Definitions
- the present invention relates to a process of applying coating material on grooves on wooden products or plastic products. More particularly the invention relates to a process of applying coating material on grooves or on recessed surfaces of wooden or plastic products.
- Some of the grooves are painted with colours to make them more attractive.
- patterns are created on wooden or plastic products by engraving techniques, by embossment or by other techniques known to the art. Certain portions of the pattern, especially the recessed or sunken positions are often painted.
- the technique of applying the paint on the said portions is similar to the technique of applying paint on grooves described earlier. As before paint is often inadvertently applied on areas beyond the recessed or sunken portions. This reduces the attractiveness of the finished product. Further any additional efforts to remove the paint from the undesired areas is time consuming and labour intensive.
- paint or coating material which material is in liquid form at time of application but later dries or solidifies
- a method of applying colour coating in a recessed portion of a structure whose surface includes recessed portions and non-recessed portions comprising; applying of coating substantially onto the recessed portions by spraying or brushing; allowing the coating to dry or to set; and removing the excessive colour introduced onto the non- recessed portion of the structure.
- the method further comprises of optionally applying varnish substantially onto the non-recessed portions of the structure.
- the removal of the excessive colour in the non-recessed portions is by subjecting the non-recessed portions to abrasive action.
- the varnish is substantially colourless upon drying.
- the structure is a pole or substantially planar surface or curved structure with grooves or recessed portions thereon.
- Figure 1 is a flowchart showing the flow of the process.
- Figure 2 (a) is a side view of a cylindrical member of either timber or plastics where the grooves are painted.
- Figure 2 (b) is a side view of a cylindrical member with flat surfaces at desired sections of the pole.
- Figure 3 is a perspective view of a planar surface of a timber or plastic product where the recessed portion is painted.
- Figure 4 is a cross-sectional view across line A-A of product shown in Figure 3.
- the colour painting process is summarized in the form of a flowchart .
- the colour painting process comprises:
- Grooves are produced onto the timber pole by conventional methods known to the art. Typically cylindrical poles and/ or the grooves are produced on a turning machine. Alternatively the grooves can be produced manually.
- Figure 2 (a) there is shown a timber pole (10) which is turned on a turning machine. Grooves are identified by the numeral (11) and cylindrical portions of the pole (10) is shown by the numeral (12).
- Figure 2 (b) shows a cylindrical pole (10) with groove (11) and flat square or rectangular portions (14) along desired sections of the pole. Different sized and shaped grooves can be produced using turning machine and appropriate cutting knives.
- paint or colour is introduced onto the grooves (11). This is done by one or more of several ways; by the use of an automatic spraying machine, or by manual means. It is ensured the entire portion of the grooves is painted or coloured.
- the application of paint or colour by these methods often involves the paint being introduced on the cylindrical portions (12) or on the flat square or rectangular portions (14) of the pole (the non-recessed portions).
- the poles (10) are send to a sanding process.
- the portions of the pole beyond the grooves (11) are subjected to abrasive action or sanding.
- Sanding of the pole can be done manually or by a sanding machine. Such machines are known in the art and will not be described here. Sanding of the non-groove portions (11) removes any traces of paint/ colour on the said portions, thus leaving paint/ colour only within the defined groove sections (11).
- the poles are next subjected to a varnishing process if varnish is desired on the poles.
- Varnish is applied to the poles by the use of either automatic spray machines with or without electronic devices, or normally spray devices to spray either one or more coats of clear lacquer or stains to provide a glossy surface.
- Lacquer or stains is applied generally on the non-grooved portions of the pole. However any introduction of lacquer or stains on the groove portions does not significantly destroy or damage or harm the colour or paint thereon.
- the clear lacquer or stains does not impart any colour onto the groove portions (11). It is also possible to apply other colour or paints onto the non-grooved portions of the pole by appropriate application means known in the art.
- Precise application techniques of imparting paint such as screen-painting is well known in the industry. Precise application techniques are required when coloured coats need to be applied onto the non-grooved portions (non-recessed portions) of the pole (10). Where else if clear coats, such as clear lacquer are used lo coat the poles, then simple less sophisticated, less costly techniques can be adopted to apply the lacquer.
- grooves or recessed portions can be produced on substantially planar wooden or plastic materials.
- the grooves or recessed portions (11) can be engraved manually or by machine means. Such techniques are well known in the art.
- colour is introduced into the recessed portions.
- the paint/ colour is left to dry or solidify (curing).
- the non-recessed portions (12) are subject to sand-papering to remove any colour or paint thereon. After removal of the unwanted colour or paint, the non-recess portions are subjected to a varnishing process or precise painting process as described earlier.
