Definitions
- the present invention relates to a light indication system for airport runways, road routes and the like.
- such systems use individual lighting units inserted in the paving and aligned in such a way as to indicate said routes and, more particularly, airport runways used for take off and landing.
- LEDs Light Emitting Diodes
- LEDs are electronic components which operate with direct current. Consequently, the individual lighting units, each consisting of one or more LEDs, arranged in series along a line powered by an alternating current source with high amperage (for example 6.6 Amps), are connected to respective direct current converters with low amperage (for example 1.4 Amps) comprising respective power transformers.
- the aim of the present invention is therefore to overcome the above- mentioned disadvantages by providing a light indication system for airport runways, road routes and the like which is at the same time practical and inexpensive to make, simple to maintain and practical to use.
- the technical features of the invention according to the aforementioned aim may be easily inferred from the content of the appended claims, especially claim 1, and preferably any of the claims that depend, either directly or indirectly, on claim 1.
- Figure 1 is a schematic perspective top view of a stretch of an airport landing runway equipped with a light indication system in accordance with the present invention
- Figure Ia is a diagram of the electrical connections of the light indication system of Figure 1;
- Figure 2 is a block diagram of a system made in accordance with the present invention;
- Figure 3 is an enlarged view of a detail of the system diagram of Figure 2;
- Figure 4 is a schematic side elevation view with some parts in cross-section, of a construction detail of a lighting unit which is part of the circuit of Figure 2.
- the numeral 1 denotes an airport runway, whose edges, labelled A and B from left to right when viewing Figure ⁇ , are defined by respective series 2 and 3 of light indication units 4, which are part of a system 5.
- Said units 4, consisting of light emitting diode (LED) lamps 6, are housed in a transparent box-shaped element 7, fixed to the surface of the runway 1 by brackets 8 ( Figure 4) or embedded in it so that the upper face lies flush with the runway 1.
- LED light emitting diode
- the numeral 10 denotes an alternating current source (for example 6.6 Amps)
- the block 11 represents a circuit element consisting of an AC/DC converter (alternating current to direct current), comprising a constant current regulator (CCR) of the known type and indicated with a dashed line as a block 11a.
- AC/DC converter alternating current to direct current
- CCR constant current regulator
- the constant current regulator 11a can power with a constant current (for example 1.4 Amps) two power lines 12, 13 for the respective series 2, 3 of light indication units 4 which are arranged in series.
- a constant current for example 1.4 Amps
- each line 12, 13, consisting of a respective single-core cable there alternate lamps 6 belonging to edge A and to edge B, so that if the power is interrupted on one of the two lines, then the line which is still functioning can still indicate both edges A and B of the runway 1.
- the lamp connections are made by alternately connecting the lamps 6 belonging to the line 12 and those belonging to the line 13.
- the individual lighting units 4 are arranged on lines 12, 13 powered directly by direct current, therefore eliminating both the transformers connected to each unit 4 and the need to power units through circuits in series with relatively high amperage of around 6.6 Amps, with the need to convert the alternating current into direct current at low amperage. Thus, performance is improved, since there are no longer leaks on the transformers, and obviously the costs are improved.
- the constant current regulator (CCR) 11a can maintain the current value at a constant value even if there are changes in the line load as a result of at least one individual lighting unit 4 developing a fault. It should also be noticed that the relatively low value, for example 1.4 Amps, of the current used to power the light sources 4 of the system disclosed, allows elimination of the delicate and complex electronics of conventional circuits which were powered with a relatively high output current of around 6.6 Amps.
- the low value of the current used to power the lines 12, 13 of the system 5 disclosed allows operation with rated voltages of less than 600 Volts instead of with the relatively high voltages, from 3 to 5 KVolts, present in conventional circuits. Said feature helps to significantly increase the safety of maintenance operators.
- Another advantage is the fact that regulation of the intensity of the power supply current is more precise and effective than the systems in use, because the power supply current is regulated directly.
