Definitions
- a vending machine including a security enclosure
- the present invention relates to a vending machine including a security enclosure.
- Vending machines disperse a range of consumer products and are constructed in numerous configurations.
- the vending machines allow a retailer to offer their products for sale to the public without the need for a shop front or sales personnel.
- Vending machines provide the public with a convenient way in which to purchase consumer products.
- Vending machines can be found in various locations where people congregate and are often found where people do not have access to a retail store because of their location or because of the time of day. Vending machines are frequently used at bus stations and other transport temrinals where people gather. These transport terminals are often located a distance from retail shops and therefore vending machines provide the public with the ability to purchase food and beverages at any time of the day or night. Further they may also dispense other consumable products such as personal toiletries but to name a few.
- vending machines that dispense food and beverages are by far the most popular and are found throughout suburban and regional areas.
- One of the problems with vending machines is that they are often located in places that are out of sight from the public eye for extended periods of times.
- An example of one such location is , a bus terminal where people are not present in the early hours of the morning when buses are no longer operating.
- the isolation of many vending machines exposes them to vandalism. People attempting to steal goods or money from the vending machine carry much of this vandalism. In addition some people may wish to damage vending machines just because they are there. It is essential to have an interface between the customer and the vending machine. This usually includes a slot for accepting money and dispensing change and a larger aperture for dispensing the goods that have been purchased.
- Some vending machines also include a viewing window used to advertise the goods on offer. Vandals trying to access the interior of the vending machine target these areas. Vending machines are seen as a soft target and most vandals are often not caught. Consequently, many vending machines are fitted with various security devices.
- a vending machine including: a security enclosure having an open front; a capsule rotatably mounted within said security enclosure, said capsule incorporating a non-vulnerable surface configured to restrict access to the interior of said capsule and an interface surface configured to allow an individual to interact with said vending machine through said open front to thereby obtain merchandise upon payment; and a turning device configured to rotate said capsule within said security enclosure so that the interface surface is rotated away from said open front and replaced by said non-vulnerable surface.
- non-vulnerable surface means a surface that will resist normal vandalism attempts. Of course, any surface may be damaged or broken with the use of appropriate equipment. Thus the present invention does not claim a surface that is impenetrable but rather one that can resist normal vandalism.
- said security enclosure is constructed.from a material with non- deforming properties.
- said security enclosure is constructed from steel.
- said security enclosure includes a rear, two parallel and adjacent sides at substantially 90° to said rear, a top and a base.
- said capsule is configured to contain merchandise.
- said capsule is rotatable between a first position wherein said interface surface is accessible and a second position wherein said interface surface is housed within said security enclosure and said non-vulnerable surface is visible.
- said capsule is a cylinder including a substantially planar circular top, a parallel substantially planar circular base and a curved side extending therein between, said curved side including a non-vulnerable surface and an interface surface.
- said cylinder rotates around a vertical axis of rotation, said axis of rotation intersects the centre of the circle of said top and the centre of the circle of said base.
- said turning device includes an electric motor.
- other types of motors may be used such as hydraulic ones.
- a programmable timer controls said turning device.
- Preferably said timer can be programmed to activate motor at a predetermined time thereby rotating capsule.

- second position 44 the non- vulnerable surface 28 is exposed.
- Sides 20 and 22 of the security enclosure 12 align with the edges of the non-vulnerable surface 28. This arrangement creates a continuous impervious surface that is tamper resistant, thereby providing a secured vending machine unit 10 as illustrated in Figure 2.
- the security enclosure 1 and the non-vulnerable surface 14 can be . constructed from any material that is difficult to pierce. A non-deformable material like steel could be used however any material that ensures the integrity of the vending machine 10 could be utilised. The merchandise 36 and money is thereby secured within the vending machine 10 at times of high vandalism risk.
- the turning device 16 as illustrated in Figure 3 is configured to rotate the capsule 14 around the central axis of rotation 46.
- the turning device 16 includes a belt 48, a pulley 50 and a wheel 52.
- the pulley 50 is power- driven by a motor (not illustrated) and incorporates a timer 54.
- the timer 54 can be programmed so that the capsule 14 is automatically rotated from a first position 42 to a second position 44 or conversely from a second 44 to a first 42 position.
- the vending machine 10 can thereby be configured in a secure position 44 during times when it is the most susceptible to vandalism, such as during the middle of the night. Conversely, the interface surface 14 is exposed during times when potential consumers are in the vicinity.
- the vending machine 10 is automatically rotated into a second position 44 by means of the turning device 16.
- the vending machine 10 can include a sensor 56, such as a motion detector, whi ⁇ h is configured to override the timer 54 and suspend the rotation of the capsule 14 if a person (not illustrated) is within close proximity to the vending machine 1 . This is to ensure that the person does not receive an injury during the rotation of the capsule 14. The rotation continues once the person has left the vicinity of the vending machine 10.

- Various sensors can be incorporated into the vending machine 10 including heat sensors, pressure activated sensors on the edges of the security enclosure 12 and motion sensors. However, the skilled addressee should understand that the present invention is not limited to the use of any particular sensors.
- Another area of potential weakness is the aperture through which an authorised person refills the merchandise.
- the cavity 56 containing the merchandise 36 is accessed in a manner that ensures the integrity of the non-vulnerable surface 28.
- the interface surface 26 is attached to the non-vulnerable surface 28 via hinge 58 and locked in position via locking means 60. This allows the merchandise 36 to be replenished by an authorised person without creating a potential weakness in the non-vulnerable surface 28 of the vending machine 10.
- access to the internal cavity 56 of the vending machine 10 could be in any manner providing that the integrity of the non-vulnerable surface 28 is maintained.
- the capsule 14 is located within the security enclosure 12 by means of shafts 62 and 64.
- Shafts 62 and 64 are positioned on the vertical axis of rotation 46 and are pivotally mounted within apertures 66 and 68.

- a motor could be used to drive a wheel that engages the side of the vending machine.
- motor 110 drives a wheel 112 that engages the outer surface of the vending machine 114.
- the wheel 112 could include an outer rubberised surface that is able to fiictionally engage the side of the vending machine.
- the configuration of the present invention increases the security of the vending machine 10 during time of high vandalism risk.
- the vulnerable areas of the vending machine such as the apertures for accepting money and dispensing merchandise, are shielded within the security enclosure during times when vandalism is likely to occur. Most thieves are opportunistic and the concealing of these vulnerable areas will act as a deterrent to theft and vandalism.
- the present invention which automatic rotates the capsule allows the vulnerable area of the vending machine to be secured within the security enclosure without someone physically locking down the apparatus. This offers significant advantages over presently available vending machines since it automatically secures the vulnerable areas of the vending machine at time of greatest vandalism risk.
- the vending machine may be also configured to operate to ensure that any damage to the machine is minimised. For example, if the vending machine had a door that could be left open by a user, the machine could be rotated in a first direction to ensure that the door is closed before being operated to rotate in fhe opposite direction to then secure the vending machine against vandalism. Other improvements could be the ability to control the rotation of the vending machine by remote access.
- the vending machine may be adapted to be in communication with a central base that would then be able to remotely shut down the vending machine. This may occur, for example, if there is a riot or public unrest in an area or if there is a fire in the premises. Further improvements to the vending machine would include an external access that would enable manual rotation of the capsule in case there was, for example, a power failure. Alternately the vending machine may include its own power source to rotate the capsule if there is indeed a mains power failure.
