Definitions

  • the present invention relates to a steering device for operating steering means on vehicles, e.g. steerable wheels on a land vehicle or a rudder on a boat, comprising a manual steering implement, a hub joined to said steering implement, a steering shaft rotatable by means of the hub and a locking device which has a locking position in which turning of the steering shaft by means of the steering implement is prevented.
  • This steering wheel lock is commonly a locking plunger which is diplaceably mounted in a housing which is securely joined to the steering post to which the steering shaft is rotatably mounted. In the locking position the locking plunger is spring-biased towards the steering shaft which is provided with a cavity into which the plunger snaps after a certain amount of turning of the wheel, whereafter the steering shaft and thus the steering wheel are blocked against additional rotation.
  • steering locks of this type are not too difficult to break through. Some steering locks break and become unlocked if sufficient torque is applied to the steering wheel without thereby breaking other vital components for the steering function. Other steering wheel locks can be broken through by breaking of the locking plunger housing from the steering column.
  • the steering device comprises first and second lock plungers which are alternatively insertable in a radial bore in the hub, said bore in a position of the hub relative to the steering shaft opening directly facing a radial cavity in the steering shaft or in an element non-rotatably joined to the steering shaft, the first plunger being lockable in the bore in a position in which its inner end projects into the cavity to lock the hub to the steering shaft, and the second lock plunger being lockable in the bore in a position in which its inner end is located radially outside the cavity, so that the steering wheel hub is disengaged from the steering shaft.
  • the steering device according to the invention is primarily, but not exclusively, intended for boats which are usually used during weekends and on vacation but are otherwise left at berth during the intervening periods and constitute an advantageous alternative to a steering wheel with a quick coupling, since the first locking plunger is simpler and is much less bulky to take with than an entire steering wheel when the boat is left.

  • the lock 24 has a constant diameter over its entire length and thus lacks an inner portion corresponding to the portion 23b of the first plunger 23, it cannot be pressed into the bore 22 in the element 6 with the aid of a mandrel and a hammer.
  • the invention provides a simple and effective theft protection which eliminates many of the disadvantages of hitherto known steering wheel lock devices.
