Description

A WALL PANEL UNIT AND A WALL STRUCTURE PRODUCED THEREWITH
The present invention relates to a wall panel unit of fire-proof material according to the preamble of claim 1 , the unit comprising two mainly rectangular plate-like wall panel elements, the longer sides of which are provided with edge folds produced from the edges of the wall panel element and that have been arranged to be attached against each other using the said edge folds so that a two-sided at least mainly closed wall structure part is formed. The invention also relates to a wall structure according to the preamble of claim 11 utilizing the said wall panel unit.
Finnish patent application Fl 20055614, corresponding to PCT/FI/2006/050455, discloses a known wall panel unit. The solution comprises a one-sided panel unit the longer sides of which comprise edge folds by means of which adjacent wall panel units can be installed to each other as a wall structure. Because of the mutual overlapping of the edge folds the solution allows the installation of the insulation of the panel units to be installed into as solid a fire-proof structure as possible. The solution is well suitable for use in connection with cabin compartments of especially ships and other water vehicles, because in adjacent cabin units the rear parts of the panel units, open per se, can be arranged one against the other, thereby saving material and lightening the weight of the structure. The structure can also be used on the side of the cabin corridor, when the walls of the cabin corridor are separately made.
The cabin compartments also have places in which it is possible and preferable to use a two-sided cassette-like wall panel unit and a wall structure assembled from such. A known two-sided wall construction is disclosed in US 3596424. This solution also utilizes edge folds for producing a cassette-like mainly closed structure. However, it is difficult to assemble the solution, as the wall panel elements of the waN panel unit are installed one inside the other in the direction of the longitudinal sides and the adjacent panel units are also installed longitudinally one inside the other by their edges. Thereby the assembly of the wall is carried out vertically.
The aim of the invention is to produce an improved, multi-functional two-sided wall panel unit especially suitable for various applications in ships and corresponding water vehicles, such as a construction suitable for use between the sanitation facilities and other facilities, and a wall structure produced by means of the wall panel unit in which the disadvantages of prior art have been eliminated. The aim of the invention is to produce a wall structure unit and a wall structure with a simple, thin and light structure, easy to install and with advantageous manufacturing properties. The wall structure should also fulfil the current fire safety requirements.
The aims of the invention are achieved as described in claim 1 and as disclosed in more detail in other claims.
According to the invention, the said edge folds of opposing wall panel elements comprise guide and support parts perpendicular with the surface of the wall panel elements that have been arranged to mutually cooperate so that the wall panel elements can be installed into each other mainly perpendicularly to the surface of the wall panel elements and they are kept in contact with each other without separate fastening means. Manufacturing and assembling such elements is easy, as all the edge folds needed for installing and mutually supporting form an integrated part of the actual wall panel elements, whereby the elements can be installed directly abutting to each other and no separate fastening means are needed.
By designing the said edge folds to comprise the overlapping portions in the direction of wall panel elements a structure with good fire safety properties and a rigid and strong structure is produced.
The said guide and support parts are preferably arranged so that the said parts of one wall panel element are located at least partly between the corresponding parts of the other wall panel element. Thus the wall panel element remains assembled and it can be easily transported and installed in its installation place.
The said perpendicular guide and support parts can preferably be provided with a number of alignment recesses located within a distance from each other for creating mutual positioning of the wall panel elements in the direction of the longer sides of the wall panel unit. This will help assembly of the wall panel unit and it will for its part support the fastening of the elements to each other.
In practice it will be sufficient to arrange the edge folds of the second wall panel unit to define essentially the whole depth of the wall panel unit.
In a practical solution the said edge folds are additionally designed to comprise a ridge in one edge and a groove corresponding thereto in the opposing edge. The said ridge and groove are further mutually dimensioned and designed so as to correspond with each other so that adjacent wall panel units can be installed overlapping each other via the ridges and grooves in the direction of the surfaces of the wall panel units. With this method the same edge folds can be used for both mutual fastening of the separate elements of the wall panel unit and for installing the adjacent wall panel units into each other as a solid wall structure.
In case the intention is to produce a fully closed structure, the shorter sides of the wall panel elements are provided with folds by means of which the ends of the wall panel unit can be closed and that, on the other hand, define the extension pieces extending in the direction of the surfaces of the wall panel elements and by means of which the wall panel unit can be fastened to the support structures of its installation place.
A structure with an advantageous fire safety, usability and appearance is produced when the wall panel units are made of steel sheet less than 10 mm in thickness and coated with PVC on one side. Preferably the thickness of the wall panel unit in the direction of the normal of the wall panel units is at most 50 mm. Fire safety can be further improved by arranging fire-proof material, such as mineral wool or glass wool between the wall panel elements. An element made of fire-proof material can preferably be installed inside the folds of another, i.e. inner wall panel unit before the said wall panel element is installed so that it is in contact with another wall panel element to form a compact wall panel unit.
