液晶表示装置及びそれを備えた電子機器
技術分野
[0001] 本発明は、携帯用電子機器または設置型電子機器の表示部として好適な液晶表 示装置及びそれを備えた電子機器に関するものであり、より詳細には、例えば、薄型 液晶表示装置の強度強化に関するものである。さらに、本発明は、一例として液晶 T V (television)等の大型液晶表示装置を含む設置型電子機器における、搬送時また は取り扱い時等の強度強化に関するものである。
背景技術
[0002] 近年、携帯用電子機器 (以下「モパイル機器」と称する。)のディスプレイ (表示部)と して液晶表示装置がよく使われて 、る。液晶表示装置は液晶表示パネルを備えてお り、この液晶表示パネルは、一般的な構成として、ガラス等力もなる透明な一対の基 板間に液晶層が狭層されてなつている。液晶表示装置は、携帯性に優れ、かつ消費 電力も小さいので、ノートパソコン用ディスプレイを始め、情報携帯端末 (PDA:Perso nal Digital Assistant)及び携帯電話等のモパイル機器に広く用いられている。上記 モノィル機器は、携帯性および利便性の面から、薄型軽量でかつ丈夫なものが求め られている。
[0003] また、液晶表示装置は、薄型 TVのような設置型の大型機器としても商品化され、そ の普及が進んでいる。これら設置型の商品に対しても、近年、薄型軽量化の要望が 強まっている。そのため、大型の液晶表示装置についても同様に、搬送時または取り 扱い時、あるいは通常の使用時に加わる外圧に十分耐え得るもので、かつ薄型軽量 なものが求められている。
[0004] このような要求に対し、液晶表示装置の薄型軽量ィ匕に対するアプローチはされてい るものの、それに伴う強度確保が難しい状態であった。
[0005] すなわち、一般的には、液晶表示装置は、図 14に示すように、導光板 102bの支持 部材として、この導光板 102bの周辺にシャーシ 107を形成した構造が採用されてい る。しかし、近年、液晶モジュールの薄型軽量ィ匕に伴って導光板 102bが薄くなつて いると共に、液晶表示装置の筐体は、 PMMA (PolyMethyl MethAcrylate)等の榭脂 にて形成されているため、剛性の強いものではない。そのため、導光板 102bの裏面 に、シャーシ 107等が原因となる段差 107aがあった場合、図 15 (a) (b)に示すように 、液晶表示パネル 101が局所的に歪む原因となり、場合によっては破壊される構造と なっていた。
[0006] また、液晶モジュール及びそれを含むモパイル機器では、レイアウト上、液晶表示 パネル、並びに z又はその他システムを駆動する駆動回路及びバッテリー等を裏面 配置する構成が多くみられる。上記駆動回路に搭載される各種チップ部品には凹凸 があると共に、上記各種チップ部品への外圧を保護するためのカバーゃスぺーサー にも凹凸が有る。このため、液晶モジュール及びそれを含むモパイル機器は、それら 凹凸間へ荷重が力かったときに、液晶表示パネルが局所的に歪み易い構造となって いる。
[0007] 液晶モジュールの導光板が薄くなり、さらにその導光板の裏面に凹凸がある場合、 表示面からの押し圧、及び落下時の駆動回路基板からの押し上げ、さらには落下時 の液晶モジュールの歪みによってガラス力 なる液晶表示パネルが歪み、破損するこ とがある。そして、それらのいずれか一つでも発生する構造の場合、商品としての機 械的強度が不十分とみなされる。したがって、持ち歩きするモパイル機器および大型 の液晶表示装置等に搭載される液晶表示パネルでは、特に、筐体部の剛性を上げ る等の何らかの対策が必要とされて 、る。
[0008] そのため、液晶表示パネルを使用した例えば、タブレット型パソコン等のモノィル機 器では、衝撃等の外力が液晶表示パネルに加わり難い構造にするために、保護板を 配置した構造を設計し、採用しているものが多く見られる。
[0009] しかし、そのような構造を採用する場合、保護板に十分な剛性が求められると共に、 液晶表示パネルと保護板との間に幾らかのギャップを形成することにより、液晶表示 パネルに力が伝わり難い構造としている。この結果、保護板および Zまたはギャップ の厚みを厚くする等の対策が必要である。このことは、最終的な商品の薄型軽量ィ匕 に逆行するので、好ましくない。
[0010] また、例えば、特許文献 1では、図 16 (a)に示すように、平板状の情報表示手段で ある液晶表示パネル 201と、この液晶表示パネル 201と同一の大きさであり、かっこ の液晶表示パネル 201の背面に密着するように保持される金属板 203と、この金属 板 203の、液晶表示パネル 201とは逆側の面に配置されて少なくとも液晶表示パネ ル 201を駆動する駆動回路を搭載した駆動回路基板 204と、液晶表示パネル 201に よる表示を目視可能な開口を有してなる図示しな 、上側ケースと、この上側ケースと 共に、液晶表示パネル 201、金属板 203、及び駆動回路基板 204を収納する図示し な 、下側ケースとを備える情報表示装置を提案して 、る。

