Definitions

  • the present invention relates to the field of highly automated machine tools and relates in particular to a machining head comprising an electric chuck for holding tools, fixed on a holder provided on the machine, and equipped with a cooling system with forced circulation of a liquid coolant.
  • an electric chuck contains cables whose terminals are to be connected to the same number of terminals on the machine tool, by a conventional plug and socket system, and at least two, but usually more, inlet and outlet ducts for the liquid coolant, these ducts being connected in a sealed way by known methods to other liquid delivery and recovery ducts of the liquid supply system of the machine tool. Consequently, even if an electric chuck is fitted automatically to its holder, thus reducing the fitting time, the total set-up time, which is considered as dead time for the purposes of the machining cycle, is relatively long because of the time required for the manual closing of the said electrical and liquid circuits.
  • the inventor of the present invention has devised a machining head to which an electric chuck as- described above can be fitted (automatically or otherwise) , and in which the electric chuck has one surface to which all the terminal sections of the said electrical and liquid circuits are fitted, this surface, when the electric chuck is fitted, facing and being pressed against a surface of the holder on which the conductors and ducts of the power supply and cooling systems of the machine tools terminate.
  • the said terminal sections on the electric chuck are positioned in such a way as to form a perfect mirror image of the electrical and liquid terminals of the holder, in other words in such a way that, when the electric chuck is fitted, the corresponding circuits are closed by their connectors, which for example are of the male/female type.
  • the inventor has succeeded in devising a machining head for a machine tool in which the electric chuck and the corresponding holder act automatically as a plug and socket system for the electrical circuit and, in a broader sense, for the cooling liquid circuit.