The invention also relates to a wall structure made of a fire-proof material comprising at least two above-mentioned mainly rectangular plate-like wall panel units arranged to be attached to each other via the edge folds of the longitudinal sides of the wall panel units. In this case the said edge folds are arranged so that the wall panel units can be installed into each other in the direction of the shorter sides of the wall panel units so that once installed, they are located partly overlapped in relation to each other and locked perpendicularly to the surfaces of the wall structure without separate fastening means. The said edge folds are additionally designed and dimensioned so in the direction of the surfaces of the wall structure that adjacent wall panel units form an solid wall structure on both sides. This produces a wall structure that is tidy on both sides and that is fast and easy to install.
The mutually cooperating guide and support surfaces of the edge folds preferably comprise parts of both wall panel elements of both wall panel units. This will produce a sufficiently rigid and strong structure.
In the following, the invention is described in more detail with reference to the appended schematic drawings, in which
- figure 1 illustrates one wall panel unit according to the invention as an axonomethc sectional drawing,
- figure 2 shows the positioning of opposite panels of the wall panel unit in relation to each other,
- figure 3 illustrates the attaching of adjacent wall panel units to each other,
- figure 4 illustrates a whole wall panel unit as an axonomethc drawing,
- figure 5 illustrates a partial enlargement A of figure 4, and
- figure 6 illustrates a partial enlargement B of figure 4. With reference to figure 1 of the drawing, the wall panel unit 1 comprises a first wall panel element 2 having a surface 2a with edge folds 2b, 2c produced on both sides thereof, and a second wall panel element 3 having a surface 3a with edge folds 3b and 3c produced on both sides thereof. The edge folds 2b, 2c, 3b and 3c are located on the longer sides of the rectangular wall panel unit 1. The wall panel elements 2 and 3 are installed against each other in contact with each other by means of guide and support parts 2d and 2e and correspondingly 3d and 3e, perpendicular to the surfaces 2a and 3a of the edge folds. With a suitable design of the edge folds and thus with suitable manufacturing tolerances and friction the edge panel elements 2 and 3 stay in contact with each other without separate fastening means, whereby the whole wall panel unit 1 can be moved as necessary.
As can be seen in figure 1 , the edge folds 2b, 2c, 3b and 3c are additionally designed to comprise overlapping portions 2f, 2g, 3f and 3g, which adds rigidity to the join. The edge folds 2b, 2c, 3b and 3c are additionally arranged to together form a ridge on one side of the wall panel unit 1 and a groove on the other side thereof, whereby the guide and support parts 2d and 3d form the peak of the ridge and the guide and support parts 2e and 3e correspondingly form the bottom of the groove. The said ridge and groove and the overlapping portions of the edge folds are dimensioned so that they fit into each other so that the adjacent wall panel units 1 and 1 ' can be attached to each other via them on both sides for producing a wall structure comprising an solid level surface as shown in figure 3. Thus the same guide and support portions 2d and 3d and correspondingly 2e and 3e serve two different purposes so that they are used, on the other hand, for installing opposite wall panel elements 2 and 3 into each other and, on the other hand, for installing opposite wall panel units 1 and 1 ' into each other.
Figure 2 illustrates providing the guide and support portions 2b, 2c and/or 3c of the wall panel units 2 and 3 with suitable alignment recesses 2h and 3h, a few of which can be arranged on the longer sides of the wall panel elements 2 and 3 for accomplishing mutual positioning of the wall panel elements 2 and 3 in the direction of the longer sides of the wall panel unit 1. Figures 4, 5 and 6 illustrate the design of the shorter sides of the wall panel elements 2 and 3. Folds 5 by means of which the ends of the wall panel unit 1 can be closed are arranged on the shorter sides of the wall panel element 3. Correspondingly, the shorter sides of the second wall panel element 2 are provided with extension portions 6 extending in the direction of the surface of the wall panel element, by means of which extension parts the wall panel unit 1 can be fastened to the support structures of each installation place.
The material of the wall panel elements can preferably be, for example, steel sheet coated with PVC, whereby the surfaces of the wall structure are tidy and can as such form the ready wall structure of the installation place. If necessary, the wall panel unit 1 can be provided with insulation material in the interior thereof. It can preferably be installed inside the folds of the second, i.e. inner wall panel element 3 prior to installing the wall panel element in contact with the second wall panel element 2 to form a compact wall panel unit 1. The thickness of the wall panel unit is preferably 50 mm or less than 50 mm. If no separate insulation material is used, the thickness can preferably be essentially smaller as well, such as about 30 mm. With their extension portions the longer sides of the wall panel unit are about 2200 mm in length and the shorter sides are about 1120 mm including the edge folds. The mutual overlapping of adjacent wall panel elements is preferably about 20 mm.
The invention is not limited to the disclosed embodiments, but several modifications thereof can be conceived of within the appended claims.
