Definitions
- the present invention describes a process and its use for the distillation of ionic liquids.
- Peter Wasserscheidt, Chemistry in Our Time 37 (2003) No. 1, pages 52-63 gives an overview of the use of ionic liquids for multiphase catalysis. It is mentioned as an advantage of ionic liquids when used as a solvent that evaporates due to the non-measurable low vapor pressure of the ionic liquid no solvent.
- Ionic liquids in the context of this invention are salts which are already in liquid state at low temperatures, preferably below 100 ° C.
- the object of the present invention is to develop a technically usable process for the purification of ionic liquids.
- alkylation is probably a positively charged alkyl radical, which is preferably bound to a heteroatom of the cation, on the anion.
- Heteroatoms are for example nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus or sulfur.
- Suitable alkyls here are C 1 -C 8 -alkyls, preferred alkyls are C 1 -C 10 -alkyls, more preferably C 1 -C 6 -alkyls, and very particularly preferably CH 3 + is the positively charged alkyl radical.
- a proton changes from a heteroatom of the cation to the anion.
- the solution of the problem is a method for the distillation of ionic liquids, wherein in a first step, a pressure equal to the ambient pressure or below the ambient pressure is set and in a second step, the ionic liquid to a temperature in the range of 60 ° C to 350 ° C is heated.
- cations, anions and neutral molecules which are formed in particular by protonation or alkylation of the anions by the cations, are present in equilibrium in the ionic liquid.
- At least the more volatile of the neutral molecules is distilled off during the distillation.
- ionic liquids have no measurable vapor pressure, it has been found that they are at pressures ⁇ 1 bar, preferably at pressures ⁇ 200 mbar, more preferably at pressures ⁇ 50 mbar and most preferably at pressures ⁇ 5 mbar and at bottom temperatures in the range of 60 ° C to 350 ° C, preferably in the range of 100 ° C to 350 ° C and in particular in the range of 150 ° C to 350 ° C distill.
- the separation of the more volatile of the neutral molecules specifically recovers this.
- the molecule thus recovered may be e.g. be used again later to produce a similar or different ionic liquid.
- both neutral molecules of the ionic liquid are distilled off and later recombined in a template again to the same ionic liquid.
- Ionic liquids in the context of the present invention are salts of the general formula
- n 1, 2, 3 or 4.
- Compounds which are suitable for forming the cation [A] n + of ionic liquids are known, for example, from DE 102 02 838 A1.
- such compounds may contain oxygen, phosphorus, sulfur or in particular nitrogen atoms, for example at least one nitrogen atom, preferably 1-10 nitrogen atoms, particularly preferably 1-5, very particularly preferably 1-3 and in particular 1-2 nitrogen atoms.
- other heteroatoms such as oxygen, sulfur or phosphorus atoms may be included.
- the nitrogen atom is a suitable carrier of the positive charge in the cation of the ionic liquid from which, in equilibrium, a proton or an alkyl radical can then be transferred to the anion to produce an electrically neutral molecule.
- Particularly preferred compounds are those which have a molecular weight below 1000 g / mol, very particularly preferably below 500 g / mol and in particular below 250 g / mol.

- Cations and anions are present in the ionic liquid.
- a proton or an alkyl radical is transferred from the cation to the anion. This creates two neutral molecules. This creates an equilibrium in which anions, cations and the two neutral molecules are present.
- the neutral molecules present in equilibrium in the ionic liquid can be distilled off from the ionic liquid. This affects the balance within the ionic liquid. The component recovered in this way is likewise present in high purity and can later be used again to produce an ionic liquid.
