- Figure 10 is a schematic view of a detachable device according to an exemplary embodiment of the present invention.
- FIGS 1 1 and 12 are schematic views of the device as indicated in detail in Figure 10.
- FIG. 1 there is a schematic representation of the main components of a card having personal details stored thereon such as a credit card including a drop-it device according to a first exemplary embodiment of the present invention.
- a card having personal details that are on is generally indicated in schematic form and include an accelerometer 3 of various types.
- An important feature for the type of accelerometer 3 utilised is that it must be sufficiently thin in order to fit in or on a credit card, for example, both analog and digital accelerometers could be utilised, and, alternatively, a piezoelectric sensor could be utilised wherein the acceleration is calculated based upon the charges derived from the microscopic crystalline structures when they are accelerated due to motion.
- a piezoelectric device could be used in a sensor which reacts to the shock of the card hitting the ground, thereby causing a voltage within the device which in turn sends a signal to the warning buzzer 7 via the drive circuit.
- the warning buzzer is generally audible, however, it will be appreciated that other warning signals could be utilised including a visible signal.
- a battery such as a polymer gel-filled battery 4 is provided in order to drive the circuit and external battery charge contact 8 additionally provided.
- a battery charge and battery level monitoring circuit 9 may also be provided.
- the warning buzzer driver as indicated as 1 1 and the processor 10 for the accelerometer of whichever type is required is also provided.
- a multi-axis free-fall accelerometer is used, through single or back-to-back motion sensors. This means that acceleration in any direction will result in the alarm being activated rather than the alarm only being activated if the device falls in a downward direction. For example, when an object is lost, it may fall in a non-vertical plane and as such, the alarm may not activate. However, using this multi-axis accelerometer will ensure that the ala ⁇ n is activated irrespective of the direction of acceleration of the device.
- a specific example of a multi-axis accelerometer is a reverse flux pivot polarity motion sensor.
- the sensor causes the device to fall in a non-linear manner, i.e. causes side-to- side movement of the device therefore providing an improved visible effect of the item on which/in which the device is located.
- the alarm is arranged to sound immediately when an acceleration is detected, and may continue once the device has contacted the ground, or alternatively may switch off at this point.
- the opposing polarity of acceleration caused by the oscillating or seesaw motion of the falling device causes acceleration to be sensed by two opposing acceleration sensors and as such causes a signal to be sent to the buzzer 7 to be activated.
- the sensing pattern can be tuned via a signal processor for a number of fall profiles (i.e. not just a seesaw falling motion).
- a number of fall profiles i.e. not just a seesaw falling motion.
- An example of the motion of the falling device is indicated in Figure I a, where Fl to F4 is the device at these points of the fall, P is the change in polarity and ⁇ > is the change in direction. '
- an object such as a credit card will generally be lost when it falls to the ground, and the accelerometer 3 such as a multi-axis free fall device will enable falling of the card to be determined.
- the processor 10 calculates that the credit card is or has fallen and, as such, is likely to have been lost, sending a signal (preferably when the device is falling) to the buzzer driver which in turn causes the warning buzzer 7 to be activated.
- the battery 4 may periodically be charged to provide power for the ala ⁇ n.
- the arrangement is a detachable device that may be attached to an object as required.
- the functioning of this embodiment is the same as indicated in respect of Figure 1 , however, an additional feature is provided of a radio transmitter circuit 1 and radio receiver circuit 2, transmitter aerial 6 and receiver aerial 5, which may function by the device transmitter circuit 1 sending out a signal to a receiving device carried by a user such as a key fob or a purse for example, and in the event that a predetermined distance is exceeded, the receiving device transmits a signal back to the disc through the receiver circuit 2, and subsequently causes an alarm signal to be transmitted,
- the device When the card having personal details thereon or detachable drop it disc warning device (such as a multi-axis free fall device) is dropped, the device operates by the accelerometer 7 changing its output signal from a stable condition to a new value. This signal is received by the accelerometer processor 10. The accelerometer processor then sends an output signal to the buzzer driver circuit 1 1 , which in turn sounds the warning buzzer 3 for a fixed time period. When the accelerometer output signal stabilises, the accelerometer detects the change and feeds the signal and feeds the signal to the buzzer driver 1 1. The buzzer driver in turn then counts clown a predefined time period and switches off the buzzer 3. It will be appreciated that the accelerometer can be a multi-axis accelerometer, and the device may additionally include a flux pivot polarity motion sensor (not shown).
- the device when the card or detachable drop it disc warning device is taken more than, for example, three metres from the user the device operates by the transmitter circuit sending out a signal to a receiver that is located on a user, key fob, purse etc.. As indicated with respect to Figure 4, the receiving device then transmits a signal back to the card via transmitter aerial 6 where it is received by the radio receiver circuit 2 and receiving aerial 5. The card then sends a second signal back to the users receiving device which calculates the distance the credit card is located from the user. The user's receiving device then sounds a warning that the card is out of range.
- the device may not include the drop-it features of the accelerometer, and instead may simply provide a system according to a second aspect of the present invention.
- the receiver and transmitter circuits 1 , 2 the credit card and detachable drop-it disc lost warning device attach to object module, and include a battery monitor and battery charge circuit 2. This additional circuitry undertakes several tasks.
- the drop-it device can be incorporated into any embodiment of credit card security cards, identity cards, loyalty cards, driving licence cards or any smart card. It is a versatile product using the same technology as a detachable item or a stick on / latch on / tag on embodiment which could be attached to any item not wishing to be lost. Thus the audible warning would engage and alert the person that their property has just fallen or is falling and thus will be able to recover it via the alert audible warning device. Additional to this the device also possesses the ability to give an audible warning via a transmitted radio signal when the personal item drops or moves more than three metres away from the user. This aspect of the present invention can be utilised in addition to, or separate from, the invention relating to the sensing of an item of personal property having been dropped.
- the drop-it device is made of a small electronic circuit plus a power supply which may be attached or incorporated within a 'personal item' such as an item for personal valuables, for the purpose of producing an audible alarm on the occasion of it being dropped.
- the electronic circuit incorporates micro-scale components and an electrical power supply, which are able to monitor a drop in the position of the item to which it is attached, above sea level. Conductivity of an electrical impulse may be through its construction.
- the drop it device may either be in the form of a 'stick on' embodiment which may be transferred from one personal item to another personal item such as a key fob or wallet, or incorporated into the embodiment of an item such as a credit/identity card.
- the electronic components may be incorporated into a VLSI micro-chip with an integrated small scale battery.
- an audible alarm is produced alerting the owner of the item.
- Figure 5 schematically shows illustrates the schematic diagram of the technology, which incorporates a small scale power supply 101 connected to two individual air-pressure sensitive components 102, 103 (one starting position, one current position) linked to an electrat audio output component 104, via a switch 105.
- Figure 6 is a schematic representation of an exemplary embodiment of a detachable device.
- the device comprises two releasably connectable components 202, 203 arranged to releasably connect to one another, and each providing a connecting point for connecting to an item of personal property.
- the device is configured in this way to enable two devices to be releasably connected for ease of carrying, and to be disconnected and subsequently attached to items of personal property as required.
- component 202 is indicated in more detail and comprises a housing 205 having a souiidhole therein and incorporating a battery 207.
- a removable battery cover 3 is provided, and a housing 209 is provided to separate the various components of the device.
- a removable battery cover 21 1 is also provided to enable the battery to be changed or charged as required.
- a printed circuit board 213 is also provided, which links electronic components 6 such as accelerometer, battery monitor and buzzer driver, to the buzzer 215.
