the head position management unit 45 outputs a signal for offsetting the write head 14a in the downward direction of FIG. A signal for offsetting the head 14a upward in FIG. 8 is output.
- the offset determination unit 44 overwrites the old data with the pattern data for invalidating the old data (step 113).
- the pattern data is extracted from the pattern storage unit 47 and output to the channel input / output unit 43.
- the channel input / output unit 43 outputs the pattern data to the write head 14a, thereby realizing overwriting of the old data with the pattern data.
- the offset determination unit 44 returns the write head 14a to the position where new data is written (step 114).
- the tape running management unit 46 is instructed to output to the motor driver 18 a signal for backhitching the tape 23 until the position of the writing head 14a in the longitudinal direction matches the writing position of the new data.
- the head position management unit 45 is instructed to output to the head position control system 17 a signal for canceling the offset state of the write head 14a.
- new data is written to the tape 23 (step 115).
- the buffer management unit 42 takes out the data set from the buffer 12 and passes it to the channel input / output unit 43 for channel input / output.
- the unit 43 writes the data set to the tape 23 via the write head 14a.
- offset overwriting is performed with pattern data predetermined as data for invalidating the old data, but this is not necessarily limited thereto.
- offset overwriting may be performed by data generated using a part of the new data, such as data generated by repeatedly arranging the top data set of the new data.
- invalidation data such as pattern data or data generated using a part of the new data is used. Yes.
- the distance traveled by the write head 14a from the position where new data is written to the EOD of old data is one track on the tape medium and the reverse direction.
- the writing head 14a is shorter than the distance traveled along one track, it is determined that a part of the old data remains without being overwritten by the new data.
- the method for determining that part of the old data remains without being overwritten by the new data is not necessarily limited to this. For example, data written over the adjacent wrap from the wraps # 0 and # 1 in FIG. 8A and the wraps # 0 to # 2 in FIG. The data that should have been written may not actually be overwritten.
- the write head 14a when there is a part of old data that is not overwritten with new data, the write head 14a is offset before the new data is written, and the old data is overwritten with invalidation data. did.
- the read head 14b is positioned at the part of the old data that is not overwritten with the new data at the time of reading, this can be recognized by trying to read for a while.
- it is possible to take measures such as returning to the start position of the new data, correcting the position of the read head 14b, and reading the data again.
- the present invention may be realized entirely by hardware or entirely by software. It can also be realized by both hardware and software.

Abstract
