Abstract
Railway braking system having rubber tyre wheels 2, 3 which may be lowered into contact with the rail 4 during emergency braking for enlarging the contact patch and thus increasing grip to improve brake force of a rail vehicle 1 (e.g. locomotive, train carriage, wagon, rolling stock). The rubber tyre wheels 2, 3 are normally stowed retracted and away from contact with the rail during normal operation (fig 2).
Description
Increased power emergency braking system for trains This invention relates to an emergency braking system for trains that reduces the stopping distance in an emergency.
Train wheels are typically made of solid metal which helps to guide the rail cars on the train tracks at high speeds. However, the consequences of this is that only a small part of the wheels and the track is in contact with each other. This means that in the event of reqiiring emergency braking the area for the wheels to grip is very small, thus only a small braking force is applied. The result of this is that in an emergency the distance required to stop is very large and few trains are able to stop In time when a real emergency arises. To overcome this, the present invention proposes an emergency braking system for trams, said system comprising; a train, said train comprising at least one tram carriage and/or wagon and/or locomotive and/or other rolling stock; at least one wheel including an outer rubber tyre; a railway said train is in physical communication with wherein said wheel is in physical communication with said train wherein said wheel has braking means wherein said wheel is lowered onto a rail of said railway to provide physical communication between said outer rubber tyre and said rail when an emergency brake is applied wherein said rubber tyre transmits a braking force between said rail and said train to slow down said train.
When an emergency brake is applied, the lowering of the wheel with a rubber tyre onto the rail not only provides an extra wheel for braking, but more importantly the rubber moulds itself to the rail like car or lorry wheels do, which greatly increases the surface area to allow extra braking forces more similar to road vehicles, which greatly reduces the stopping distances in an emergency.
Preferably, there are two or more wheels.
An example of the invention will now be described by referring to the accompanying drawings: - figure 1 shows a side view of the increased power emergency braking system for trains and; - figures 2 shows a side view of the increased power emergency braking system for trains according to the invention.
A train 1 runs on a railway 4 and is physically connected to a wheel 2 which has braking means and an outer rubber tyre 3 which is lowered onto a rail of the railway when an emergency brake is applied to slow down the train. There may be two or more wheels.
Figure 1 shows when the wheels are lowered and figure 2 shows the wheels retracted.
Claims (2)
- Claims 1 An emergency braking system for trains, said system comprising; a train, said train comprising at least one train carriage and/or wagon and/or locomotive and/or other rolling stock; at least one wheel including an outer rubber tyre; a railway said train is in physical communication with wherein said wheel is in physical communication with said train wherein said wheel has braking means wherein said wheel is lowered onto a rail of said railway to provide physical communication between said outer rubber tyre and said rail when an emergency brake is applied wherein said rubber tyre transmits a braking force between said rail and said train to slow down said train.
- 2 An emergency braking system for trains according to claim 1, wherein there are two or more wheels.
