Definitions
- the invention relates to a photonic crystal according to the preamble of patent claim 1.
- Photonic crystals are crystals for photons whose refractive index is periodically modulated on a scale of the wavelength of light. Photonic crystals generally consist of a periodically structured material.
- Photonic crystals show a so-called photonic band gap. Light of a certain wavelength can no longer propagate in this medium. This effect is based on a multiple reflection of the light within the crystal.
- a photonic crystal is produced by making sufficiently small holes in a material and arranging them appropriately, e.g. at regular intervals. For the light, these holes act like the atoms of a conventional crystal for the electrons, the crystal properties being determined by the arrangement and size of the holes.
- the object of the invention is to provide a photonic crystal, the crystal properties of which can be changed at any time without great effort. This object is achieved by the features of claim 1.
- the invention is based on combining a photonic crystal with a material with a variable refractive index.
- the properties of the photonic crystal can be changed very easily at any time by deliberately changing the refractive index of this material.
- Either a material with a variable refractive index is used for the carrier material or for the material forming the regular structures. Varying the refractive index changes the shape and size of the band gap in the photonic crystal. If you increase the refractive index of one material compared to the other material, the band gap increases. If the refractive index is the same in both materials, the band gap disappears completely and the photonic crystal behaves like an ordinary waveguide.
- Figure 1 a schematic representation of two different components
- FIG. 1 shows schematically two possible configurations of a two-dimensional photonic crystal 1 according to the invention.
- the crystal consists of a carrier material 2, for example in the form of a conventional waveguide, which is interspersed with regular structures in the form of two-dimensional “columns” 3.
- a material with a variable refractive index preferably a polymer
- the carrier material 2 is e.g. consists of a silicon compound.
- the carrier material 2 consists of a material with a variable refractive index, while the columns 3 z. B. consist of a silicon compound.
- any material can be used according to the invention, the refractive index of which can be changed by a physical effect.
- these include e.g. the thermo-optical and the electro-optical effect.
- materials are known whose refractive index changes when irradiated with light of a certain wavelength.
- a polymer is preferably used, since its refractive index is variable over a wide range.
- the band gap of this photonic crystal 1 By changing the refractive index of the material - hereinafter referred to simply as polymer - in the columns 3 or in the material 2 around the columns, not only can the band gap of this photonic crystal 1 be switched on and off, but the band gap can be changed by small changes in the refractive index continuously reduce or enlarge. It is therefore possible that, for example, a certain wavelength lies within the band gap and thus “sees” the structure as a photonic crystal, while an adjacent wavelength already lies outside the band gap and thus sees the structure as an ordinary waveguide.
- a standard waveguide was used, consisting of a silicon substrate 4, a lower SiO 2 cover layer 3, then the actual waveguide 6, and an upper SiO 2 cover layer 7.
- a heating element 9 is arranged on the upper cover layer 7, that is heated electrically, for example.
- the polymer 8 is selected so that its refractive index increases as the temperature rises, the refractive index in the unheated state e.g. corresponds to the refractive index of the cover layers 5, 7 and thus the entire structure functions as a photonic crystal.
- the refractive index of the polymer increases until it reaches the value of the waveguide material 6.
- the specific band gap becomes smaller and smaller until it finally disappears completely and the structure functions like an ordinary waveguide. If you now couple light, it spreads like an ordinary planar waveguide - the photonic crystal is, so to speak, switched off.
- FIG. 3 shows an example of the formation of various energy bands in the photonic crystal which are dependent on the wavelength of the light used. No light propagation in the photonic crystal is possible in the band gaps between the energy bands.
