Definitions
- This invention relates to medical devices, and more specifically to endosseous implants.
- osseointegration namely the creation of new, healthy bone tissue over most of the implant surface, with no fibrous tissue between them. It has been proposed that the biological process leading to and maintaining osseointegration is dependent upon a number of factors which include, amongst others, the surface area of the implant available for interaction. This is mainly dependant upon the geometry of the implant; its length and diameter, and the thread pitch and width.
- the present invention provides an endosseous implant.
- the implant of the invention comprises a hollow, open-ended cylindrical or conical component which is provided with screw threads on an interior surface of the cylindrical or conical component as well as screw threads on an exterior surface of the cylindrical or conical component.
- the presence of the interior and exterior threads presents an increased surface area available for osseointegration in comparison to implants having only external threads.
- the increased surface area tends to increase the short term fixation force by doubling the number of screw threads for a given screw length and diameter.
- the device of the present invention can be used as a dental implant, bone anchor, bone screw or any other bone fixation device.
- the invention provides a device for endosseous implantation comprising an anchoring portion, the anchoring portion comprising a hollow cylinder or cone having an exterior surface and an interior surface, wherein the interior surface is provided with interior screw threads and the exterior surface is provided with exterior screw threads.
- the invention also provides a method for deploying a device for endosseous implantation, the device comprising an anchoring portion, the anchoring portion comprising a hollow cylinder or cone having an exterior surface and an interior surface, wherein the interior surface is provided with interior screw threads and the exterior surface is provided with exterior screw threads, the method comprising forming a cylindrical cavity in a bone tissue and screwing the anchoring portion of the device into the cavity.
- Figs. Ia, Ib, and Ic show an endosseous implant in accordance with one embodiment of the invention
- Fig. 2 shows the implant of Fig. 1 after insertion into bone tissue; and Fig. 3a, 3b, and 3c show an endosseous implant in accordance with another embodiment of the invention.
- Fig. 1 shows an endosseous implant 2 in accordance with one embodiment of the invention.
- the implant 2 is shown in perspective view in Figs. Ia and b, and in longitudinal sectional view in Fig. Ic.
- the implant 2 comprises an anchoring portion 4 and a head portion 3 that in use emerges from the osseous tissue into which the anchoring portion 2 has been inserted.
- the head portion 3 is adapted to receive a dental prosthesis, as is known in the art.
- the anchoring portion 4 has a hollow cylindrical component enclosing a lumen 6.
- the anchoring portion 4 has an exterior surface 8 that is provided with exterior threads 9.
- the anchoring portion also has an interior surface 7 surrounding the lumen 6 that is provided with interior threads 11.
- the interior and exterior threads have the same thread lead in order to allow screwing of the device into bone tissue.
- the interior and exterior threads may have a different pitch resulting from a different number of thread starts (single, double, triple or quadruple threads), equally spaced around the periphery.
- the implant 2 is deployed by screwing the anchoring portion 4 into bone tissue, such as an upper or lower jaw, a femur, a tibia or any other bone in the body.
- Fig. 2 shows the implant 2 after implantation in bone tissue 10.
- a cylindrical cavity 12 was pre-drilled in the bone tissue 10 using a hollow cylindrical drill bit.
- the anchoring portion 2 is preferably self-tapping and may thus be screwed into the cavity 12.
- the tissue 10 surrounds anchoring portion 4 and also occupies the lumen 6. In this way, both the interior threads and the exterior threads 9 are engaged by the bone tissue 10.
- the implant 2 may be made from a biocompatible or osseointegrative material such as Stainless steel, Cobalt Chromium alloys, titanium, tantalum or niobium
- the anchoring portion 2 may be coated with a. biocompatible osseointegrative ceramic material such as Zirconia or Titania.
- the implant 2 is made from a bioabsorbable or biodegradeable material such as hydroxiapetite, polyglycolyc acid, polylactic acid, magnesium alloy or a combination of such materials.
- Fig. 3 shows an endosseous implant 22 in accordance with another embodiment of the invention.
- the implant 22 is shown in perspective view in Figs. 3a and b, and in longitudinal sectional view in Fig. 3c.
- the implant 22 comprises an anchoring portion 24 and a head portion 23 that in use emerges from the osseous tissue into which the anchoring portion 24 has been inserted.
- the head portion 23 is adapted to receive a dental prosthesis, as is known in the art.
- the anchoring portion 24 has a hollow conical component enclosing a lumen 26.
- the anchoring portion 24 has an exterior surface 28 that is provided with exterior threads 29.
- the anchoring portion also has an interior surface 27 surrounding the lumen 26 that is provided with interior threads 21.
- the interior and exterior threads have the same thread lead in order to allow screwing of the device into bone tissue.
- the interior and exterior threads may have a different pitch resulting from a different number of thread starts (single, double, triple or quadruple threads), equally spaced around the periphery.
- the implant 22 is deployed by screwing the anchoring portion 24 into bone tissue, such as an upper or lower jaw, a femur, a tibia or any other bone in the body.
- bone tissue such as an upper or lower jaw, a femur, a tibia or any other bone in the body.
- an appropriately shaped cavity can be pre-drilled in the bone tissue using a hollow drill bit.
- the anchoring portion 22 is preferably self-tapping and may thus be screwed into the cavity.
- the tissue will thus surround the anchoring portion 22 and also occupy the lumen 26. In this way, both the interior threads and the exterior threads 29 are engaged by the bone tissue.
