- BELT PIECE FOR THE TRANSPORT OF ARTICLES AND/OR FOR POWER TRANSMISSIONS AND METHOD FOR OBTAINING A CLOSED LOOPED BELT EMPLOYING SAID BELT PIECE AS STARTING ELEMENT
- the present invention relates to the technical field of the belt pieces of the type which can be closed as a loop by restraining its ends, and which can be employed for the transport of articles and/or for power transmissions; said belt pieces can comprise a toothing on a side or can be smooth on both sides; they can be partially realized in thermoplastic material and/or they can comprise stiffening longitudinally extending cores, which are buried in their interior.
- a known method for realizing serrated closed looped belts provides the steps of: die cutting a piece obtained from a continuous serrated belt, according to cutting lines such that its ends are respectively provided with complementary coupling profiles, which have for example a comb or V shape; approaching the die cut ends to the extension of the belt according to a longitudinal direction until they contact each other so as to provide restraining (see figures 1 , 2); and finally heat sealing the die cut ends.
- the above-mentioned serrated closed looped belts are disadvantageous because they hardly resist to longitudinal traction efforts, particularly occurring in the junction area of the ends, where the belt is weak because of the above-described steps of cutting and heat sealing. Such disadvantage persists also when using belts provided with stiffening cables, which are buried therein; these latter are in fact cut when cutting the continuous serrated belt, and as a consequence they have a gap section at the junction area.
- the junction area represents a point of the same where breaking is possible.
- an object of the present invention is to provide a belt piece, which can be used for the transport of articles and/or for power transmissions, of the type which can be closed as a loop by coupling its ends, the piece being newly conceived and allowing to obtain closed looped belts, which can better resist particularly to traction longitudinal efforts at the junction area of the ends.
- Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a belt piece, whose production costs are relatively reduced with respect to the objects intended to pursue.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a method for obtaining a closed looped belt employing the newly conceived belt piece of the above- described type as starting element; which belt can be employed for the transport of articles and/or for power transmissions and can better resist to longitudinal traction efforts at the junction area of the ends.
- Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a method for obtaining a closed looped belt, whose implementation is relatively cheap with respect to the objects intended to pursue.
- the present invention is aimed at presenting a belt piece of the type which can be closed as a loop and which can be employed for the transport of articles and/or for power transmissions, comprising two ends, a first and a second one, which can be connected with respect to each other, characterized in that said first and second ends extend transversely or in parallel to a transverse section of said belt piece; and have complementary coupling profiles respectively comprising at least a first and a second portion, which are mutually positioned in order to contact each other when the above-mentioned ends are coupled together, and to press the one against the other in case a longitudinal traction effort is applied to said closed looped belt piece preventing the same ends from sliding in longitudinal direction.
- Specific embodiments of said belt piece are defined in the claims 2 to 4.
- a method for obtaining a closed looped belt which can be employed for the transport of articles and/or for power transmissions, of the type employing a belt piece of the above-described type and specifically protected in the claims 1 to 4, characterized in that it comprises the steps of: approaching said ends of said belt piece at different heights such that according to a plan view of said ends, the above-mentioned complementary profiles match with respect to each other; approaching the above-mentioned ends of said belt piece in a direction orthogonal to the surface of extension of the same ends until these latter are coupled so as to obtain a closed looped belt; and fixing the above-mentioned ends with respect to each other in order to stabilize their coupling.
- the next claims 6 to 9 describe specific embodiments of methods for fixing the ends with respect to each other.
- FIGS. 1 , 2 are plan schematic views of the ends of a belt piece of known type, its ends having respectively V-shaped and comb-shaped profiles and being destined to be restrained with respect to each other according to an approaching direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the same belt piece;
- figure 3 is a perspective view of a serrated belt piece according to a first embodiment of the invention, whose ends, which can be restrained with respect to each other, are disposed one upon the other;
- figure 4 shows again the serrated belt piece of figure 3, its ends being restrained with respect to each other so as to obtain a serrated closed looped belt;
- figure 4A is a sectioned and enlarged plan view of the serrated closed looped belt of figure 4, particularly showing the junction area of the respective ends;
- figure 4B is a sectioned plan view of a serrated closed looped belt similar to the one of figure 4A, obtained employing a serrated belt piece (not shown) as starting element, its respective ends forming together dovetail- shaped profiles, according to a variant of said serrated belt piece;
- figure 5 shows the serrated closed looped belt shown in figure 4, after fixing the ends (shown in broken lines) by means of thermoplastic melting;
- figure 6 shows the serrated closed looped belt piece of figure 4, having a plurality of through holes at the coupled ends, and shows also the elements of a ends fixing system in exploded view;
- figure 6A shows an enlarged detail of figure 6;
- figure 7 is the same perspective view of the serrated closed looped belt piece of figure 6, showing the fixing system applied to the ends;
- figures 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 are similar to figures 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 respectively, wherein a serrated belt piece is shown according to another variant of the invention.
- Figure 3 shows a first embodiment of a serrated belt piece 1 according to the present invention, comprising a central body 80 and a first 2 and a second end 3, which extend transversely with respect to a transverse section of said belt piece 1 ; and have coupling complementary profiles 4, 5.
- the ends 2, 3 of the belt piece 1 shown in figure 3 are configured so that their restraining can be realized only according to a direction orthogonal to their extension surface S; such ends 2, 3 are approached but they are disposed at different heights so that their respective complementary profiles 4, 5, if viewed in plan view (not shown), mutually match; their removable restraining being for example realized by lowering the second end 3 to the first end 2, see figure 4.
