Definitions
- the invention relates to a cleaning product useful for cleaning titanium surfaces and its use in a method for cleaning titanium surfaces, such as facades and titanium panels.
- the excellent corrosion resistance of titanium and its alloys is due to the formation of a film of protective oxides, continuous, stable and strongly adhered to the surface. Due to the high affinity of titanium for oxygen, said oxide film forms spontaneously as soon as a recent cut of the material is exposed to the atmosphere.
- the nature, composition and thickness of the layer of protective oxides that form on the titanium surface depends on the environmental conditions. In most aqueous environments, the oxide that is generated is Ti0 2 , although a mixture of Ti0 2 , Ti 2 0 3 and TiO can also be formed. Naturally formed oxide films reach thicknesses of about 10 nm, invisible to the naked eye.
- the invention generally faces the problem of providing a method for cleaning titanium surfaces, such as the titanium panels used in the construction of facades.
- the solution provided by the invention is based on the development of a cleaning product comprising, separately, (i) a developer composition, which contains an active agent acting on the metal surface. constituted by a mixture of inorganic acids, and (ii) a fixing composition that stops and neutralizes the action of the developer composition, and in the use of said cleaning product in the cleaning of titanium surfaces.
- the use of the cleaning product and the cleaning method provided by this invention allows easy and precise cleaning of the titanium surface to be cleaned without causing surface damage.
- the invention provides a cleaning product, useful for cleaning titanium surfaces, comprising, separately, (A) a developer or cleaning composition, hereinafter developer composition, containing an active agent acting on the metal surface constituted by a mixture of inorganic acids, and (B) a fixing or neutralizing composition, hereinafter fixing composition, which stops and neutralizes the action of the developing composition.
- A a developer or cleaning composition
- developer composition containing an active agent acting on the metal surface constituted by a mixture of inorganic acids
- fixing composition a fixing or neutralizing composition
- the cleaning product of the invention comprises, separately: A) a developer composition comprising:
- A.l a mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid
- A.3 a surfactant
- B) a fixing composition comprising: B.l) an alkaline aqueous solution; B.2) a thickener;
- the developer composition comprises water, an active agent and auxiliary agents (thickener, surfactant and indicator), together with, optionally, a propellant.
- auxiliary agents thickener, surfactant and indicator
- the active agent is constituted by a mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid, and acts on the metal surface (Ti), providing the chemical reaction responsible for eliminating contamination, dirt and oxides.
- the active agent also exerts a protective effect, in order to prevent the progression of the chemical cleaning reaction towards the metal substrate.
- the active agent generally added in the form of an aqueous solution, may be present in the developer composition in a concentration between 1% and 20% by weight with respect to the total of said developer composition.
- said active agent consists of a mixture of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid, containing between 1% and 10% by weight of nitric acid with respect to the total of the developer composition and between 0.1% and 1% by weight. of hydrofluoric acid with respect to the total of the developer composition, and the weight ratio nitric acid: hydrofluoric acid is 10: 1.
- the thickener is introduced into the developer composition to stabilize it, also providing it with viscosity and certain rheological characteristics.
- a thickening agent a water-soluble organic pseudoplastic type thickener can be used, for example, cellulosic or a natural gum, for example, xanthan gum.
- the thickening agent may be present in the developer composition in a concentration comprised between 0.1% and 1% by weight with respect to the total of said developer composition.
- the surfactant modifies the surface tension of the developer composition, facilitating the formation of foam and favoring the stabilization of said composition and the dispersion of the components therein.
- the surfactants that can be used are those of the ionic type (anionic and cationic), in concentrations comprised between 0.1% and 1% by weight with respect to the total of the developer composition.
- said surfactant is sodium dodecyl sulfate.
- the indicator is introduced into the developer composition to indicate, by a color change, the moment at which neutralization of the developer composition, applied on the metal surface, occurs due to the application of the fixing composition.
