Abstract

The invention relates to a method for operating a device for determining a route profile (r) for a means of transportation, in particular a navigation device for a motor vehicle. Said device comprises a processor, position signal capturing means, in particular for GPS-signals, a position determination unit for determining a position from the captured position signals, control means for displaying the determined route profile and for communicating with the user of the device, means for accessing a road system database that also comprises information that is relevant to the route. Said method comprises the following steps: a) the present position (pv) and the present speed (v0) of the means of transportation is automatically determined; b) at least one route characteristic (R) that is relevant to at least one route section (r) of the route profile, in particular by accessing the road system database, is automatically determined, and the distance (d) from the beginning (pw) of said route section starting from the present position (pv) of the means of transportation is automatically determined; c) at least one first parameter (BA), taking into account the determined distance (d), the present speed (v0) and the route characteristic (R), is automatically determined; d) an automatic selection takes place between at least two operational states, according to the parameter (BA), and communication with the user is controlled by means of the operational states.
