Abstract
 A detachable steering wheel mounted paddle operated wireless throttle device has a paddle 1.2 with mounting holes 1.3 for attachment to a hinge 1.5 with mounting holes 1.4 for paddle attachment. A paddle hinge stop screw 1.1 is provided to limit the paddle travel during use. A sensor housing 1.9 contains a waterproof Hall Effect sensor 1.7 and a magnet 1.8. A paddle pivot pin 1.6 secures the final assembly of the completed device. A steering wheel adaptor boss 1.10 and spring 1.11 enable connection to a vehicle/vessel steering wheel. A two piece paddle damper assembly 1.12 and paddle pivot pin lock nut 1.13 are provided to manually set a constant throttle position if desired.
Description
Detachable Steering Wheel Mounted "Fly By Wire" Paddle Operated Throttle Device This device is primarily designed to be used as a detachable steering wheel mounted paddle operated "fly by wire" throttle for boats, it is able to fit steering wheels of all types along with any other vehicle that could utilise steering wheel mounted fingertip operated throttle control, the device is adjustable for hand span and offset to allow it to fit all types and sizes of detachable or non detachable steering wheel. Although detachable the paddle throttle assembly is designed to remain mounted to the steering wheel at all times.
The device has dual throttle operating functions, equally capable of being operated as a sprung loaded fingertip controlled conventional throttle it also features an integrally adjustable throttle damping device which allows the throttle position to be manually set and remain in the desired position, this is for when a constant throttle position is preferred. For safety reasons the throttle damping device is designed such that the throttle position is still easily adjusted by fingertips even once the throttle position is set with the damper engaged, to explain this would then operate as conventional boat throttles do.
The device is operated using "fly by wire" technology, the paddle throttle is operably connected to an internally housed waterproof hall effect potentiometer or other angular position sensing device which in turn signals the vehicles Electronic Control Unit (ECU) via centrally mounted plug in cable connections. It is designed to be operably connected to a removable steering wheel and to be attached to the steering column via commonly used quick detachable steering wheel bosses of all types.
Note:-There are many versions of detachable steering wheel to steering column methods which are commonly used in race cars but for the purposes of this document we will show the most popular "Formula' type which features a three bolt 44mm PCD attachment.
The benefits of the detachable steering wheel mounted paddle throttle device are that it offers fingertip throttle control which is a safety factor because not having to remove the hands from the steering wheel to operate throttles allows the operator to look ahead and control the vehicle at all times. Furthermore it offers the highly desirable safety factor that once the steering wheel paddle throttle assembly is removed it renders the vehicle's steering and engine inoperable thus making theft virtually impossible.