発明の開示
[0011] しかしながら、上記従来の特許文献 1の表示装置では、表示面及び表示裏面への 荷重又は落下時の衝撃への考慮がされていない。例えば、液晶表示パネル 201表 面からの押圧力による荷重、又は液晶表示パネル 201裏面力 の突き上げ、及び変 形による局所的な歪みにより、破壊が生じる課題があった。
[0012] 具体的には、例えば、図 16 (b)に示すように、液晶表示パネル 201の上側からの荷 重により金属板 203が歪み、それに伴い液晶表示パネル 201及び導光板 202bも歪 むため、液晶表示パネル 201は破壊されてしまう。その原因として、例えば、金属板 2 03でも薄ければ橈み易いこと、及び金属板 203と駆動回路基板 204との間に段差 2 04aがあることによって、その段差 204aで液晶表示パネル 201等が屈曲するという 問題を有している。
[0013] 本発明は、上記従来の問題点に鑑みなされたものであって、その目的は、液晶表 示パネルの表示面への荷重、及び落下時の衝撃に対して破損の可能性を軽減し得 る液晶表示装置及びそれを備えた電子機器を提供することにある。
[0014] 本発明の液晶表示装置は、上記課題を解決するために、液晶表示パネルと、バッ クライトと、上記液晶表示パネル及びバックライトを駆動する駆動回路基板とを備えた 液晶表示装置であって、上記バックライトと上記駆動回路基板との間に、該バックライ トよりも広 、領域の平面を有する剛性材料力 なる板としての剛性板が設けられて ヽ ると共に、上記剛性板の少なくとも一対の互いに対向する端部には、上記駆動回路 基板側に突出する立下り部が該端部に沿って形成されていることを特徴としている。 なお、剛性板の形状としては、長方形、正方形の他、台形や多角形でもよい。
[0015] 上記発明によれば、上記バックライトと上記駆動回路基板との間に、該バックライト よりも広い領域の平面を有する剛性板が設けられている。したがって、ノ ックライトの 全体が剛性板の面で支持されて 、るので、液晶表示パネルの上側から荷重がかか つたとしても、剛性板の角によってバックライトが屈曲されると 、うことがな!/、。
[0016] また、剛性板の少なくとも一対の互いに対向する端部には、上記駆動回路基板側 に突出する立下り部が該端部に沿って形成されている。したがって、この端部に沿う 立下り部が存在することによって、剛性板が固定端支持梁 (fixed beam)となり得る。ま た、剛性板が上記立下り部を備えた形状を有していることにより、剛性板の断面 2次 モーメントも大きくなるので、橈みが低減する。そして、この効果は、剛性板の少なくと も一対の互いに対向する端部に、該端部に沿って立下り部が形成されていさえすれ ば足りる。
[0017] この結果、液晶表示パネルの表示面への荷重、及び落下時の衝撃に対して破損 の可能性を軽減し得る液晶表示装置を提供することができる。
[0018] また、本発明の液晶表示装置では、前記剛性板の少なくとも一対の互いに対向す る端部には、上記駆動回路基板側とは反対側に突出する立上り部が該端部に沿つ て形成されて 、ることが好まし 、。
[0019] 上記発明によれば、剛性板の少なくとも一対の互いに対向する端部には、上記駆 動回路基板側とは反対側に突出する立上り部が該端部に沿って形成されているの で、さらに、断面 2次モーメントが大きくなるので、橈みが低減する。
[0020] また、本発明の液晶表示装置では、前記剛性板は、矩形に形成されていることが好 ましい。なお、矩形とは、長方形又は正方形、あるいは長方形又は正方形に近い形 状をいう。
[0021] これにより、液晶表示装置の形状が一般的な矩形の場合に、液晶表示パネルの表 示面への荷重、及び落下時の衝撃に対して破損の可能性を軽減し得る液晶表示装 置を提供することができる。
[0022] また、本発明の液晶表示装置では、前記剛性板は、矩形に形成されて!、ると共に、 前記剛性板の四辺の各端部には、該端部に沿う立下り部と立上り部との両方が形成 されていることが好ましい。

