Definitions

  • This invention relates to a fall prevention device aimed at preventing an elevator counterweight to fall if its suspension elements break and to an elevator counterweight equipped therewith.
  • Some elevator counterweights specially in elevators installed in buildings with underground car parks, are provided with a safety device preventing them to accidentally fall within the building structure.
  • This safety device is a speed limiter with an upper control pulley and a lower tensioning pulley mounted laterally in the elevator shaft, with a cable wrapped over said pulleys and attached to the counterweight.
  • Such a speed limiting system requires a considerable side space in the elevator shaft, which is hardly compatible with modern elevators with small shafts, and requires a long mounting time.
  • This invention aims at correcting these disadvantages and proposes a safety device for elevator counterweight comprising a framework with an upper crossbeam and a parachute device on its rail guides, wherein the upper crossbeam contains a suspension sheave block connected to the counterweight hanging cables or belts, wherein the device is characterized in that it uses a mechanism connected to the counterweight parachute device and to the counterweight suspension sheave block and integrated into the upper crossbeam of the counterweight frame, said mechanism being controlled to actuate said counterweight parachute device according to the axis pressure or suspension force of the axes of said pulleys in order to arrest the counterweight below a set pressure or suspension force threshold corresponding to a slackening or rupture of the counterweight suspension cables or belts.
  • the safety device operates according to the suspension force of the pulley axis in the counterweight suspension sheave block, wherein said pulley axis is mounted to move in vertical translation over a short distance on the sheave block and to be returned downwards by spring means countering the suspension force, between an upper position in normal service and a lower incident position, said mechanism being also connected to said pulley axis so that the downward travel of the pulley axis under its own weight and under the action of the spring means at an abnormal suspension force controls the mechanism to actuate the counterweight parachute device and arrest the counterweight.
  • the spring means are set so that the sum of the downward spring thrust and the pulley axis weight is lower than the upward suspension force of the suspension elements exerted on the counterweight pulley axis, and is noticeably higher than the latter in case of slackening or rupture of the suspension elements, so as to control a fast displacement of the pulley axis and therefore of the counterweight parachute device in case of a malfunction of the suspension elements (belts or cables).
  • Said pulley axis can be mounted integral with a trolley element mounted to slide vertically on the sheave block between said upper normal service position and said lower incident position.
  • the pulley axis can be mounted to slide directly on the sheave block with its ends in two corresponding opposite elongated openings in the sheave block.
  • Said mechanism is a simple rod linkage type motion return mechanism arranged inside the upper counterweight cross-beam and converting the vertical displacement of the pulley axis or of the trolley into a control motion to actuate the counterweight parachute device.
  • the invention also relates to a counterweight provided with a safety device as described above.

  • These rods 27 each accommodate in their upper part a helical spring 31 applied in tension against said upper flat 29 and against the base of the plastic block 25, thus pushing the block 25 back downwards until the axis abuts on the lower end of the elongated openings 21.

  • This protruding element 35 rests against the end of a lever 37 of a cross-bar 39, which is mounted at the lower part of the upper crossbeam 9 of the counterweight frame, between the sheave block 1 1 and the guide rail 7, on either side of the sheave block.
  • This bar 39 controls the actuation of the parachute device 3 when its lever 37 is turned downwards ( Figure 5).
  • it is mounted so that its lever 37 is returned upwards against said protruding element 35 of the key part, e.g. by a spring element 41 mounted appropriately on the parachute device.

  • the two side bars 39 controlling the parachute devices on the guide rails 7 may be replaced by one bar arranged transversally between the parachute devices (not represented) and actuated by either one of the sliding blocks 25 of the sheave block.
