Abstract
3座配位子を有する部分構造を持つ特定構造の金属錯体化合物、並びに、一対の電極間に少なくとも発光層を有する一層又は複数層からなる有機薄膜層が挟持されている有機エレクトロルミネッセンス素子において、該有機薄膜層の少なくとも1層が、前記金属錯体化合物を含有し、両極間に電圧を印加することにより発光する有機エレクトロルミネッセンス素子であり、短波長の発光で、色純度の高い青色発光が得られる有機エレクトロルミネッセンス素子及びそれを実現する金属錯体化合物を提供する。

明 細 書
金属錯体化合物及びそれを用いた有機エレクト口ルミネッセンス素子 技術分野
[0001] 本発明は、新規な金属錯体ィ匕合物及びそれを用いた有機エレクト口ルミネッセンス 素子に関し、特に、発光波長が短波長化されて青色発光が得られ、発光効率が高く 、長寿命の有機エレクト口ルミネッセンス素子及びそれを実現する金属錯体ィ匕合物に 関するものである。
背景技術
[0002] 近年、有機エレクト口ルミネッセンス (EL)素子を液晶に代わるカラーディスプレイ用 表示装置として用いることが活発に検討されている。しかし、大画面化を実現するに はまだその発光素子性能は不足して 、る。この有機 EL素子の性能向上手段として、 りん光発光材料としてオルソメタル化イリジウム錯体 (fac- tris(2- phenylpyridine)iridiu m)を発光材料に用いた緑色発光素子が提案されている(非特許文献 1;非特許文献 2)。
りん光発光を利用した有機 EL素子は、現状では緑色発光に限られるために、カラ 一ディスプレイとしての適用範囲は狭ぐ他の色についても発光特性が改善された素 子の開発が望まれていた。特に青色発光素子については、外部量子収率 5%を超え るものは報告されておらず、青色発光素子の改善ができればフルカラー化及び白色 化が可能となり、りん光 EL素子の実用化に向けて大きく前進する。
[0003] 現状、りん光発光錯体として、 Irを含む化合物の開発が活発に行われており、緑色 発光素子用としては下記化合物 Aが知られている。一方、青色発光素子としては、下 記化合物 Bが知られている力 素子の寿命、効率の点で実用的でない。そこで、その 他の青色発光素子用の錯体を開発する必要性があるが、現状では、化合物 B以外 に青色化する因子が見出されて 、な 、。
化合物 A 化合物 B 以上は 2座キレート配位子を用いた錯体群である力 類似の 3座キレート配位子を 用いた錯体は殆ど知られておらず、以下に示す化合物 C (非特許文献 3)、化合物 D (非特許文献 4)が知られている程度である。し力しながら、これらの発光波長は 585 〜600應の赤色領域であり、青色領域ではない。この新しい配位子群で青色領域発 光の錯体が実現できれば、また新たな技術展開の可能性がある。

発明が解決しょうとする課題
[0006] 本発明は、前記の課題を解決するためになされたもので、発光波長が短波長化さ れて青色発光が得られ、発光効率が高ぐ長寿命の有機 EL素子及びそれを実現す る金属錯体化合物を提供することを目的とする。
課題を解決するための手段
[0007] 本発明者らは下記一般式(1)〜(3)に含まれるような 3座キレート配位子力もなる部 分構造を持つ金属錯体化合物を用いると、発光波長が短波長化され、青色発光が 得られるという青色化の新たな構造因子を明らかにし、本発明を完成するに至った。 すなわち、本発明は、 3座キレート配位子を有する下記一般式(1)〜(3)のいずれ かで表される部分構造を有する金属錯体化合物を提供するものである。

発明の効果
[0015] 本発明の金属錯体ィ匕合物を有機 EL素子用材料として用いると、発光波長が短波 長化されて青色発光が得られ、発光効率が高ぐ長寿命の有機 EL素子を提供する ことができる。
発明を実施するための最良の形態
[0016] 本発明の金属錯体化合物は、下記一般式(1)、(2)又は(3)で表される 3座キレー ト配位子を有する金属錯体化合物である。
一般式(1)〜(3)において、実線は共有結合を、点線は配位結合を示す。 以下、まず、一般式 (1)の金属錯体ィ匕合物について説明する。