[0027] これにより、剛性板として一般的な金属板を容易に用いることができると共に、金属 板は立下り部の加工を容易に行うことができるので、コストも安価である。さらに、金属 板は液晶表示装置の接地用に用いることができると共に、駆動回路基板及びバック ライトからの発熱に対し、放熱効果を加味することが可能となる。

[0030] また、本発明の液晶表示装置では、前記液晶表示パネル、バックライト、剛性板、 及び駆動回路基板を収納する筐体が設けられていると共に、前記剛性板の立上り部 の上端及び立下り部の下端の少なくとも一方は、上記筐体と接触していることが好ま しい。

[0033] これにより、少なくとも前記液晶表示パネル、バックライト、及び剛性板を一体に支 持する枠部材を用いることができるので、液晶表示パネル、ノ ックライト、及び剛性板 を液晶モジュールとして一体ィ匕した単位で扱うことができる。また、剛性板における立 上り部の上端及び立下り部の下端の少なくとも一方を、枠部材と筐体との少なくとも 一方に接触させることにより、剛性板が固定端支持梁として機能するので、橈みを低 減することができる。また、液晶表示装置の表面又は裏面からの衝撃を、筐体から枠 部材を介して剛性の高 、剛性板へ分散させることができるので、液晶表示装置の損 傷の可能性が低減される。

[0046] 上記液晶表示パネル 1の裏面に配置されるバックライトとしてのバックライトシステム 2は、例えば蛍光管又は LED等の発光体である光源 2aと、その光源 2aの光を液晶 表示パネル 1の全面にいきわたらせるための導光板 2bとを備えている。なお、本発明 では、必ずしも導光板 2bを有していなくてもよい。また、必要に応じて、導光板 2bか らの光を均一に分散するため、又は光の利用効率を上げるベぐ図示しない光学シ ートを液晶表示パネル 1と導光板 2bとの間に配置してもよい。さらに、導光板 2bの裏 面には、光源 2aからの光の利用効率を上げるベぐ図示しない反射シートを配置す ることが可能である。
[0047] 上記金属板 3は、例えばアルミニウム合金、マグネシウム合金、チタニウム合金、又 は SUS (ステンレス鋼)等の金属材料カゝらなり、長方形または略長方形に形成されて いる。金属は比較的剛性の高い材料なので、金属板 3に適している。なお、長方形は 、概念として、正方形を含む。また、本発明では、必ずしも金属板 3に限らず、他の剛 性材料力もなる例えばカーボン榭脂やその他の硬質のセラミック材料力もなる板であ つてもよい。
[0048] また、駆動回路基板 4は、金属板 3の裏面に図示しない絶縁シートを介して配され ており、上記液晶表示パネル 1及びバックライトシステム 2を駆動する集積回路ゃバッ テリー等を含んでいる。上記駆動回路基板 4は、片面実装であり、フラットな面は金属 板 3の裏面と接触させて配置する。この場合、駆動回路基板 4を金属板 3に図示しな ぃネジ止めをすることにより剛性を上げると共に、駆動回路基板 4の GNDを金属板 3 に接続するのが好ましい。

