Definitions
- the present invention relates to an electrical cage contact, comprising a tubular body delimited by walls, and a contact part which is attached to the inside of said tubular body, the body having an edge which forms a shoulder, intended to cooperate with a second shoulder formed by the end of a part of a cell of an insulating connector housing, and thus ensuring the blocking of the contact in the direction of withdrawal of the cell .
- Such contacts which are intended to be blocked in a corresponding cell of an insulating housing by means for example of an elastic latch molded with the housing, generally have a rigid body. While an important trend in the field of electrical connectors consists in miniaturization, this is limited in particular by the necessary deflection in bending of the latches and by their thickness.
- a contact of the aforementioned type comprises, on a front section of the body, a notch formed in one of the walls, adapted to allow a flexural deformation of the body during the insertion of the contact in the socket.
- the invention may further comprise one or more of the following characteristics: the body is of generally cylindrical shape with rectangular section, having two opposite side walls, as well as a floor wall and a ceiling wall, the notch being formed in a side wall, while the contact portion projects from the ceiling wall; - The contact part is connected to the ceiling wall at a rear section of the body; - The notch extends essentially axially; - 1 notch is open on the front side; - 1 notch extends over a section of length less than half the length of the body; - The body is made from a metal blank by folding, and closed at a junction line of two opposite edges of the metal blank, and the junction is made on the side opposite the notch with a clearance allowing a flexion deformation of the body; the junction line extends essentially axially; the electrical contact comprises, on a front section of the body, a second notch, formed in the wall opposite to the wall in which the first notch is formed, and preferably substantially symmetrical with said first notch; - The electrical
- the invention also relates to an electrical connector part, comprising an insulating housing, having at least one cell and at least one associated latch for blocking a contact in said cell, and at least one contact as described above, engaged in said cell and blocked inside thereof by cooperation of the pawl with the rear shoulder of the body.
- FIGS. 1 and 2 are perspective views, in two different directions, of a contact according to l invention
- - Figure 3 is a sectional view, in a longitudinal median plane, of the contact of Figure 1, in the direction 3-3
- - Figure 4 is a side view, in direction 3-3, of the contact of Figure 1
- - Figures 5 and 6 are schematic sectional views, in a longitudinal median plane, of a cell adapted to receive and block a contact as illustrated in the previous Figures, the contact being shown in side view (not cut), respectively in the partial engagement position and in the full engagement position.
- FIGS 1 to 4 there is shown a female electrical contact 1 according to the invention, crimped to the end of an electrical cable 3.
- This contact 1 is intended to be housed and fixed in a cell of an insulating electrical connector box.
- the Figures are oriented along a system of axes X, Y, Z orthogonal, in which: - the axis X is the longitudinal axis of the contact, assumed to be oriented from back to front, corresponding to the direction of insertion of the contact into its socket and to the direction of mutual engagement of contact 1 with a complementary male contact; the Y axis is the transverse axis, assumed to be horizontal; and - the Z axis is the supposed vertical axis, oriented from bottom to top.
- axial will be understood to mean an orientation in the direction of the axis X, this axis also defining the main direction of the cable 3, in the end region of connection to contact 1.
- Contact 1 has a crimping section 5 on the end of the cable 3, and a contact section 7, designed to receive a pin or a tongue of a complementary male contact.
- the invention is not limited to a contact of the crimp type, as shown in the
- the female electrical contact 1 illustrated in the Figures is of the “cage” type, having regard to the fact that the contact section 7 comprises a hollow tubular body 9, designed in particular to ensure the fixing of the contact in its socket.
- the body 9 has for this purpose a rear edge 11 forming a shoulder intended to cooperate with a retaining latch provided in one cell.
- the tubular body 9 is of generally cylindrical shape with an axis X, with a rectangular base.
- the body 9 internally forms a conduit for receiving the complementary male contact member, along the longitudinal axis X.
- the tubular body 9 is delimited by four essentially planar and rectangular walls, namely two side walls 13, 14, one wall floor 15, and a ceiling wall 16.
- the side walls 13, 14 on the one hand, and the floor walls 15 and ceiling 16 on the other hand, are opposite and parallel two by two.
- the contact section 7 further comprises, folded back inside the body 9, in the conduit, a contact part in the form of an elastic blade 21.
- the contact blade 21 extends essentially axially to the inside the body 9, with a curve 23 of convexity facing the floor wall 15.
- the contact blade 21 projects into the body 9 from the ceiling wall 16, being connected to the latter by means of a side tab 25 folded transversely towards the inside of the body 9, on the rear side of the latter.
- the blade 21 has a free end 27 on the front side of the body.
- the body 9 is designed to receive the complementary male contact member between the blade 21 and the floor wall 15, the curve 23 constituting an active part intended to come into pressure on this male member, and thus define a privileged passage region current between male contact and female contact.
- the floor wall 15 is formed with a relief, in this case a double boss 31 opposite the curve 23, in order to improve the contact pressure.