- This restraining results stable in longitudinal and transverse direction with respect to the extension direction of the serrated looped belt 10, thus obtained.
- the restrained ends 2, 3 of the serrated closed looped belt 10 can be mutually fixed by means of local melting of corresponding thermoplastic material; figure 5 shows therefore the serrated closed looped belt 10 of figure 4 after fixing by melting the ends 2, 3 (shown in broken lines in figure 5).
- the complementary profiles 4, 5 comprise a plurality of first 6 and second portions 7, which mutually contact with respect to each other when the ends 2, 3 are restrained with respect to each other and which press the one against the other in case a longitudinal traction effort is applied to the closed looped belt piece 1 (alias looped belt 10).
- the interaction stabilizing between each couple of first 6 and second portion 7 individually contributes to provide a total resistant force opposing and compensating the longitudinal traction effort, so as to prevent the respective ends 2, 3 from sliding in longitudinal direction.
- Each couple thus defined can oppose a maximum resistant force value which depends on the configuration (form and dimensions) of the contact surfaces of the corresponding first 6 and second 7 portion; these contact surfaces extend according to the extension components which are transverse to the longitudinal axis of the looped belt 10.
- the maximum value of total resistant force possible, opposed by restraining the ends 2, 3 to a traction effort in longitudinal direction depends on the total interaction of the plurality of the first 6 and second portion 7.
- the looped belt 10 obtained by restraining the two ends 2, 3 of the belt piece 1 opposes a resistance to longitudinal traction/compression efforts, to transverse stresses or to a combination of the first and second ones, namely to stresses contemporarily having a longitudinal and a transverse component.
- figure 4B it is shown a portion of that part of the serrated closed looped belt 10 obtained by restraining the ends 2, 3 of a belt piece according to an alternative embodiment; in this case the restraining is dovetail-shaped.
- the above-described concepts are valid also for such a variant, so that the same reference numbers are used.
- the ends 2, 3 extend in transverse and regular direction with respect to the transverse section of the serrated belt piece 1 ; in such figures the coupled ends 2, 3 have identical configuration having the shape of puzzle pieces (except for figure 4B, in which such configurations are dovetail-shaped), which are offset in longitudinal direction with respect to the development of the serrated belt piece.
- Figures 4A, 4B show in broken line a segment lapping the outermost contact points of the complementary profiles 4, 5 in order to approximately express the inclination degree of the complementary profiles 4, 5 of the ends 2, 3; the angle ⁇ between such a segment and a transverse section of the serrated belt piece 1 roughly defining the inclination degree of the ends 2, 3.
- Figures 8, 9, 10, 11 , 12 corresponding to the above-described figures 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 show a variant of the serrated belt piece 1 , whose associated angle ⁇ is O.
- the embodiments of the serrated belt piece 1 whose respective ends 2, 3 have a great inclination degree (angle ⁇ greater than 30 degrees) with respect to a transverse section of the same serrated belt piece 1 , have another advantage, which will be described in the following.
- the junction area 40 (or coupling region) of the ends 2, 3 (for example with inclination angles ⁇ , as described, greater than 30 degrees) extends in transverse direction, namely it is distributed in the longitudinal direction of the looped belt 10; as a consequence the length of the part of the looped belt 10 comprising the junction area 40 increases and the average resistance to traction of each transverse portion of this part which winds around the pulleys increases as well. On the whole, it can be considered that the total resistance to traction of the looped belt 10 advantageously increases; such increase being correlated to the angle ⁇ value.
- thermoplastic material (figures 5 and 10).
- threaded organs 21 in the shown example five cylindrical headed screws each having an hexagonal recessed seat 21 engaging each small block 23-false tooth 18 unit, in order to removably fixing the mutually restrained ends 2, 3 (figure 7).
- a false tooth 18 is an element destined to have the same function as a tooth 14 of the looped belt 10, when this latter winds around gearwheels.
- the resistance to traction efforts of the looped belt 10 is instead mainly applied by restraining the ends 2, 3, as above precised, by means of the interaction between the contact surfaces of the first 6 and second portions 7 of complementary profiles 4, 5.
- the assembly of small block 23-faIse tooth 18 units can be advantageously employed also for the transport of articles and can extend along the development of the looped belt 10 (example not shown).
- An advantage of the present invention lies in having defined a belt piece which can be used for the transport of articles and/or for power transmissions, of the type which can be closed as a loop by restraining its respective ends, which is new and allows to obtain closed looped belts having better characteristics of resistance to longitudinal traction efforts with respect to the known ones. Moreover, the production costs of the belt piece thus obtained are relatively reduced with respect to the achieved advantages.
- Another advantage of the present invention lies in having defined a method for obtaining a closed looped belt employing the new belt piece of the above-described type as a starting element, which belt can be employed for the transport of articles and/or for power transmissions and which has better characteristics of resistance to longitudinal traction efforts with respect to belts of known type in the field of interest.
- the implementation of the present method implies relatively reduced costs with respect to the achieved advantages. Therefore, the above-described advantages show how the belt piece and the method for obtaining a closed looped belt employing the same belt piece as a starting element, both being objects of the present invention, satisfy the objects fixed in advance and brilliantly solve the disadvantages peculiar to the solutions of known type.
- Another advantage of the present invention lies in having defined a belt piece, which depending on the traction/compression efforts, the corresponding looped belt is subjected to, allows to design the configuration and the development of its respective coupling ends 2, 3 according to the application needs.