[0055] 本実施の形態では、まず、液晶表示装置 10の裏面の段差をなくしつつ、薄型軽量 にて液晶表示装置 10の裏面の剛性を上げ、その上面に位置する液晶表示パネル 1 が歪み難 、構造を可能にするものとなって 、る。

[0058] この結果、図 4に示すように、液晶表示パネル 1の表面側力も荷重が力かったとして も、上記バックライトシステム 2における導光板 2bの一部が屈曲することにはならない 。また、液晶表示パネル 1の表示面を下にして落下した場合の衝撃を金属板 3の外 周部にて受けるため、衝撃が分散される。なお、立下り部 3a及び立上り部 3bは、必 要に応じて GFRP (ガラス繊維強化プラスチック; Glass Fiber Reinforced Plastics)等 にて形成しても良い。

[0079] ところで、特許文献 1においても、図 16 (a)に示すように、裏面に端部の立上り部を 有しない金属板 203を配置する構造の提案がある。しかし、その金属板 203の端部、 すなわち立上り部を形成していない部分において、図 16 (b)に示すように、上側から の荷重に対して金属板 203が歪み、それに伴い液晶表示パネル 201及び導光板 20 2bも歪むため、液晶表示パネル 201は破壊されてしまう。また、その金属板 203に図 示しない窪みをつけることによる剛性アップの記載もある。しかし、窪みをつけることに よって導光板 202bの裏面に段差形状を作ることとなるため、導光板 202bの裏面の 段差を無くすという理想の構成に反する。さらに、液晶表示パネル 201の表示面側か ら荷重を加えた場合、液晶表示パネル 201が歪み、むしろ割れ易い構造となってし まつ。

[0092] つまり、ノ ックライトシステムの裏面に金属板 203又は金属板 3を配置する場合、そ の周縁部の形状によって、面荷重、及び自重落下時に発生する歪み (たわみ量)を 軽減することが可能である。したがって、本実施の形態の構成によれば、薄型軽量に て液晶表示パネル 1の歪み量を抑え、使用時に起こり得る荷重、自重落下、及び表 示面への物の落下等の外的な力に対する液晶表示装置 10の強度アップが可能とな る。
[0093] このように、本実施の形態の液晶表示装置 10では、液晶表示パネル 1の表示面側 への保護板の配置等による表示性能を落とす対策を行なうのではなぐ液晶表示パ ネル 1の裏面及び周辺の形状の改善として、金属板 3の構成を工夫している。これに より、液晶表示パネル 1の表示面からの押し圧及び自重落下時の駆動回路基板 4か らの押し上げ、さらには自重落下時の液晶モジュールの歪みによる液晶表示パネル 1の破壊を軽減することが可能となる。この結果、液晶表示パネル 1にかかる曲げ応 力を抑え、薄型軽量にて強度確保を可能にする液晶表示装置 10を提供することが 可能となった。
[0094] 以上のように、本実施の形態の液晶表示装置 10では、ノ ックライトシステム 2と駆動 回路基板 4との間に、バックライトシステム 2よりも広い領域の平面を有する剛性材料 からなる板 (以下、剛性板と略記する)が設けられている。したがって、ノ ックライトシス テム 2の全体が剛性板の面で支持されて 、るので、液晶表示パネル 1の上側力 荷 重がかかったとしても、剛性板の角によってバックライトシステム 2が屈曲されるという ことがない。

