Abstract
Method for operating headlights in a motor vehicle, wherein the headlights are switched over between dipped headlights and full beam by means of signals which are formed in a control unit, in which method a light sensor which is arranged in the motor vehicle measures the light of oncoming vehicles if the headlights of the motor vehicle are operated with full beam. When an oncoming vehicle which is approaching with its headlights switched on is detected, the light sensor generates a signal which is conducted to the control unit. A signal for switching over from full beam to dipped headlights is formed in the control unit as a function of the signal of the light sensor. Said signal for switching over from full beam to dipped headlights is fed to that headlight which is arranged on the side facing the oncoming vehicle.

A method of operating headlamps in a motor vehicle, wherein the headlamps are switched between low beam and high beam by signals which are formed in a control unit, wherein a light sensor arranged in the motor vehicle measures the light of oncoming vehicles when the headlights of the motor vehicle operated with high beam become.
Such methods of operating headlamps are well-known in the art. After switching on the headlights, the driver can choose between the two types of lighting by switching on either the low beam or the high beam via a switch. Due to the emission characteristic, the high beam has the disadvantage that enticing motor vehicles are dazzled. To avoid this, the driver has to switch from high beam to low beam for oncoming vehicles.
It is also known to arrange a light sensor in the motor vehicle, preferably in the front area, which detects the backlight conditions. If an oncoming vehicle is detected when the main beam is switched on, the headlight on the vehicle side facing the oncoming vehicle is switched from the high beam to the low beam. The automatic switching from high to low beam should be achieved as early as possible to prevent oncoming vehicles from being blinded for an unnecessarily long time, because the driver does not switch to dipped beam until later or in the worst case. Despite this method, there is still the disadvantage that switching the high beam to the dipped beam causes the brightness to be considerably reduced very rapidly. is graced. The amount of time until the driver has adapted his vision to the new lighting conditions poses a certain security risk.
The present invention is therefore an object of the invention to provide a method for operating headlamps in a motor vehicle, which on the one hand reliably avoids dazzling oncoming vehicles and on the other hand requires less adaptation of the vision of the driver to changing light conditions.
The object is achieved in that the light sensor in the detection of a vehicle, which accommodates headlamps turned on, generates a signal that the signal is passed to the control unit, that in the control unit in response to the signal of the light sensor, a signal to Switching from high beam to low beam is formed, and this signal is supplied to those headlights, which is arranged on the side facing the opposite vehicle.
By only the headlight of the motor vehicle is switched from high beam to low beam, which is arranged on the side facing the oncoming vehicle, glare of the oncoming vehicle is avoided. At the same time, the brightness is reduced by switching only one headlamp to a much lesser extent than would be the case when switching both headlamps. In addition, the headlights continue to be illuminated very well by means of the headlamps, which continue to be fitted with high beam, so that persons, animals or cyclists continue to remain easily recognizable. As a result, the driver is less affected, which leads to an increase in safety.
The safety of a well-lit roadway is further increased by the fact that the headlights, due to switched to high beam when switching to a high beam headlight when the light sensor is not detecting an oncoming vehicle with headlights turned on. In this way it is ensured that shortly after the oncoming vehicle has passed, the high beam is used to illuminate the road. Delays to switch the headlamp to high beam by the driver are thereby avoided.
In a particularly advantageous embodiment, the detection of oncoming vehicles with activated headlamps, the switching from high beam to low beam and back again, automatically performed by the driver selects the appropriate lighting program. Due to the automatic execution of the individual steps of the procedure, the driver is relieved. Since the driver no longer has to take care of a timely and adequate illumination of the road in response to approaching vehicles, his concentration is less distracted from the traffic, which also contributes to increasing driving safety.
In order to further exclude a possible dazzling effect for oncoming vehicle, an embodiment has proven to be advantageous in which the high beam of the headlamp, which is arranged on the side facing away from the oncoming vehicle, is directed in the direction of the roadside. The deflection of the high beam on the side facing away from the opposite vehicle can be done in addition to switching the headlight, which is arranged on the side facing the oncoming vehicle. Such an embodiment is particularly advantageous in tight bends in which oncoming vehicles otherwise get into the light cone of the headlamp, which is arranged on the side of the motor vehicle facing the roadside. In a further advantageous embodiment, the method not only applies to oncoming vehicles with headlamps on but also in front of driving vehicles with switched taillights and / or brake lights.
Dabei zeigen:Two embodiments of the invention will be described in more detail. Showing:
Figur Ia: ein Kraftfahrzeug mit Fernlicht,FIG. 1a: a motor vehicle with high beam,
Figur Ib, c: zwei sich entgegenkommende Kraftfahrzeuge,Figure Ib, c: two oncoming motor vehicles,
Figure 2: two oncoming motor vehicles in a further embodiment.
Figure Ia shows a road 1 with two lanes 2, 3, wherein in each case one lane 2, 3 is available for traffic in one direction. On the roadway 2, a motor vehicle moves 4. The headlights 5, 6 of the motor vehicle 4 are switched to high beam 7 due to the lack of oncoming traffic. The motor vehicle 4 further has a light sensor 8, which is arranged in the present case in the front region 9 of the motor vehicle 4. It is also conceivable to arrange the light sensor 8 in the upper region of the windshield 10 of the motor vehicle 4. The light sensor 8 detects the light of oncoming vehicles.
In FIG. 1 b, the motor vehicle 4 is approached by a vehicle with turned-on headlights 11 on the roadway 3. From the light sensor 8 in the motor vehicle 4, the light of the headlights of the vehicle 11 is detected and as a result the headlight 5, which is arranged on the side facing the oncoming vehicle 11, is switched from the high beam 7 to the low beam 12. Only the headlight 6 remains on the high beam 7. As a result, a dazzling effect of the oncoming vehicle 11 by the headlight 5 avoided. By further operated with high beam 7 headlight 6 while preventing the illumination of the lane 2 is too much prevented.
As soon as the motor vehicle 4 and the vehicle 11 are at the same height, no light from the headlights of the oncoming vehicle 11 is detected by the light sensor 8, so that the headlight 5 is switched back to the high beam 7. In this way, the method achieves a significant reduction in the time in which the road surface is not maximally illuminated.
The embodiment shown in Figure 2 corresponds to the method of Figure Ib, in which after the detection of an oncoming headlamps oncoming motor vehicle 11 of the headlight 5 was switched from high beam to low beam 12. In order to further reduce a dazzling effect of oncoming traffic possible in the illustrated road course, the light cone of the high beam 7 of the headlight 6 is directed by the roadway 2 in the direction of the roadside edge 13. Thus, the illumination of the road 2 is only slightly reduced. Analogous to the representation in FIG. 1c, the light cone of the high beam 7 of the headlight 6 is deflected back from the roadside 13 onto the roadway 2 when an oncoming vehicle is detected by the light sensor 8.