- the indicator may be present in the developer composition in a concentration of less than 0.1% by weight with respect to the total of said developer composition.
- the indicator is phenolphthalein.
- the water present in the developer composition may come either from the active agent (in case the constituent acids are supplied in aqueous solution) and / or from the auxiliary agents (in case they are provided dissolved or suspended in water) and / or of water that Incorporates to complete the revealing composition.
- the developer composition can be presented in different forms of presentation, for example, foam, gel or spray gel. Depending on its form of preparation and packaging, the developer composition may or may not contain a propellant.
- the propellant or propellant is a substance that gives the packaged developer composition an internal overpressure that allows it to be projected onto the metal surface to be cleaned.
- a propellant a liquefied gas or a compressed gas can be used.
- Liquefied gases are liquid substances at room temperature due to pressure, which pass into gas when they are at atmospheric pressure. At a certain temperature, the operating overpressure is constant and matches the vapor pressure of the liquefied propellant. The vaporization of the propellant in the atmosphere facilitates the pulverization or division into thin drops of the non-volatile substances that it carries in solution, favoring the formation of microspheres.
- Illustrative examples of liquefied gases include hydrocarbons and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), which can be used in a concentration comprised between 5% and 20% by weight with respect to the total developer composition.
- the propellant is the hydrofluorocarbon identified as HFC 134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane).
- Compressed gases are substances that are injected at adequate pressures and maintain overpressure on the surface of the developer composition contained in the package, propelling it outside similarly to how A plunger would act on the surface of the liquid, especially when they are insoluble gases. As the content is discharged, the gas occupies greater volume, its initial pressure decreases and, therefore, the operating conditions vary. Nitrogen, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and air can be used in amounts appropriate to the required working pressure.
- the preparation and packaging of the developer composition depends on the form or type of viscous vehicle in which it is applied.
- said developer composition may be presented in the form of:
- RE foam
- RGP projected gel
- RG gel
- the foam and projected gel-type products are prepared in pressurized and acid-resistant containers, from the corresponding components [active agent, auxiliary agents (in the form of a gel or aqueous mixture of the thickener, surfactant and indicator), water and propellant gas , in the appropriate proportions to meet the defined percentages for the desired final product].
- active agent active agent
- auxiliary agents in the form of a gel or aqueous mixture of the thickener, surfactant and indicator
- water and propellant gas in the appropriate proportions to meet the defined percentages for the desired final product.
- the application of the revealing composition is carried out, for example, by spray projection, allowing a period of time longer than 3 hours, preferably less than 1 hour, between the packaging operation and the application.
- the gel type product is prepared in containers resistant to acidic media, from the components corresponding [active agent, gel or aqueous mixture of auxiliary agents (thickener, surfactant and indicator) and water, in appropriate proportions to meet the defined percentages for the desired final product].

- the propellant which may be a liquefied gas or a compressed gas, performs the same function as mentioned in relation to the developer composition.
- the propellant present in the fixing composition may be the same or different than the propellant used in the developer composition (if it contains propellant).
- the propellant may be present in the fixing composition in a concentration between 5% and 20% by weight with respect to the total of said fixing composition when the propellant is a liquefied gas, for example, a hydrocarbon or an HFC, such as HFC 134a.
- the propellant is a compressed gas, for example, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide or air
- said propellant is used, as previously mentioned, in the amount appropriate to the required working pressure.
- the fixing composition may be presented in any suitable form of presentation, for example, in the form of foam (FE) when the propellant is a liquefied gas or in the form of a projected gel (FGP) when the propellant is a compressed gas.
- FE foam
- FGP projected gel
- Both products are prepared in pressurized containers and resistant to alkaline media, from the corresponding components [neutralizing active agent, auxiliary agents (in the form of gel or aqueous mixture of thickener and surfactant) in proportions such that meet the defined percentages for the desired final product and propellant gas].
