Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a cutting insert, more particularly, to a cutting insert having planar clamping surfaces for grinding side portion.
  • a cutting insert is mounted on a mounting face of a holder of a cutter through a clamping means.
  • FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a conventional cutter 2 and shows that a number of inserts 1 are mounted to the cutter.
  • FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the insert shown in FIG. 1 and FIG. 3, FIG. 4 and
  • FIG. 5 are front view, side view and plane view of the insert shown in FIG. 1, a portion of work-piece machined by the insert is shown along with the insert.
  • a main cutting edge IA makes a positive lateral rake angle in a clockwise direction with an imaginary line which is parallel to an axial line of a clamping hole 1-2.
  • a chip is discharged in a direction away from the work-piece and a corner edge, and a cutting resistance and vibration is reduced so that a cutting performance is enhanced.
  • the upper face 13 and the lower face 14 are provided with chip forming grooves 15 adjacent to and formed along the cutting edges so that the cutting edges have a positive cutting angle ( ⁇ ),
  • FIG. 6 is a perspective view of the insert prior to grinding an upper face and illustrates a semi-finished insert.
  • a fastening hole 1-2 is formed on a central portion, chip forming grooves 1-5 are formed along both edge portions at which an upper face l-3a and a lower face l-4a are met with side faces 1-6.
  • An outer edge of each chip forming groove 1-5 acts as the main cutting edge.
  • the side faces 1-6 adjacent to the chip forming grooves 1-5 should be ground.
  • the semi-finished insert Ia is secured by clamps pressurizing the upper face l-3a and the lower face l-4a, and both side faces 1-6 are then ground by a grinding device.
  • the upper face l-3a and the lower face l-4a gripped by grippers of the clamps should be formed in planar surfaces which are parallel with each other.
  • the upper face l-3a and the lower face l-4a are ground by means of a separate grinding device to form the upper and lower faces into the inclined faces having the inclining angle which is the same as that of the chip forming groove 1-5. Accordingly, an inner edge of the chip groove 1-5 and the inclined upper face 1-3 (the lower face 1-4) are substantially disposed on the same face.
  • the present invention is conceived to solve the aforementioned problems which can be generated in a process for manufacturing the insert, an object of the present invention is to provide a cutting insert which can be produced by grinding only side faces after a press process.
  • a cutting insert according to the present comprises a substantially rectangular paral- lelepipedal base body formed with a front face, a rear face, an upper face, a lower face, and two flank faces, the front face and the rear face pierced by a central fastening hole extending in a longitudinal direction.
  • cutting edges are formed at the boundary between the upper face and the lower face, and the two flank faces; the cutting edges are slanted from the front face toward the rear face to provide a positive lateral rake angle ( ⁇ ); the upper face and the lower face are provided with chip forming grooves adjacent and along the cutting edges so that the cutting edges have a positive cutting angle ( ⁇ ), the upper face and the lower face are provided with two clamping surfaces each formed over at least strip areas covering the longitudinal median line spanning the front face and the rear face, and the two clamping surfaces are flat and parallel, and facing away each other; and transitional portions are provided between the chip forming grooves and the clamping surfaces so that chips generated in the chip forming grooves are slid and evacuated smoothly thereover.
  • the transitional portions are wider than the chip forming grooves, the transitional portions are flat surface or curved surface joining the chip forming grooves and the clamping surfaces.
  • transitional portions comprise inclined surfaces which extend inwards from the inner boundary of the chip forming grooves so that the inclined surfaces have the same lateral rake angle ( ⁇ ) as the cutting edges.
  • the present invention as described above can provide the insert having a positive edge and produced by machining only both side faces without additionally machining upper and lower faces, and so the time for manufacturing the insert is reduced, whereby the productivity of the insert can be improved.
  • FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a conventional cutter to which inserts are mounted.
  • FIG. 2 is a perspective view of the insert shown in FIG. 1.
  • FIG. 3, FIG.4 and FIG. 5 are front view, side view and plane view of the insert shown in FIG. 1.
  • FIG. 6 is a perspective view of the insert prior to grinding an upper face.
  • FIG. 7 is a perspective view of the insert according to the present invention.
  • FIG. 7 is a perspective view of the cutting insert according to the present invention
  • the insert 10 according to the present invention has a substantially rectangular paral- lelepipedal base body formed with a front face 11, a rear face 12, an upper face 13, a lower face 14 and two side (flank) faces 16.
  • the front face 11 and the rear face are pierced by a central fastening hole 10-1 extending in a longitudinal direction.
  • a cutting edge is formed at each boundary between the upper face 13 (and the lower face 14) and the flank face 16, and the cutting edge is slanted from the front face 11 toward the rear face 12 to provide a positive lateral rake angle ⁇ .
  • the upper face 13 and the lower face 14 are provided with chip forming grooves 15 adjacent to and formed along the cutting edges so that the cutting edges have a positive cutting angle
  • the upper face 13 and the lower face 14 are provided with two clamping faces 13-1, each of which is formed over at least strip areas covering the longitudinal median line spanning the front face 13 and the rear face 14, and the two clamping faces 13-1 are flat and parallel, and facing away each other.
  • Each of inclined portions 13-1 (transitional portions) is provided between the chip forming groove 15 and the clamping face 13-1 so that chips generated in the chip forming groove 15 are slid and evacuated smoothly thereover.
  • each of the transitional portions 13-2 can comprise an inclined face which extends inwards from the inner boundary of the chip forming groove 15, and so the inclined face has the same lateral rake angle ⁇ as the cutting edges.
  • a structure of the lower face 14 is the same as that of the upper face 13 as described above. As an example, however, only the upper face 13 is described below.
  • the clamping face 13-1 formed at a central portion is a horizontal face which is parallel with a corresponding clamping face (not shown) of the lower face 14, a gripper (not shown) of a clamp as a securing means is corresponded and contacted with the clamping face 13-1 when the side faces 16 are machined (ground).
  • Each of the inclined faces 13-2 formed at both sides of the clamping face 13-1 is inclined at certain angle ⁇ which is the same as an inclined angel of the chip forming groove 15.
  • each inclined face 13-2 and an inner edge of the adjacent chip groove 15 are substantially disposed on the same face.
  • the chip formed during a cutting process is moved to a rear face 12 along the chip forming groove 15 and can be moved along the inclined face 13-2 without hindrance so that the chip is moved toward a side opposite to the main cutting edge (that is, a side opposite to the work-piece).
  • the grippers of the clamps of the grinding device can grip stably the clamping face 13-1 constituting the upper face 13 (and the lower face 14), and so a clamping force is applied perpendicularly to the clamping face 13-1 to support securely the insert 10.
  • transitional portions 13-2 are wider than the chip forming grooves 15 in order to enable the chip discharged from the chip forming grooves 15 to be moved on the face having a sufficient area.
  • each of the transitional portions 13-2 can be fat face or curved face joining the chip forming groove 15 and the clamping face 13-1.
  • the present invention as described above can provide the insert having a positive edge and produced by machining only both side faces without additionally machining upper and lower faces, and so the time for manufacturing the insert is reduced, whereby the productivity of the insert can be improved.