[0104] また、本実施の形態の液晶表示装置 10では、少なくとも液晶表示パネル 1、ノ ック ライトシステム 2、及び剛性板を一体に支持するべゼル 12を用いることができ、これに よって液晶表示パネル 1、ノ ックライトシステム 2、及び剛性板 3を液晶モジュールとし て一体ィ匕した単位で扱うことができる。また、剛性板における立上り部 3bの上端及び 立下り部 3aの下端の少なくとも一方を、べゼル 12と筐体 11との少なくとも一方に接触 させること〖こより、剛性板が固定端支持梁として機能するので、橈みを低減することが できる。また、液晶表示装置 10の表面又は裏面からの衝撃を、筐体 11からべゼル 1 2を介して剛性の高い剛性板へ分散させることができるので、液晶表示装置 10の損 傷が低減される。
[0105] また、本実施の形態の液晶表示装置 10では、バックライトシステム 2は、導光板 2b を有している。これにより、ノ ックライトシステム 2の薄型化を図ることができる。

[0109] 本発明は、液晶表示パネルと、ノ ックライトと、上記液晶表示パネル及びバックライト を駆動する駆動回路基板とを備えた液晶表示装置及びそれを備えた携帯用電子機 器に適用できる。携帯用電子機器としては、例えばタブレット型パソコン、ノートバソコ ン用ディスプレイ、情報携帯端末 (PDA:Personal Digital Assistant)及び携帯電話に 適用できる。

V、インフォーメーションディスプレイ等の大型液晶表示装置においても、搬送時また は取り扱い時等に起こり得る外的負荷が加わる場合の強度確保にも効果を奏する。

Claims

請求の範囲
[1] 液晶表示パネルと、バックライトと、上記液晶表示パネル及びバックライトを駆動す る駆動回路基板とを備えた液晶表示装置であって、
上記バックライトと上記駆動回路基板との間に、該バックライトよりも広い領域の平面 を有する剛性材料力 なる板としての剛性板が設けられていると共に、
上記の液晶表示パネル、ノ ックライト、駆動回路基板および剛性板を収容する筐体 を備え、
上記剛性板の少なくとも一対の互いに対向する端部には、上記駆動回路基板側に 突出する立下り部が該端部に沿って形成されており、該立下り部は、上記筐体の内 面に接触して、少なくとも上記液晶表示パネルおよびバックライトを上記剛性板と一 体的に支持するように構成されて 、る液晶表示装置。
[2] 前記剛性板の少なくとも一対の互いに対向する端部には、上記駆動回路基板側と は反対側に突出する立上り部が該端部に沿って形成されている請求項 1記載の液晶 表示装置。
[3] 上記立上り部は、前記筐体の内面に接触して、少なくとも上記液晶表示パネルおよ びバックライトを上記剛性板と一体的に支持するように構成された請求項 2に記載の 液晶表示装置。
[4] 前記剛性板は、矩形に形成されて!、る請求項 1記載の液晶表示装置。
[5] 前記剛性板の少なくとも一対の互いに対向する端部には、該端部に沿って上記立 下り部と、立下り部とは逆向きに突出した立上り部との両方が形成されている請求項
1記載の液晶表示装置。
[6] 前記剛性板は、金属板である請求項 1記載の液晶表示装置。
[7] 前記金属板は、アルミニウム合金又はマグネシウム合金力 なっている請求項 6記 載の液晶表示装置。
[8] 前記剛性板の立上り部の上端及び立下り部の下端の少なくとも一方は、上記筐体 と接触して ヽる請求項 5記載の液晶表示装置。
[9] 少なくとも前記液晶表示パネル、バックライト、及び剛性板を一体に支持する枠部 材と、 前記液晶表示パネル、バックライト、剛性板、駆動回路基板、及び上記枠部材を収 容する筐体とが設けられて!/ヽると共に、
前記剛性板における立上り部の上端及び立下り部の下端の少なくとも一方は、上 記枠部材と筐体との少なくとも一方に接触している請求項 5記載の液晶表示装置。
[10] 前記バックライトは、導光板を有して 、る請求項 1に記載の液晶表示装置。
[11] 前記剛性板は、矩形に形成されている請求項 1記載の液晶表示装置。
