Abstract

There is described a skin care product comprising at least one plant extract characterised in that said plant extract is present at less than homeopathic levels.

Description

Formulation
This invention relates to novel skin care product formulations for topical application containing homeopathic quantities of plant extracts that enhance the skins natural repair processes.
The inevitable ageing process of the skin, normally initiated around the age of 30, is characterised by the thinning and wrinkling of the epidermis, combined with the appearance of lines, creases, furrows and age spots. The process is associated with a reduction in the skins' ability to repair and regenerate itself, the gradual breakdown collagen and elastin in the dermal layer, fat loss and the malfunctioning of melanocytes. A number of intrinsic and extrinsic factors contribute to this ageing process. Intrinsic factors include alterations in the body's hormonal balance, whilst the extrinsic factors include the long-term exposure to ultraviolet light and the accumulation of free radicals within the skin.
A plethora of skin care products are known in the art which claim to be able to repair, renew and revitalise ageing skin. Many of these products contain antioxidants, such vitamins A, C and E, which neutralise the effects of free radicals. A number of these skin care products also comprise plant extracts, however the levels of the active components are considered herbal rather than homeopathic. For example, a skin cream composition manufactured by Chanel Inc. (US patent No. 5922331) contains both calendula and aloe vera at a herbal level of 0.2% w/w of the composition, whilst homeopathic levels are considered to be at least 10-fold less. Whereas a homeopathic composition can be defined as containing minute doses of active natural drugs/substances, a herbal composition can be defined as consisting of, or made with aromatic herbs.
Likewise, a cosmetic and dermatological composition for psoriatic skin, scalp treatment and care, described in WO0166079, contains herbal rather than homeopathic levels of plant extracts, ranging from about 0.1 to about 10 % by weight of aqueous-alcoholicglyceric extract of the mixture comprising nettle, chelidonia, oak bark, willow bark, calendula, dandelion root, camomile, achillea, dill and parsley.
A further patent, US5723138, provides an adhesive type cosmetic product for removing wrinkles prepared by coating 5-50 parts by weight of the composition comprising 5-40% by weight of vitamin E, 5-50% by weight of vitamin A and 15- 60%) by weight of concentrated natural aloe extract, and 50-95 parts by weight of an adhesive in a mixture or in a laminate structure on a carrier film
Homeopathic dilutions are often so extreme that they are dismissed by critics as being only a placebo effect. The "doses minimae" or indeed the 'law of infinitesimality', describes the fact that the remedy is given in infinitesimal doses, thereby reducing the remedy's toxicity whilst causing it to act in reverse. The principle of preparation of infinitesimal dilutions was described in Organon, and has changed little, even though it is applied industrially today. Each dilution is a hundredth of the previous one, and is called the first, fourth, thirtieth, or hundredth dilution, depending on the serial order. It is from this process that the name "Hahnemann's centesimal" originates.
According to a first aspect of the invention, we provide a skin care product for topical application comprising at least one plant extract present at homeopathic levels.
Preferably, the plant extract is a component of a homeopathic mix, wherein said homeopathic mix constitutes less than 1%> w/w of the total composition.
More preferably, said homeopathic mix constitutes between 0.25%> and 0.5% w/w of the total composition.
More preferably still, said homeopathic mix constitutes 0.38% w/w of the total composition. Preferably the level of the plant extract is in the range from 0.0001 % - 0.1% w/w of said homeopathic mix.
Any conventionally known plant extracts may be used, for example, any homeopathic plant extracts.
In a preferred embodiment of this invention, the plant extracts are selected from the group consisting of; calendula spp, aloe spp, thuya spp, articum spp, viola spp, hamamelis spp, vinca spp, articum spp, camphor spp and nerium spp.
More preferably still, the plant extracts are selected from the group consisting of; calendula officianalis, aloe barbadensis, thuya occidentalis, viola tricolor, camphor, hamamelis Virginia, vinca minor, articum lappa and nerium oleander.
The plant extracts have been derived from a number of sources that have already proven and defined homeopathic properties.
Calendula (calendula officianalis) with the common name of Marigold is a herbaceous annual with yellow petals. It is a member of the Compositae family and is native to Europe and naturalized in the United States. The Calendula plant contains essential oils, carotenoids, calenduline, lycopene, saponins, and resins. Calendula's useage is mostly topical in ointments or cremes for skin rashes, abrasions, minor burns, and eczemic conditions.
