Abstract

Since the shortage of space on the lateral sides of the skips on 6x4 (26T) and 8x4 (32T) haulage lorries and on some 14T and 19T lorries did not enable the spare wheel to be fitted on the sides as is the practice with trailers or the like, coachbuilders previously used to fit the spare wheel holder on the rear door of the skips. This design constitutes a road safety hazard, since in the event of the wheel breaking loose, the vehicle behind is in danger of receiving this wheel head on. Also the driver had a lot of trouble in handling and changing the spare wheel. The new regulations have been passed to prevent this practice which is now considered hazardous to road safety. The invention of the spare wheel stand between the skip box and the lorry cab comes in response to this road safety requirement. Furthermore the use of a sliding carriage enables the driver to undertake the replacement of the spare wheel without stress and in better health and safety conditions. To position said holder, the hydraulic tank has had to be moved to the left-hand side of the vehicle and the holder placed on the right-hand side, this configuration has been chosen to prevent the flow of traffic being disrupted when the driver is forced to park on the roadway to replace the spare wheel.
