Definitions
- the present invention relates to an arterial filter.
- Background Art It is known that in extracorporeal circuits through which the blood of the patient flows during heart surgery, a filter is provided which is known as arterial filter because it is inserted along the arterial line of the circuits in order to remove microemboli substantially constituted by solid particulate, such as platelet aggregates, and air microbubbles.
- the filtration mass comprised within the filter may become clogged due to an excess of solid particulate, with the consequence of an abnormal difference in blood pressure between the inlet and the outlet of the filter, thereby determining unfavorable functional conditions.
- the pump that circulates the blood in the extracorporeal circuit is in fact capable of ensuring the necessary flow, but does so at an excessively high delivery pressure, which damages the blood, and if vice versa such pressure is to be kept at a correct value, the flow decreases unacceptably below the minimum values required.
- an arterial filter which has a bypass which ensures a low priming value and a reduced cost and further entails extremely reduced space occupation.
- an arterial filter according to the invention comprising an outer enclosure for containing a filtration mass which divides the space delimited by said enclosure into a first portion, which is connected to a blood intake connector, and a second portion, which is connected to a blood discharge connector, characterized in that it comprises a bypass line which is connected, at its ends, to two connectors which branch out from the outer enclosure respectively at the first and second portions of space delimited by the filtration mass within said enclosure, said line being provided with means which are adapted to selectively open and close said line.
- Figure 1 is a general view of the filter
- Figures 2 and 3 are sectional views of the filter with the bypass line respectively closed and open. Ways of carrying out the Invention
- the reference numeral 1 generally designates the arterial filter, which comprises an outer enclosure 2 for containing a filtration mass 3, which divides the space delimited by said enclosure into two portions: a first portion 4, which is connected to a blood intake connector 4a, and a second portion 5, which is connected to a blood discharge connector 5 a.
- An important feature of the arterial filter according to the invention consists in the presence of a bypass line 6, which is connected, at one end, to a connector 4b, which protrudes from the enclosure 2 at the first portion of space 4 and, at the other end, to a connector 5b, which protrudes from the enclosure 2 at the second portion of space 5.
- the bypass line 6 is made of soft material and can be easily blocked by means of clamping forceps 7.
- connectors 4a, 5a respectively for blood intake and blood discharge, it should be noted that they have substantially parallel directions and opposite orientations in order to ensure the possibility to provide a particularly simple arterial line to which said connectors are connected.
- connectors 4b, 5b are arranged very close to each other so as to determine, with a very short bypass line, a low value of the filling volume.
- the arrows that indicate the direction of the flow of blood through the filter in Figures 2 and 3 clearly explain the operation of the arterial filter of the invention.
- bypass line with corresponding blockage means can be provided in any manner
- the connectors for the inflow and outflow of the blood in the filter also may assume a configuration other than the one described, but always complying with the condition of allowing a particularly simple execution of the arterial line.
