Description

DISHWASHING MACHINE WITH SINGLE-PIECE PLASTIC
DOOR
DESCRIPTION
The present invention refers to a dishwashing machine provided with a front loading door that is made as a single piece of plastic material.
Known from the disclosure in for instance US-A-4 179 307 is a method in which a dishwashing machine is made up as an assembly of functional units, each one of which is provided as a single-piece construction of plastic material. These functional units of the machine also include at least a door adapted to close a corresponding front access aperture of the machine. Such a solution allows for considerable manufacturing economies to be obtained on an industrial scale.
Known in the art there are also dishwashing machines, in which the front access or loading door comprises a substantially transparent window enabling the user to visually inspect the interior of the washing vessel of the machine. Such a transparent, i.e. viewing window is made separately and is then assembled under interposition of appropriate sealing gaskets in correspondence of an aperture in the door, the overall structure of which turns however out as being undesirably complex, labour-intensive and, therefore, expensive to assemble.
It therefore is a main purpose of the present invention to provide a dishwashing machine equipped with a single-piece plastic door, which is capable of aggregating the advantages of the above-cited prior-art, while doing away with the drawbacks thereof.
More particularly, it is a purpose of the present invention to provide a dishwashing machine equipped with a single-piece plastic door, which is not only simple and low-cost, but is also capable of enabling the user to visually inspect the interior of the washing vessel of the machine.
According to the present invention, these and further aims are reached in a dishwashing machine with a single-piece plastic door embodying the characteristics as recited and defined in the appended claims.
Anyway, features and advantages of the present invention may be more readily understood from the description that is given below by way of non- limiting example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
- Figures 1 and 2 are a schematic perspective view of a dishwashing machine according to the present invention, with the front loading door thereof closed and open, respectively;
- Figure 3 is a partially cross-sectional and enlarged side view of the door of the dishwashing machine of Figure 1 ;
- Figures 4 and 5 are cross-sectional, enlarged- scale views of the door illustrated in Figure 3, according to different embodiments thereof.
With references to the' Figures, the dishwashing machine mainly comprises an outer casing 1 housing a washing vessel 2 that is accessible though a preferably front door 3. The door 3 is made as a single component part in a single-piece construction of a plastic material, at least a portion 4 of which is substantially transparent, so as to enable the user to visually inspect the interior of the washing vessel 2 of the machine even when said door is closed, as shown in Figure 1.
In particular, said portion 4 of the door is manufactured by injection- moulding of such a thermoplastic material as for instance substantially clear, i.e. transparent methacrylate ester or polycarbonate.
The transparent portion 4 is subsequently inserted in a mould in which substantially opaque thermoplastic material, such as for instance opaque methacrylate or ABS, is then over-injected on to the same portion 4, in such a manner as to manufacture a single-piece door 3 comprising a substantially opaque load-bearing structure 5 provided with a preferably small-sized window 4.
As an alternative method (depending on and in accordance with the arrangement and the geometry or shape of the various component parts), it may be possible for the opaque structure 5 to be first produced by injection-moulding, on which structure a substantially transparent portion 4 can then be overinjected.
In a further alternative method, said opaque structure 5 and said transparent window 4 may be produced at the same time, i.e. concurrently by a so-called dual- injection process.
In an advantageous manner, one of the above cited component parts 4,
5 (preferably the opaque portion 5) can include, integral therewith, also a handle 6 (on the front or outside surface thereof) and/ or a series of substantially peripheral ribs or furrows 7 protruding from the inside surface of the door. Said ribs or furrows 7 may most advantageously perform a threefold function, i.e.:
- they ensure an adequate strength and rigidity to the entire access door assembly 3;
- they ensure an adequate pressure being exerted, when the door 3 is closed, against a sealing gasket 8 that is arranged in correspondence of the front border of the washing vessel 2; and
- they form, when the door 3 is opened, respective side sliding planes for supporting a dish-carrying rack 9, situated substantially at the same level, when being pulled out of the washing vessel.
In a preferred manner, the opaque portion 5 of the single-piece door assembly is manufactured with the use of a moulding technique available for the production of so-called "sandwich" structures. In other words, the injection-moulding process is carried out using both a virgin, high-grade thermoplastic material (such as methacrylate or ABS) and low-cost compatible re-conditioned, i.e. recycled material (such as re-conditioned methacrylate or ABS) to which a foaming agent is added.
Owing to the different fluidity of the materials used, during the moulding process the noble material (indicated at 10 in Figure 4) arranges itself outwardly (e.g. with a layer of approx. 1 mm), thereby forming the outlining surfaces delimiting the door 3, whereas the core of the door structure is formed by the re-conditioned material (indicated at 1 1).
Conclusively, a single-piece door assembly 3 is obtained, which not only ensures convenient visibility of the interior of the machine through the window portion 4, but also substantially contributes in an advantageous manner, thanks also to the above-mentioned sandwich structure, to a reduced transmission and emission of noise from the interior of the machine into the surrounding ambient. Furthermore, the outer arrangement of the noble thermoplastic material 10 confers a pleasant aesthetical appeal to the whole single-piece door assembly 3.
Similar considerations also apply to the variant that is illustrated schematically in Figure 5, in which the opaque portion 5 of the single- piece door design is manufactured through the use of a so-called air- moulding technique. In other words, the injection-moulding process is carried out under injection of nitrogen (which is then recovered) in the molten mass of thermoplastic material so as to create respective air pockets 12 determining the formation of the afore cited protruding ribs or furrows 7 and/or the afore cited handle 6, or the like.
It shall be appreciated that the above described dishwashing machine may be the subject of a number of modifications without departing from the scope of the present invention.
