Definitions
- the present invention relates to a device for the withdrawal, collection and transport of specimens for diagnostic analyses, for example urine.
- the system generally in use is the withdrawal of a specimen from the collection bottle by means of a pipette, with which the measured specimen is transferred into a test tube normally containing a urinary tract bacterial colony overgrowth inhibitor, or a bacteriostat (for example boric acid).
- a pipette normally containing a urinary tract bacterial colony overgrowth inhibitor, or a bacteriostat (for example boric acid).
- the test tube is closed with a cap and sent for analysis. This can be carried out immediately or within a maximum time period of generally a few hours if the specimen is stored in the refrigerator.
- the analysis is usually continued by either withdrawing from the test tube a pre-established quantity of specimen or immersing a rod terminating with a loop into the test tube containing the specimen, which provides for the collection of a minimum quantity of specimen and its transfer for example onto a petri dish for bacterial inoculation.
- the present invention proposes a device for the withdrawal, collection and transport of specimens for diagnostic analyses characterised by comprising a test tube equipped with a cap and bounded by a wall which, under a sufficient externally applied pressure, is yieldable at least within a portion, either by the effect of one or more longitudinal grooves along which the thickness of said portion of said wall is reduced, or by the effect that the thickness of the whole of said portion of said wall is reduced.
- said test tube is equipped with a cap from which there extends into said test tube a rod terminating with a spongy material for collecting the specimen, said test tube being traversed by said grooves at least in the area facing said spongy material, to be hence yieldable under a sufficient externally applied pressure to allow compression and squeezing of the specimen from said spongy material positioned within said test tube.
- Figure 1 shows an elevated front view of a test tube of the device of the invention.
- Figure 2 shows a longitudinal cross-section of the device of figure 1 comprising test tube, cap and rod.
- Figure 3 shows a cross-section of the device in fig. 2 on the line Ill-Ill.
- Figure 4 shows a cross-section of another embodiment of the device of the invention.
- test tube 11 of the invention as shown in fig. 1 is constructed for example of a substantially soft plastic material, being, at least in that wall portion 19 which in the device of fig. 2 faces said spongy material 18, yieldable under a sufficient externally applied pressure, for example by an operator's fingers, to allow the specimen to be compressed and squeezed from said spongy material when this latter is positioned within the test tube.
- said wall portion 19 is traversed by many longitudinal grooves 22 along which the thickness of said portion of said wall is reduced, so as to offer less resistance to compression.
- a foot 23 gives the lower end of the test tube sufficient rigidity to enable it to vertically rest on the work surface.
- a device 10 for the withdrawal, collection and transport of specimens for urine analysis consists of a test tube 11 equipped upperly with a cap 12 from which a rod 13 rigidly extends into said test tube.
- said cap is screwable onto the upper end of the test tube by the effect of a thread 14, while in its interior a seat 15 is centrally cut, suitable for stably receiving by interference a thickened head 16 of the rod 13.
- the rod is arranged, in the middle section, with downward facing divergent fins or hooks 17, and at the lower end with a disc 21 , the function of the fins and disc being to stably hold a cylinder of spongy material 18 for collecting the specimen.
- the rod 13 has a shorter length than the test tube 11 so as to leave a free space 20 between the base of this latter and the spongy material 18.
- the rod is arranged with divergent fins or hooks 17 capable of stably holding a cylinder of spongy material 18 for collecting the specimen. This is for example in the form of a polyurethane sponge capable of absorbing liquids.
- the spongy material can preferably be provided, for example saturated, with an appropriate quantity of a suitable bacteriostat.
- the rod 13 has a shorter length than the test tube 11 so as to leave a free space 20 between the base of this latter and the spongy material 18.
- the test tube is constructed for example of a substantially soft plastic material being, at least in that wall portion 19 facing said spongy material, yieldable under sufficient externally applied pressure, for example by an operator's fingers, as to enable the specimen to be compressed and squeezed from said spongy material when this latter is positioned inside the test tube.
- the whole of said wall portion 19 is thinner than the remaining thickness of the test tube, so as to ease said compression.
- the device of the invention is supplied to the users in a sterile pack within which it is arranged in the rest position shown for example in figure 2.
- the operation of the device shown in the example is the following: the operator who is to undertake the withdrawal of a urine specimen from a collection bottle opens a pack, grips the device arranged in the position shown for instance in figure 2, unscrews the cap 12 and immerses into the flask of urine the rod 13 bearing the spongy material 18 which rapidly absorbs a volume of liquid equal to its capacity. This done, the rod bearing the absorbed specimen is re-inserted into the test tube and the cap is screwed back on for hermetic closure.
- test tube is ready to be sent to analysis, either directly or after proper refrigerated storage.
- the analyst can proceed either manually with a single device or with many devices in an automated multiple plate system.
- the analyst proceeds in both cases by moderately pressing on the lower part of the closed test tube, at that wall portion 19 facing said spongy material 18 saturated with the specimen.
- This can be achieved either by the analyst on a single test tube using finger pressure or by the automated equipment using suitable means for mechanical compression or the like.
- This compression achieves the effect of squeezing almost completely a known quantity of specimen from the saturated spongy material 18, which in this manner fills the base of the test tube 11 in the free space 20 left available by the immersion of the rod 13.
- the analyst can thus proceed, after opening the test tube and removing the cap with rod, to the collection of a known quantity of specimen by pipette for sending to analysis.
- a suitable absorbent material for example a layer of spongy or hydrophilic material can be deposited on the end of said rod by flocking, a method which allows the amount of absorbent material to be measured with greater precision, thus its absorption capacity is also measured with equal precision.
- This technique is described in patent WO2004/86979 by the same Applicant. In this case, as the flocked coating is considerably thinner than a sponge swab, such as 18 of fig.
- the yieldability of the wall portion 19 to pressure is such as to allow, in a similar manner to the squeezing action in the case of the sponge, a protracted squeezing action of the flocked layer, which in jargon is defined as massage, until the absorbed specimen is completely extracted thereof.
- a protracted squeezing action of the flocked layer which in jargon is defined as massage, until the absorbed specimen is completely extracted thereof.
- the device of the invention allows the collection, storage and transport of the specimen to be analysed by using a single means from the moment of withdrawal to the moment of analysis.
- the device of the invention performs the functions both of a pipette for withdrawing the specimen from the bottle, for example urine, and of a test tube for preserving the specimen and its transport to the analysis. Among other things the risk of liquid spilling on withdrawal from the original bottle is hence avoided.
- the spongy material is also shown to enable the absorption of a virtually constant volume of specimen, therefore avoiding the drawback of mutual dose variation between specimen and bacteriostat, and hence instability of the specimen, typical of the prior art.
- the specimen is completely absorbed by the spongy material, there will be no free liquid in the device during preservation and transport, with risk of its spillage and contamination on the exterior being consequently reduced.
- Further advantages of the invention are the possibility of its being applied to an automated analysis system, as well as the possibility of introducing a bacteriostat into the spongy material directly during its manufacturing stage, for example in the foaming stage of the polyurethane material.
