Definitions
- the invention relates to a seat assembly for an automotive vehicle. More particularly, the invention relates to a seat back frame including a side bolster frame frame having an energy absorbing member for controlling deformation of the seat back caused by a rear impact to an automotive vehicle.
- Automotive vehicles include one or more seat assemblies for supporting a seat occupant within a passenger compartment of the vehicle.
- the seat assemblies include a generally horizontal seat cushion spaced above the floor of the vehicle and a generally vertical or upright seat back.
- the seat back is commonly operatively coupled to the seat cushion by a recliner mechanism for providing selective pivotal adjustment of the seat back relative to the seat cushion between a plurality of reclined seating positions.
- a seat back frame disposed within the seat back provides a rigid support for the seat back.
- the seat back often includes side bolster frame frames or side support structures for laterally supporting the seat occupant. Such side bolster frame frames are particularly useful in supporting the seat occupant during lateral accelerations of the vehicle.
- FIG. 1 illustrates a seat assembly 100 with a conventional seat back frame 102 which is collapsed or rearwardly deformed due to a rear impact.
- a seat assembly for an automotive vehicle includes a seat cushion and a seat back for supporting a seat occupant.
- the seat back includes a seat back frame having a pair of spaced apart side members.
- a side bolster frame is coupled to each one of the side members for supporting the seat occupant during lateral accelerations of the automotive vehicle.
- An energy absorbing member is coupled between each side bolster frame and the seat back frame for absorbing energy exerted upon the seat back frame in a rear impact to the automotive vehicle thereby controlling deformation of the seat back frame.
- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a seat assembly including a conventional seat back frame collapsed due to a rear impact;
- Figure 2 is a perspective view of a seat assembly including a seat back frame having an energy absorbing member according to the invention.
- Figure 3 is a perspective view of the seat back frame having the energy absorbing member disposed between a side bolster frame and the seat back frame.
- a seat assembly for an automotive vehicle is generally shown at 10.
- the seat assembly 10 includes a generally horizontal seat cushion 12 for supporting a seat occupant above a floor in the vehicle.
- the seat assembly 10 also includes a generally upright seat back 14 for supporting a back of the seat occupant.
- the seat back 14 is pivotally coupled to the seat cushion 12 by a pair of recliner mechanisms 16, which are well known to those skilled in the art.
- the recliner mechanisms 16 allow for selective angular adjustment of the seat back 14 relative to the seat cushion 12 between a plurality of reclined seating positions.
- a seat back frame rigidly supports the seat back 14.
- the seat back frame 18 includes a pair of spaced apart and generally parallel side members 20, 22.
- the seat back frame 18 also includes an upper cross member 24 extending between the side members 20, 22 and a lower cross member 26 spaced apart from the upper cross member- 24 and extending between the side members 20, 22.
- a pair of seat back brackets 28 is fixedly secured to a lower end 30 of each of the side members 20, 22.
- the recliner mechanisms 16 are operatively coupled between the seat back brackets 28 and a pair of seat cushion brackets 32 for pivotally supporting the seat back 14.
- a side bolster frame or side support structure 34 is coupled to each side member 20, 22 of the seat back frame 18 for supporting the seat occupant during lateral accelerations of the automotive vehicle.
- the side bolster frames 34 are formed from a metal wire.
- Each of the side bolster frames 34 include an upper end 36 fixedly secured to one of the side members 20, 22 and a lower end 38 fixedly secured to the respective seat back bracket 28.
- the upper 36 and lower 38 ends of the side bolster frames 34 are fixedly secured to the side members 20, 22 and the seat back brackets 28 by welding, although it will be appreciated that any suitable method of attachment may be used without varying from the scope of the invention.
- the lower end 38 of each side bolster frame 34 is shown and described as being coupled to the seat back bracket 28, the lower end 38 may be coupled to any of numerous structures.
- An energy absorbing member is fixedly interconnected between each side member 20, 22 and the respective side bolster frame 34 for structurally reinforcing the seat back frame 18 and absorbing energy exerted on the seat back 14 during a rear impact to the automotive vehicle.
- the energy absorbing members 40 also provide a structural reinforcement for each side bolster frame 34.
- each of the energy absorbing members 40 is a serpentine-shaped, metal wire that sweeps in a vertical direction along the length of the side bolster frame 34 between a first end 42 fixedly secured to the side bolster frame 34 and a second end 44 fixedly secured to the respective seat back bracket 28.
- the energy absorbing member 40 includes a plurality of folds 46.
- Each of the plurality of folds 46 is fixedly secured by welding to either the side bolster frame 34, the side member 20, 22, or the seat back bracket 28.
- the seat back 14 is subject to a sufficient load from the seat occupant, one or more of the plurality of folds 46 of the energy absorbing member 40 will plastically deform to absorb the impact energy and control rearward deformation of the seat back frame 18.
- the seat occupant creates a reactionary rearward force F, shown in Figure 2, directed against the seat back 14.
- the seat back 14 is designed to rearwardly bend or deflect, while remaining generally upright, in order to absorb the impact force energy.
- the seat back frame 18 may include a hinge point along each side member 20, 22 or each seat back bracket 28 to promote such seat back bending or deflection.
- the location of the hinge point is within the area bounded by the upper 36 and lower 38 ends of the side bolster frame 34.
- the energy absorbing member 40 assists in such energy absorption by creating a resistance to bending so that seat deformation is controlled in response to the rear impact.
- the energy absorbing members 40 are continuously deformed and stretched as the seat back 14 deflects or deforms to absorb the impact force energy.
- the particular shape, size, and configuration of the energy absorbing member 40 may vary so that the energy absorbing member 40 may be tuned or set to meet specific energy absorption needs of different seat assemblies.
- the thickness of the metal wire may vary or the metal wire may be hollow.