[0017] 一般式(1)において、 Mは、周期律表第 9族のいずれかの 3価の金属原子であり、 例えば、 Co (コバルト)、 Rh (ロジウム)、 Ir (イリジウム)原子等が挙げられ、 Irが好まし い。
一般式(1)において、 〜 は、それぞれ独立に、置換基を有しても良い炭素数 5 〜30の芳香族炭化水素基、置換基を有しても良い炭素数 2〜30の複素環基、又は 周期律表第 14〜17族のいずれかの原子を含有する基である。
前記芳香族炭化水素基としては、例えば、ベンゼン、ナフタレン、アントラセン、フエ ナントレン、ピレン、ビフエ-ル、ターフェ-ル、フルオランテン等の残基が挙げられる
前記複素環基としては、例えば、イミダゾール、ベンゾイミダゾール、ピロール、フラ ン、チォフェン、ベンゾチォフェン、ォキサジァゾリン、インドリン、カルバゾール、ピリ ジン、キノリン、イソキノリン、ベンゾキノン、ピラロジン、イミダゾリジン、ピぺリジン等の 残基が挙げられる。
[0018] 前記周期律表第 14〜17族の原子としては、 C (炭素)、 N (窒素)、 0 (酸素)、 Si (ケ ィ素)、 P (リン)、 S (硫黄)、 Ge (ゲルマニウム)、 As (ヒ素)、 Se (セレン)原子、ハロゲ ン原子等が挙げられ、炭素、窒素、酸素原子、塩素原子が好ましい。
このような周期律表第 14〜17族の原子を含有する基としては、それぞれ独立に、 その原子自体の他、シァノ基、ハロゲン原子、置換基を有してもよい炭素数 1〜12の アルキル基、置換基を有してもよい炭素数 1〜12のアルキルアミノ基、置換基を有し てもよい炭素数 6〜20のァリールアミノ基、置換基を有してもよい炭素数 1〜12のァ ルコキシ基、置換基を有してもよい炭素数 1〜12のハロゲンィ匕アルコキシ基、置換基 を有してもょ 、炭素数 6〜20のァリールォキシ基、置換基を有してもょ 、炭素数 6〜 20の芳香族炭化水素基、置換基を有してもよい炭素数 3〜20の複素環基、置換基 を有してもょ 、炭素数 1〜 12のハロゲン化アルキル基、置換基を有してもよ!ヽ炭素数 2〜 12のアルケニル基、置換基を有してもよい炭素数 2〜 12のアルキ-ル基、又は 置換基を有してもよい炭素数 3〜20のシクロアルキル基等が挙げられる。

前記アルコキシ基は— OY'と表され、 Y'としては、前記アルキル基で挙げたものと 同様のものが挙げられる。
前記ハロゲン化アルコキシ基としては、前記アルコキシ基の水素原子が前記ハロゲ ン原子で置換されたものが挙げられる。
前記ァリールォキシ基は— OY"と表され、 Y"としては、前記芳香族炭化水素基で 挙げたものと同様のものが挙げられる。
前記ハロゲン化アルキル基としては、前記アルキル基の水素原子が前記ハロゲン 原子で置換されたものが挙げられる。
前記ァルケ-ル基としては、例えば、ビュル基、ァリル基、 2—ブテニル基、 3—ペン テニル基等が挙げられる。
前記アルキニル基としては、例えば、ェチュル基、メチルェチュル基等が挙げられ る。
前記シクロアルキル基としては、例えば、シクロプロピル基、シクロブチル基、シクロ ペンチル基、シクロへキシル基等が挙げられる。

本発明の有機 EL素子は、陽極と陰極力もなる一対の電極間に少なくとも発光層を 有する一層又は複数層からなる有機薄膜層が挟持されている有機 EL素子において 、該有機薄膜層の少なくとも 1層が、本発明の一般式(1)〜(3)から選ばれる少なくと も一種で表される金属錯体ィ匕合物を含有するものである。
前記有機薄膜層中の本発明の金属錯体ィ匕合物の含有量としては、発光層全体の 質量に対し、通常 0. 1〜: L00重量%であり、 1〜30重量%であると好ましい。
本発明の有機 EL素子は、前記発光層が、本発明の金属錯体化合物を発光材料
又はドーパントとして含有すると好ましい。また、通常、前記発光層は真空蒸着又は 塗布により薄膜ィ匕するが、塗布の方が製造プロセスが簡略ィ匕できることから、本発明 の金属錯体化合物を含有する層が、塗布により成膜されてなると好ましい。
本発明の有機 EL素子において、有機薄膜層が単層型のものとしては有機薄膜層 が発光層であり、この発光層が本発明の金属錯体化合物を含有する。また、多層型 の有機 EL素子としては、(陽極 Z正孔注入層(正孔輸送層) Z発光層 Z陰極)、(陽 極 Z発光層 Z電子注入層(電子輸送層) Z陰極)、(陽極 Z正孔注入層(正孔輸送 層) Z発光層 Z電子注入層 (電子輸送層) Z陰極)等が挙げられる。