There are over 200 different species of Aloe, but of these only four are recognized as being of nutritional value to humans and animals. Aloe barbadensis, with the common names of Aloe Vera or Burn plant Aloe is a stemless, stoloniferous, clump- forming plant the medicinal properties of which have been known for some 3500 years ago. The plant was widely used by the Chinese, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans for healing skin-associated problems such as wounds, rashes, skin irritations, sunburns but also for headaches and stomach complaints. The medicinal properties are found in the resinous sap or yellow juice of the leaves, which contains a mixture of phenolic compounds and polysaccharides, considered to have a soothing and anti- inflammatory effect, which has led them to be used in different cosmetic creams and moisturizers as well as shampoos.
Thuya Occidentalis with the common name of Cedar Leaf is characterised by its medicinal properties of being an antiseptic, astringent, emollient, expectorant, fungicide, insecticide, sedative, and tonic. It has been shown that chronic conditions such as dermatitis or psoriasis can be diminished, as well as seborrhea of the scalp, dandruff and alopecia.
Arctium lappa having the common name of Burdock is considered as a remedy for eczema, psoriasis, dandruff, rheumatic complaints and cystitis.
Viola tricolor having the common name of violet contains; saponins, salicylates, alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins and mucilage (a plant exude containing protein and carbohydrates), and has been widely used for the treatment of eczema, rashes, psoriasis, acne, skin irritations and itching.
Camphor is a white crystalline substance obtained from the evergreen tree Cinnamonum camphor a. Camphor has a strong, penetrating, fragrant odour, a bitter pungent taste and is slightly cold to the touch like menthol leaves. Camphor is often used internally for its calming influence in hysteria, nervousness, neuralgia and diarrhoea and externally as a counter-irritant in rheumatisms, sprains, bronchitis, and inflammatory conditions.
Vinca minor is commonly referred tcfas 'the lesser or dwarf periwinkle,' its actions relating to the skin include being analgesic, anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, anti- inflammatory, and an astrigent. Hamamelis virginiana is commonly referred to as witch hazel and it contains varying amounts of active compounds such as flavonoids, tannins (hamamelitannin and proanthocyanidins), small amounts of volatile oil, and other components, which may be responsible for its astringent action.
The evergreen shrub Nerium Oleander or commonly called Rose Laurel or Oleander contains the ingredients oleandrin and nerioside. These ingredients are highly toxic at herbal levels but homeopathically are used to treat itching, bleeding and/or chapped skin.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, a skin product is provided, wherein said skin product is a cleansing balm, and said cleansing balm contains calendula officinalis and at least one other plant extract selected from the group consisting of; aloe spp, thuya spp, articum spp, viola spp, hamamelis spp, vinca spp, articum spp, camphor spp and nerium spp, wherein said plant extracts are present at 0.001-0.1% w/w of said homeopathic mix.
More preferably, the cleansing balm contains calendula officinalis and at least one other plant extract from the group consisting of; aloe barbadensis, thuya occidentalis, articum lappa, viola tricolor, hamamelis virginiana, vinca minor, camphor and nerium oleander, wherein said plant extracts are present at 0.001-0.1%) w/w of said homeopathic mix.
More preferably still, the cleansing balm contains calendula officinalis and thuya occidentalis at 0.01% and 0.0001% w/w respectively of said homeopathic mix.
In a second preferred embodiment of the invention, a skin product is provided, wherein said skin product is a face mask, and said face mask contains thuya occidentalis and at least one other plant extract selected from the group consisting of; aloe spp, calendula spp, articum spp, viola spp, hamamelis spp, vinca spp, articum spp, camphor spp and nerium spp, wherein said plant extracts are present at 0.001- 0.1% w/w of said homeopathic mix. More preferably, the face mask contains thuya occidentalis and at least one other plant extract from the group consisting of; aloe barbadensis, calendula officinalis, articum lappa, viola tricolor, hamamelis virginiana, vinca minor, camphor and nerium oleander, wherein said plant extracts are present at 0.001-0.1%) w/w of said homeopathic mix.
More preferably still, the face mask contains thuya occidentalis and camphor at 0.0001%) and 0.01% w/w respectively of said homeopathic mix.
