Definitions

  • TITLE A Road and Rail Going Vehicle
  • This invention relates to a road vehicle, which is adaptable to drive on a railway track. More particularly, the invention relates to an accessory for a motor vehicle, a motor vehicle and a method of retrofitting a motor vehicle.
  • motor vehicles which are adaptable for driving on a railway track, use the friction of the rubber tyres of the driven wheels to, directly or indirectly, drive the vehicle on a railway track.
  • direct friction can cause severe wear on the tyre and that indirect friction usually requires complicated transmission systems.
  • Such vehicles usually comprise a road truck fitted with two pairs of railway wheels.
  • the railway wheels can be moved between a disengaged position, such that the railway wheels are out of contact with a railway track when the vehicle is to be driven on a road, and a railway track engaging position, such that the railway wheels engage a railway track when the vehicle is to be driven on a railway track and back again. All, or at least a portion of, the weight of the truck is carried by the railway wheels when the railway wheels are moved into the railway track engaging position.
  • an accessory for a motor vehicle including: a first pair of railway wheels which is adapted to be mounted near the front wheels of a motor vehicle; a second pair of railway wheels which is adapted to be mounted near the rear wheels of the vehicle; a first and second elevating means for moving the first and second pairs, respectively, of railway wheels initially into engagement with a railway track and thereafter further displacing the first and second pairs of railway wheels so as to elevate the vehicle onto the pairs of railway wheels to a position wherein the wheels of the vehicle are clear of the ground; and a transmission means, which is configured to extend between and interconnect a driven axle or drive shaft of the vehicle and one of the pairs of railway wheels such that rotation of the driven axle or drive shaft will cause a corresponding driving rotation of the said pair of railway wheels.
  • the transmission means may include a first gear, which is to be mounted so as to be rotated with a driven axle or drive shaft, a second gear which is to be mounted so as to cooperatively rotate with a railway wheel and a communication means for communicating the driving rotation from the first to the second gear.