また、本発明の有機 EL素子において、電子注入'輸送層を構成する物質として、 絶縁体又は半導体の無機化合物を使用することが好ましい。電子注入'輸送層が絶 縁体や半導体で構成されていれば、電流のリークを有効に防止して、電子注入性を 向上させることができる。このような絶縁体としては、アルカリ金属カルコゲ -ド、アル カリ土類金属カルコゲニド、アルカリ金属のハロゲン化物及びアルカリ土類金属のハ ロゲン化物力 なる群力 選択される少なくとも一つの金属化合物を使用するのが好 ましい。電子注入'輸送層がこれらのアルカリ金属カルコゲ-ド等で構成されていれ ば、電子注入性をさらに向上させることができる点で好ましい。
具体的に、好ましいアルカリ金属カルコゲ-ドとしては、例えば、 Li 0、 Na S、 Na

Se等が挙げられ、好ましいアルカリ土類金属カルコゲ-ドとしては、例えば、 CaO、 B aO、 SrO、 BeO、 BaS及び CaSeが挙げられる。また、好ましいアルカリ金属のハロゲ ン化物としては、例えば、 LiF、 NaF、 KF、 LiCl、 KC1及び NaCl等が挙げられる。ま た、好ましいアルカリ土類金属のハロゲン化物としては、例えば、 CaF、 BaF、 SrF

[0045] また、電子注入'輸送層を構成する半導体としては、 Ba、 Ca、 Sr、 Yb、 Al、 Ga、 In 、 Li、 Na、 Cd、 Mg、 Si、 Ta、 Sb及び Znの少なくとも一つの元素を含む酸化物、窒 化物または酸ィ匕窒化物等の一種単独又は二種以上の組み合わせが挙げられる。ま た、電子輸送層を構成する無機化合物が、微結晶又は非晶質の絶縁性薄膜である ことが好ましい。電子輸送層がこれらの絶縁性薄膜で構成されていれば、より均質な 薄膜が形成されるために、ダークスポット等の画素欠陥を減少させることができる。な お、このような無機化合物としては、上述したアルカリ金属カルコゲ -ド、アルカリ土類 金属カルコゲニド、アルカリ金属のハロゲン化物およびアルカリ土類金属のハロゲン 化物等が挙げられる。

オン化する。好ましい還元性ドーパントとしては、アルカリ金属、アルカリ土類金属の 酸化物、アルカリ土類金属、希土類金属、アルカリ金属の酸化物、アルカリ金属のハ ロゲン化物、アルカリ土類金属のハロゲンィ匕物、希土類金属の酸化物または希土類 金属のハロゲン化物、アルカリ金属錯体、アルカリ土類金属錯体、希土類金属錯体 の群力 選ばれる少なくとも一つの化合物である。より具体的に、好ましい還元性ド 一パントとしては、 Na (仕事関数: 2. 36eV)、K (仕事関数: 2. 28eV)、Rb (仕事関 数: 2. 16eV)及び Cs (仕事関数: 1. 95eV)からなる群力も選択される少なくとも一 つのアルカリ金属や、 Ca (仕事関数: 2. 9eV)、 Sr (仕事関数: 2. 0〜2. 5eV)及び Ba (仕事関数: 2. 52eV)力 なる群力 選択される少なくとも一つのアルカリ土類金 属が挙げられ、仕事関数が 2. 9eVのものが特に好ましい。これらのうち、より好ましい 還元性ドーパントは、 K、 Rb及び Csからなる群から選択される少なくとも一つのアル カリ金属であり、さらに好ましくは、 Rb又は Csであり、最も好ましくは、 Csである。これ らのアルカリ金属は、特に還元能力が高ぐ電子注入域への比較的少量の添加によ り、有機 EL素子における発光輝度の向上や長寿命化が図られる。

2 、 NaF等が挙 げられる。アルカリ金属錯体、アルカリ土類金属錯体、希土類金属錯体としては金属 イオンとしてアルカリ金属イオン、アルカリ土類金属イオン、希土類金属イオンの少な くとも一つ含有するものであれば特に限定はない。また配位子としては、例えば、キノ リノール、ベンゾキノリノール、アタリジノール、フエナントリジノール、ヒドロキシフエ二 ルォキサゾール、ヒドロキシフエ二ルチアゾール、ヒドロキシジァリールォキサジァゾ一 ル、ヒドロキシジァリールチアジアゾール、ヒドロキシフエ二ルビリジン、ヒドロキシフエ二 ルベンゾイミダゾール、ヒドロキシベンゾトリァゾール、ヒドロキシフルボラン、ビピリジル 、フエナント口リン、フタロシア-ン、ポルフィリン、シクロペンタジェン、 13ージケトン類 、ァゾメチン類、およびそれらの誘導体等が挙げられる力 これらに限定されるもので はない。

