Abstract

A window for electrical household appliances (washing machines or tumble driers) comprises a transparent cup-shaped element 1 having a substantially hemispherical shape, and a frame element 3 consisting of a single piece of thermoplastic material applied to the peripheral edge 2 of the cup-shaped element. The frame 3 may be moulded in place or moulded before being applied to the glass or plastics window 1. <IMAGE>

Description

1 WINDOW FOR ELECTRICAL HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES 1 The present invention

relates to windows for electrical household appliances. More particularly, the invention relates to windows for washing machines or air dryers (tumble dryers).

At present, windows for this type of machine are constituted by a cupshaped element of glass or transparent plastics material, of substantially hemispherical shape. Onto the edge of said cup-shaped element an aesthetic frame is usually applied and is kept stably fastened in its position by means of a suitable counter-frame fastened to the glass or plastics material by means of adhesive agents, or by means of suitable fastening means such as screws.

Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a vertical sectional view of a window according to the prior art. In this window, along the edge 1 of a glass cup-shaped element 2 is applied a frame 3 performing an aesthetic function, and there is also applied a counter-frame 4 which is provided with a contoured projection 5 engageable with a groove 6 provided in the frame 3.

When the counter-frame is fastened onto the cup-shaped element, by means of suitable fastening elements such as screws, the contoured element 4, by being engaged inside the groove 5, locks the frame, 2 keeping it stably fastened in the desired position.

To the assembly constituted by the frame and the counter-frame, a hinge is fastened which links the window unit to the machine frame, and, in the diametrically opposite position, an opening/shutting system consisting of a manually or electrically operated spring-urged tooth is applied.

As a consequence, the preparation of the windows according to the prior art requires a number of operating steps, such as the separate moulding of the frame and of the counterframe, and then the assembly of both pieces to the glass/plastics cup-shaped element. As a result, the manufacturing process is relatively costly.

The present Applicant has now developed window, e.g. a window for washing machines or air dryers, which does not have the above mentioned drawbacks, in that it is obtained by means of a production process consisting of a single moulding operation.

The present invention provides a window for electrical household appliances, which window comprises a transparent cup-shaped element having a substantially hemispherical shape, and a frame element consisting of one single piece of thermoplastic material applied astride the peripheral edge of said cup-shaped element.

The frame element can be applied to the edge by 3 means of any suitable technique. For example, the frame element can be directly moulded astride the peripheral edge of the cup-shaped element, or the frame unit can be separately moulded and is applied to the edge of the cup-shaped element at a later time. In this second case, the two pieces can be fastened to each other by means of any of the methods known in the art for that purpose. For example, the two pieces can be hot- welded or they can be bonded to each other by means of suitable adhesive agents.

According to the present invention, the transparent cup-shaped element is preferably made from glass, although transparent plastics materials, such as polycarbonate, polymethylmethacrylate, styrene-acrylonitrile resins, and so forth, can be used instead.

The peripheral edge of the cup-shaped element can be bent outward and lie at an angle of approximately 90 to the external surface of the cup-shaped element. In this way, the edge of the cup-shaped element has the shape of an annulus whose height is a function of the size of the window according to the present invention and therefore of the size of the electrical household appliance on which the window has to be installed. However, heights comprised within the range of from 1 to 3 em are most commonly used.

4 When the edge of the cup-shaped element is bent outward, the frame unit is applied astride the outward protruding edge.

Inasmuch as the outward protruding edge is provided along the whole length of the peripheral edge of the transparent cup-shaped element, the frame unit has an essentially toroidal shape, and it preferably has a hollow vertical section with walls of uniform thickness, comprised within the range of from 1 to 3 mm.

In order to prepare the frame unit, any plastics material can be used. Illustrative examples comprise: polystyrene, impact-resistant polystyrene, polystyrene modified with such polar monomers as acrylonitrile, styrene alloys such as ABS, SAN, and so forth, Polyvinylchloride, high-, medium-, low-density polythene, polypropylene, ethylene/propylene copolymers, acrylic and/or methacrylic resins, polymethacrylates, polycarbonates, polyester resins such as PET, PBT, and so forth, to which reinforcing agents, such as mineral fillers, fibres, and so forth are possibly added.Also mixtures of the above listed polymers can be used. Preferred thermoplastic materials are polypropylene, polystyrenes and polyethylenes.

When the frame unit is directly moulded on the edge of the cup-shaped element, the frame unit can be moulded according to any technique known in the art. A preferred technique is that known as air injection moulding, as disclosed in published German patent application no. 2,501, 314; in U.K. patent No. 2,139,548; in U.S. patent no. 4,740,150; and in published European patent application nos. 309,257 and 289,230.

The invention will be further described by way of example only, withreference to Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings, which is a vertical section of a window according to the present invention.

Referring to Figure 2, a window for electrical household appliances according to the present invention comprises a transparent cup-shaped element 1 provided with a peripheral edge 2 bent at an angle of approximately 90 to the external surface of the same cup-shaped element.

A frame 3 consisting of a single piece of thermoplastic material is moulded around the edge 2, e.g. by means of the air injection moulding technique; said frame has an inner hollow running along its whole length.

Claims
1. A window for electrical household appliances, comprising a transparent cup-shaped element having a substantially hemispherical shape, and a frame element consisting of a single piece of thermoplastic material applied to the peripheral edge of said cup-shaped element.
2. A window as claimed in claim 1, wherein the frame unit is directly moulded astride the edge of the cup-shaped element.
3. A window as claimed in claim 1, wherein the frame unit is separately moulded and is fastened to the edge of the cup-shaped element.
4. A window as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3, wherein the frame unit, having an essentially toroidal shape, has a hollow vertical section with walls of uniform thickness comprised within the range of from 1 to 3 mm.
5. A window as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the thermoplastic material is selected from polypropylene, polystyrenes and polyethylenes.
6. A window according to claim 1, substantially as herein described with reference to, and as shown in, Figure 2 of the accompanying drawings.