- the application of the fixing composition is carried out, for example, by spraying with a gun, allowing a period of time greater than 3 hours, preferably less than 1 hour, between the packaging operation and the application.
- the invention provides a cleaning product, useful for cleaning titanium surfaces, which has, separately, the characteristics set out in Table 1.

- a fixing composition containing: a base 5-15% a thickener 2-8% a surfactant 0.1-1% a propellant (liquefied gas) 5-20% water (sufficient quantity for) 100%
- the active agent comprises a mixture of 60% HN0 3 and HF 48
- the thickener is xanthan gum
- the surfactant is sodium dodecyl sulfate
- the Indicator is phenolphthalein
- the propellant (liquefied gas) is HFC 134a.
- the cleaning product of the invention in the fixing composition, is sodium hydroxide, the thickener is sepiolite, the surfactant is sodium dodecyl sulfate and the propellant (liquefied gas) is HFC 134a.
- the cleaning product of the invention is useful for cleaning titanium surfaces, in particular, titanium facades. Therefore, the invention provides a method for cleaning titanium surfaces comprising the use of the cleaning product of the invention. More specifically, said method comprises the steps of:
- a) apply the developer composition of the cleaning product of the invention on the titanium surface to be cleaned and leave it to act for a period of time; b) applying the fixing composition of the cleaning product of the invention on the titanium surface previously treated with said developer composition in step a), and allowing it to act for a period of time; c) aspirating the previously treated titanium surface with said developer and fixing compositions in steps a) and b); and d) rinse the treated titanium surface after performing step c).
- Step a) or development consists in the application of the developer composition of the cleaning product of the invention, completely and homogeneously, on the titanium surface to be cleaned, which is recommended to be dry. If necessary, the titanium surface is dried by using tools or tools that do not cause mechanical damage to the metal surface. Depending on the form of presentation of the revealing composition, it will be administered in one way or another.
- the foam (RE) and projected gel (RGP) developer compositions are applied by an appropriate spray gun, while the gel-shaped developer (RG) composition is applied with a sponge paddle trying not to produce mechanical damage on the metal surface. Once applied the developer composition on the metal surface, it is allowed to act for a period of time between 15 seconds and 10 minutes before applying the fixing composition.
- Stage b) or fixed consists in the application of the fixing composition of the cleaning product of the invention on the metal surface previously treated with said developer composition in stage a), ensuring that it covers it completely and homogeneously.
- Foam (FE) and spray gel (FGP) fixing compositions are applied by an appropriate spray gun. Once the fixing composition has been applied, it is allowed to act for a period of time between 30 seconds and 5 minutes before proceeding to the next stage and previously verifying that the neutralizing active agent of the fixing composition has neutralized the acid present in the developer composition by turning the color of the indicator or, alternatively, by other means, for example, by using paper strips to determine the pH (pH paper).
- stage c) or aspiration is carried out, in which the previously treated titanium surface is aspirated in order to remove the products deposited on said titanium surface under treatment.
- the aspiration is carried out carefully using a suitable system that avoids the production of chemical-mechanical damage on the metal surface.
- stage d) or rinsing takes place, which consists in clarifying the treated metal surface by means of pressurized water at a temperature between 5 ° C and 30 ° C, in order to eliminate the remains of the products used in the previous stages.
- the surface of titanium to be cleaned is a titanium facade or titanium panels intended for the construction of facades.
- HFC 134a liquefied gas
- water sufficient quantity for 100% where the percentages are percentages by weight with respect to the total of the developer composition
- HFC 134a (liquefied gas) 5-20% water (sufficient quantity for) 100%
- Both the developer and the fixative composition were prepared and packed in foam form by incorporating the various components in the desired amounts.
- Titanium panels were cleaned using cleaning products prepared according to Example 1.1. For this, the following protocol was followed:
- the cleaning products tested demonstrated their effectiveness in cleaning the treated titanium panels.
