- This invention relates to a procedure concerning dewatering of suspensions, in particular, suspensions with a relatively low concentration of organic matter.
- the dewatering is performed with the aid of known dewatering apparatus. Simultaneously as thickening occurs the suspension is mixed with materials that are able to increase the dry solid content.
- Patent SE 9704653-6 recommends the addition of sawdust and bark with the intention to "crush” cells, to form channels and to "reinforce” the sludge.
- Swedish patent 0200217-8 a procedure is described which results in high solid contents by mechanical dewatering. By aid of this procedure dry content levels in sludge exceed 50 %.
- the material is mixed with one or more additives in particle form in which the content of fine materials, defined by their passing a pulp strainer (screen) with a diameter of 2 mm or corresponding screen width, achieves at least 40 weight-% of the total weight of additives.
- a drawback with many apparatuses are that they expose the material to a substantial compression, which can damage the material and parts of the machine equipment.
- high levels of mechanical pressure damage wires, press felts and the like. Increasing wear and tear can result in breakage of the wire or felt. Press rolls can also be damaged.
- more energy is required for each increase in the working pressure.
- a higher energy consumption results in a negative effect on the natural environment, because electrical energy is usually needed, which in turn is generated through the combustion of fossil fuels and the like, which among other things results in carbon dioxide emissions.
- the suspension, to be dewatered is mixed together with a solid matter (henceforth named agent) in particle form.
- agents are comprised of polymers and the like, for example polyurethane with low density or with a volume density much lower than 1 kg/dm .
- Polyurethane is a composite of carbamide acid esters (general formula RO.CO.NH ). This type of ethyl ester is usually named urethane, and such urethane can be recycled from used insulation from for example old freezers and refrigerators.

- the agent must be shredded and ground to relatively small particles, if possible before sifting by means of separating (straining) for concentration of the agent's fine particles.
- the desired particle size of the agent is best achieved through straining in one or more stages.
- straining devices can be used, as for example a shaking sieve, a vibration sieve or a so called air separator.
- the agents weight ratio can vary within a large interval. From an economical point of view however the lowest possible ratio of agent is preferable. However to achieve an effect a weight ratio of at least 5 % and preferably more then 10 weight-% is required. In some cases it can be advantageous to produce briquettes, granulates or pellets after thickening. Here, the method that is used in patent SE 9904313-5 among others can be utilised.
- An essential and distinguishing feature of the invention is that the mixing of the above described agents occurs in an integrated step at the same time as thickening occurs.
- This refers to the thickening of liquids, which have a relatively low concentration content of matter, as for example sludge.
- the aim is to thicken suspensions with concentrations of solid matter, which lie between 0.5 % and 15 %.
- the integrated combination of the mixing and the thickening procedures can be carried out by using known devices.
- the screw water extractor with a core or a water extractor without a core which transfers liquid and matter with the aid of a spiral
- a tube surrounds the screw or the spiral with openings on its envelope surface.
- the envelope surface's outside or inside can be covered with a wire of plastic or steel.
- Further alternatives constitute dewatering devices with rotating paddles or pins connected to a central axel.
- Sludge containing fibres in suspension form from a paper mill's biological refining treatment was transferred, as in the example with prior art, to a screw water extractor whose envelope surface had holes with a diameter of 0.2 mm.
- sawdust was added from a sawmill.
- the sawdust was a separation of strained sawdust.
- the strained sawdust had a weight ratio of 64 % fine screening, which per definition passed a sieve with a hole diameter of 2 mm.
- the sawdust had a dry content of 43 %.