還元性ドーパントを含む電子注入'輸送層の形成手法としては、抵抗加熱蒸着法 により還元性ドーパントを蒸着しながら、界面領域を形成する発光材料または電子注 入材料である有機物を同時に蒸着させ、有機物中に還元性ドーパントを分散する方 法が好ましい。分散濃度としてはモル比として 100 : 1〜1: 100、好ましくは 5 : 1〜1: 5である。還元性ドーパントを層状に形成する際は、界面の有機層である発光材料ま たは電子注入材料を層状に形成した後に、還元性ドーパントを単独で抵抗加熱蒸着 法により蒸着し、好ましくは膜厚 0. 5ηπ!〜 15nmで形成する。還元性ドーパントを島 状に形成する際は、界面の有機層である発光材料又は電子注入材料を形成した後 に、還元性ドーパントを単独で抵抗加熱蒸着法により蒸着し、好ましくは膜厚 0. 05 〜: Lnmで形成する。
[0049] 本発明の有機 EL素子の発光層は、電界印加時に陽極又は正孔注入層より正孔を 注入することができ、陰極又は電子注入層より電子を注入することができる機能、注 入した電荷 (電子と正孔)を電界の力で移動させる機能、電子と正孔の再結合の場を 提供し、これを発光につなげる機能を有するものである。本発明の有機 EL素子の発 光層は、少なくとも本発明の金属錯体化合物を含有すると好ましぐこの金属錯体ィ匕 合物をゲスト材料とするホスト材料を含有させてもよい。前記ホスト材料としては、例え ば、力ルバゾール骨格を有するもの、ジァリールァミン骨格を有するもの、ピリジン骨 格を有するもの、ピラジン骨格を有するもの、トリァジン骨格を有するもの及びァリー ルシラン骨格を有するもの等が挙げられる。前記ホスト材料の T1 (最低三重項励起 状態のエネルギーレベル)は、ゲスト材料の T1レベルより大きいことが好ましい。前記 ホスト材料は低分子化合物であっても、高分子化合物であってもよい。また、前記ホ スト材料と前記金属錯体ィ匕合物等の発光材料とを共蒸着等することによって、前記 発光材料が前記ホスト材料にドープされた発光層を形成することができる。
[0050] 本発明の有機 EL素子において、前記各層の形成方法としては、特に限定されるも のではないが、真空蒸着法、 LB法、抵抗加熱蒸着法、電子ビーム法、スパッタリング 法、分子積層法、コーティング法 (スピンコート法、キャスト法、ディップコート法など)、 インクジェット法、印刷法などの種々の方法を利用することができ、本発明においては

また、本発明の金属錯体化合物を含有する有機薄膜層は、真空蒸着法、分子線蒸 着法 (MBE法)あるいは溶媒に解力した溶液のデイツビング法、スピンコーティング法 、キャスティング法、バーコート法、ロールコート法等の塗布法による公知の方法で形 成することができる。
塗布法で用いる溶媒としては、ジクロロメタン、ジクロロエタン、クロ口ホルム、四塩化 炭素、テトラクロロェタン、トリクロロェタン、クロ口ベンゼン、ジクロロベンゼン、クロロト ルェンなどのハロゲン系炭化水素系溶媒や、ジブチルエーテル、テトラヒドロフラン、 ジォキサン、ァ-ソールなどのエーテル系溶媒、メタノールやエタノール、プロパノー ノレ、ブタノーノレ、ペンタノ一ノレ、へキサノーノレ、シクロへキサノーノレ、メチノレセロソノレブ 、ェチルセ口ソルブ、エチレングリコールなどのアルコール系溶媒、ベンゼン、トルェ ン、キシレン、ェチルベンゼン、へキサン、オクタン、デカンなどの炭化水素系溶媒、 酢酸ェチル、酢酸ブチル、酢酸ァミルなどのエステル系溶媒等が挙げられる。なかで も、ハロゲン系炭化水素系溶媒や炭化水素系溶媒が好ましい。また、これらの溶媒は 単独で使用しても複数混合して用いてもょ ヽ。
前記コーティング法では、本発明の金属錯体化合物を溶媒に溶解して塗布液を調 製し、該塗布液を所望の層(あるいは電極)上に、塗布'乾燥することによって形成す ることができる。塗布液中には榭脂を含有させてもよぐ榭脂は溶媒に溶解状態とす ることも、分散状態とすることもできる。前記榭脂としては、非共役系高分子 (例えば、 ポリビニルカルバゾール)、共役系高分子 (例えば、ポリオレフイン系高分子)を使用 することができる。より具体的には、例えば、ポリ塩ィ匕ビニル、ポリカーボネート、ポリス チレン、ポリメチルメタタリレート、ポリブチルメタタリレート、ポリエステル、ポリスルホン 、ポリフエ-レンォキシド、ポリブタジエン、ポリ(N—ビュルカルバゾール)、炭化水素 榭脂、ケトン樹脂、フエノキシ榭脂、ポリアミド、ェチルセルロース、酢酸ビュル、 ABS 榭脂、ポリウレタン、メラミン榭脂、不飽和ポリエステル榭脂、アルキド榭脂、エポキシ 榭脂、シリコン榭脂等が挙げられる。
また、本発明の有機 EL素子の各有機層の膜厚は特に制限されないが、一般に膜 厚が薄すぎるとピンホール等の欠陥が生じやすぐ逆に厚すぎると高い印加電圧が
必要となり効率が悪くなるため、通常は数 nmから 1 μ mの範囲が好ましい。

