Definitions
- the invention relates to a vertical cutter for treating- a lawn, for example a green, and of the kind that comprises a carriage which is running across the lawn during treatment, a shaft rotatably mounted on the carriage at a distance above the lawn and oriented mainly crosswise to the direction of motion, an engine for rotating the shaft, a number of vertical cutting blades non-rotatably mounted with spacing on the shaft, and a spacer mounted between each of two adjacent vertical cutting blades.
- a vertical cutter is typically used for treating a green around a hole on a golf course.
- the character of golf demands that the green offers the least possible resistance to the movement of the golf balls and that this resistance furthermore is constant to the greatest possible extent.
- grass is a living organism that grows and therefore is likely to change texture depending on the weather and local growing conditions. Therefore, it is necessary to cut the grass frequently to e.g. a height of 3 mm.
- the cut grass and other plant material will lie as a mat layer of a thickness of for example a couple of millimetres on the ground.
- This mat layer is bad for the free access of air, water and light to the roots of the grass. Thereby, the growing conditions of the grass are deteriorated, the result of which is that the green eventually will not be able to meet the required standard.
- the mat layer is therefore cut through by means of a vertical cutter during which possible offshoots also are cut.
- a conventional vertical cutter with front mounted collecting box and guide screen behind the vertical cutting blades will however only be able to throw a small part of the loosened mat up on the guide screen and along this further to the collecting box. The rest will remain lying on the ground and has to be removed in a separate operation, for example by driving across the green one more time with a rotating brush for sweeping up the material .
- a further treatment of the green consists in pricking holes in the ground to a depth of e.g. 8-20 mm measured from the top of the grass of the green usually in the spring and autumn.
- the material thereby brought up from the holes is shaped as grains of a diameter of e.g. 8-20 mm.
- the grains remain on the ground and therefore subsequently have to be swept up or removed by for example running over the green with a scraping blade in V- shape with hydraulic lift.
- a vertical cutter of the kind mentioned in the opening paragraph is provided, that is able to collect loose material on the ground during a vertical cutting of a lawn in a more effective manner than hitherto known.
- a vertical cutter of the kind mentioned in the opening paragraph is provided, that is able to remove loose material on -the ground during the vertical cutting of a lawn even with worn vertical blades .
- a vertical cutter of the kind mentioned in the opening paragraph that removes loose material on the ground during the vertical cutting of a lawn in a manner which is gentle on the grass.
- a vertical cutter of the kind mentioned in the opening paragraph that raises the grass during the vertical cutting of a lawn.
- each spacer is non-rotatably mounted on the shaft and provided with brushes .
- the brushes will effectively sweep loosened mat and possible grains from a pricking of the green up on the guide screen and further along this screen to the front mounted collecting box. Thereby, the need for expensive additional operations for removing said material is eliminated.
- the brushes are flexible. Their effect is therefore not or hardly changed even if the vertical blades are worn, and the distance of the blade shaft above the ground is therefore adjusted so that the brushes eventually will touch the grass. Due to the flexibility of the brushes, the loose material is swept up without damaging the grass which on the contrary is raised so that the vertical cutter according to the invention leaves the treated lawn in perfect condition.
- Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic perspective view obliquely from above of a vertical cutter according to the invention
- Fig. 2 is on a larger scale a fractional perspective view of a rotatable blade shaft which is part of the vertical cutter in fig. 1 and provided with parallel vertical blades and spacers for keeping these blades in spacing,
- Fig. 3 is on an even larger scale a perspective view of one of the spacers in fig. 2,
- Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic cross-sectional view of the vertical cutter according to the invention in function on a lawn
- Fig. 5 shows a second embodiment of a spacer with brushes according to the invention.
- the vertical cutter according to the invention is used for treating a green around a hole on a golf course.
- Fig. 1 shows that the vertical cutter comprises a frame 1 for a carriage (not shown) which is running across the green during a vertical cutting operation.
- a blade shaft 2 is rotatably journaled and is rotated by an engine (not shown) during operation at a rotational speed of e.g. 1000-2000 rpm.
- an engine not shown
- a number of parallel vertical blades 3 are mounted in a non-rotatable manner and kept in spacing by the spacers 4.
- a front mounted collecting box 5 is serving for collecting loosened material from the green during the vertical cutting operation.
- the collecting box is located on the rear of the vertical cutter - seen in ⁇ the direction of motion - for the sake of clarity while the collecting box in reality is mounted on the front.
- the blades 3 and the spacers 4 are non-rotatably mounted on the shaft 2 so that they forcedly follow its rotation.
- this non-rotatable mounting can also be done in any other expedient way.
- Fig. 2 shows a preferred embodiment of such a non-rotatable mounting.
- a hexagonal shaft 2 is non-rotatably coupled to the vertical blades 3 and the spacers 4 respectively by means of complementarily shaped hexagonal holes in these parts.
- the vertical blades 3 are thin discs of e.g. a durable steel. Each of these discs are designed with a number of teeth 6 distributed along the periphery with uniform spacing. The teeth are serving for treating the green in a way which will be described in detail with reference to fig. 4.
- a cylindrical spacer 4 is shown with a hexagonal hole 7 fitting the hexagonal shaft 2.
- three brushes 8 are extending radially outwards from the periphery of the spacer at a mutual angular distance of 120°.
- Each brush 8 preferably fills the entire gap between two adjacent vertical blades and consists of a number of flexible bristles 9 which, as shown in fig. 4, are fixed in radial holes 10 in the spacers 4 which e.g. can be cast of a suitable plastic material.
- Fig. 4 shows the vertical cutter in operation on a green 11 with grass 12 of a height of e.g. 3 mm.
- grass 12 of a height of e.g. 3 mm.
- a mat layer 14 of a thickness of e.g. 2 mm has settled.
- the vertical cutter and the vertical blades are running and rotating respectively in the direction indicated by the arrows. During this, the teeth 6 of the vertical blades are cutting through the mat layer 14 and, in the case shown, a further distance into the subjacent dirt 13.
- Fig. 4 shows a situation in which new vertical blades are being used.
- the brushes 8 in this case have a slightly smaller radial extent than the teeth 6 of the vertical blades and they therefore only touch the top of the grass when the teeth 6 of the vertical blades are in the ground.
- the brushes 8 are effectively sweeping the loosened mat and other possible material on the ground, for example grains from a previous pricking of the green, up on a guide screen 15 which - seen in the direction of motion - is located behind the vertical blades 3.
- the swept up material is guided along the guide screen 15 further into the front mounted collecting box 5 in the direction indicated by the arrow.
- the vertical cutter is also used for only thinning out the grass on the green.
- the vertical blades are therefore not made to penetrate into the ground via the mat layer but only to work on the grass itself.
- the brushes are functioning in the same way as described above.
- the green 11 can be vertically cut and weeded of loosened mat and other possible material in one and the same work routine.
- the vertical cutter according to the invention therefore considerably reduces the costs of maintaining the green .
- the bristles 9 of the brushes 8 are however made of a flexible material that allow the brushes to bend flexibly so that the grass is not damaged but on the contrary is raised so that the green will obtain the desired perfect condition even if the teeth of the vertical blades are worn.
- Fig. 5 shows a second embodiment of a spacer according to the invention.
- the spacer 16 has a hexagonal periphery which is congruent with the hexagonal hole 7.
- the hole of the spacers can have any other polygonal design, for example triangular or hexagonal.