- the body 9 is further provided with a protective strip 33 formed in axial projection from the ceiling wall 16 from its front edge, and curved inwards, so that its free end defines a support for the free end. 27 of blade 21 ( Figure 3). The primary function of this protective strip 33 is to prevent the introduction of a male member between the strip 21 and the ceiling wall 16.
- the contact strip 21 is bent under pre-stress, slightly separating the latter from the floor wall 15, so as to reduce the force necessary for the insertion of the male contact member into the female contact 1.
- the body 9 is formed laterally with a relief 37, obtained for example by stamping on a part of the side wall 14.
- the relief 37 protrudes laterally towards the outside of the body, and ensures the polarization of the contact in the socket, so that the contact cannot be fully engaged and locked in the socket only in its correct operating orientation.
- the metal blank thus obtained is folded so as to give the body 9 its closed tubular configuration.
- the body is closed by joining two opposite edges of the metal blank along a line 41.
- an interlocking is made, at this junction line 41, with a tab 43 issuing from the side wall 13 in a corresponding notch in the ceiling wall 16.
- a substantially axial notch 47 is formed, which extends from the front edge of the wall 14 on a front section of the body 9
- the length L of the notch or slot 47 in the example shown, is less than half the total length L 0 of the body 9, this length L 0 can be defined as the distance between the rear edge 11 forming a shoulder and the most forward part of the contact.
- the notch 47 is open on the side of the front edge of the side wall 13.
- the notch 47 is provided so that the body 9 is slightly deformable in compression along the vertical axis Z, on a front section of the body.
- the notch 47 is provided to allow, on the front side, a bending of the ceiling wall 16 relative to the floor wall 15, so that these walls can be brought together at the front by bending elastic. More precisely, it will be noted that the notch 47 extends in a rectilinear, axial manner, and halfway up the wall 14.
- the notch 47 has width 1 of the same order that the clearance j_ formed at the junction line 41, preferably substantially equal.
- FIGs 5 and 6 we will better perceive the behavior of the contact 1 described above, when it is inserted into an insulating housing of an electrical connector, provided for the reception of such a contact.
- FIGs there is shown diagrammatically in section, in an axial vertical plane, the shape of such a cell, as well as the contact described above in successive phases of engagement in the cell: in Figure 5, the contact is shown in a partial engagement phase, while in Figure 5, the contact is shown in its fully engaged position.
- FIGs there are shown lower 51 and upper 52 walls of an insulating connector housing, defining between them the cell 55 for receiving the contact.
- the cell 55 essentially comprises a cell inlet portion 57, an intermediate cell portion 58, and a front portion 59 for receiving the body 9 of the contact.
- the lower wall 51 is provided to cooperate with the floor wall 15 of the contact during its insertion.
- the housing which has been partially shown diagrammatically in FIGS. 5 and 6, comprises, for the cell 55, a latch 61 integral with the upper wall 52.
- This latch 61 extends essentially axially X by projecting towards the inside of the intermediate cell portion 58.
- the latch 61 is connected by its rear end to the upper wall 52, with which it is molded in one piece, by a junction region 62. It is also connected, on the side of its front end, at the upper wall 52 by two axial straps 63.
- the latch 61 is thus elastically deformable in bending, but of a high rigidity and of low clearance.
- the latch 61 On the side of its front end, the latch 61 has an edge 65 complementary to the shoulder 11, formed by the rear edge of the body 9 of the contact.
- the junction region 62 to the upper wall 52 defines a tightening of the cell, and thus a hard point of passage of the contact during its insertion.
- FIG. 5 the fact has been illustrated that when the body 9 passes through the intermediate portion of the cell 58, and this from the passage of the hard point 62, the body 9 deforms at the front in bending (or in compression) under the effect of the latch 61.
- FIG. 6 shows the contact in its fully engaged position, in which it is locked in the operating position inside the cell 55, after elastic return of the pawl 61 in its stable rest position, wherein the front edge 65 of the pawl cooperates with the rear edge 11 of the contact, opposing its withdrawal towards the rear.
- the body 9 of the contact resumes, in this position, its non-deformed configuration, by elastic return of the constituent walls of the body to their nominal position.
- the invention is suitable for any type of attachment member operating with an elastic deformation, however slight it is, which is illustrated here by a bar provided with a hook and deformable in bending, and which has been designated by the term "latch". Also, this term will generally be understood to mean any part of the cell wall or of any member connected to a cell wall, engaging the contact inside the latter and operating by elastic deformation.
- the connection 25 of the contact blade 21 to the ceiling wall 16 is located on the rear side of the body 9, the elasticity given by the notch 47 at the front of the body does not does not harm the contact pressure of the contact blade 21 on the complementary male member.
- the contact blade 21 is connected to a rigid part of the body which is not influenced by the elastic bending deformations of the front part.
- the body 9 has a second notch similar to one notch 47, formed in the wall 13.
- such a second notch is symmetrical with the first 47, of so as to ensure a symmetrical bending deformation of the body 9 during the insertion of the contact into the socket.
- the flexural deformation capacity of the body being obtained by the two
- the junction 41 can be provided without play, preferably on the ceiling wall 16.
- the opposite edges defining the junction line 41 can then be advantageously welded, or stapled.