ィ匕合物(a) 0. 21mmol(0. 20g)、 2—フエニノレピジジン 0. 525mmol(0. 081g)、 グリセリン 20mlを 100mlナス型フラスコに入れ、 650Wマイクロウエーブ照射装置( 四国計測社製 ZMW— 007型)にて、マイクロ波照射を 10分行い、加熱還流した。室 温まで放冷後、純水 50mlをカ卩え、生じた沈殿をろ過により回収し、へキサン、ジェチ ルエーテルにより洗浄後、塩化メチレンにより精製を行い、化合物(24)の黄色結晶 を 0. 05g得た (収率 31%)。

洗浄後の透明電極付きガラス基板を真空蒸着装置の基板ホルダーに装着し、まず 透明電極が形成されている側の面上に前記透明電極を覆うようにして膜厚 lOnmの 銅フタロシアニン膜 (CuPc膜)を成膜した。この CuPc膜は、正孔注入層として機能 する。続けて、 CuPc膜上に膜厚 30nmの下記 NPDを成膜した。この NPD膜は正孔 輸送層として機能する。さら〖こ、この膜上に膜厚 30nmの下記ホスト材料 (CBP)を蒸 着し発光層を成膜した。同時にりん光発光性の Ir金属錯体ドーパントとして金属錯体 化合物(25)を添加した。発光層中における化合物(25)の濃度は 6重量%とした。こ の発光層上に膜厚 lOnmで下記 BAlqを成膜した。この BAlq膜は正孔障壁層として 機能する。さら〖こ、この膜上に膜厚 30nmの下記 Alqを成膜した。この Alq膜は電子 注入層として機能する。この後、ハロゲン化アルカリ金属である LiFを 0. 15nmの厚さ に蒸着し、次いで、アルミニウムを 150nmの厚さに蒸着した。この AlZLiFは陰極と して機能する。このようにして有機 EL素子を作製した。
この素子について、電圧 7. 2Vで通電試験を行なったところ、緑色発光することが 確認された。

B A 1 q A 1 q 産業上の利用可能性
以上詳細に説明したように、本発明の金属錯体ィヒ合物を有機 EL素子用材料として 用いると、発光波長が短波長化されて青色発光が得られ、発光効率が高ぐ長寿命 の有機 EL素子を提供することができる。このため、各種表示素子、ディスプレイ、バッ クライト、照明光源、標識、看板、インテリア等の分野に適用でき、特にカラーディスプ レイの表示素子として適して 、る。

請求の範囲
3座キレート配位子を有する下記一般式(1)で表される金属錯体ィ匕合物。
(式中、実線は共有結合を、点線は配位結合を示す。
Mは、周期律表第 9族のいずれかの 3価の金属原子である。
〜 は、それぞれ独立に、置換基を有しても良い炭素数 5〜30の芳香族炭化水 素基、置換基を有しても良い炭素数 2〜30の複素環基、又は周期律表第 14〜17族 のいずれかの原子を含有する基であり、 〜 はそれぞれ 2価、 L4は 1価、 L5〜L6は それぞれ 0価である。ただし、 Mと直接結合している L2中の元素は周期律表第 15族 原子である。
また、 L4と L5、 L5と L6は、それぞれ互いに結合して 2座キレート配位子を形成してい てちよい。 )
3座キレート配位子を有する下記一般式 (2)で表される金属錯体ィ匕合物。

また、 L1Qと LU、 L11と L12は、それぞれ互いに結合して 2座キレート配位子を形成して いてもよい。 )
