- the lamps above the surgical site is provided in a manner so that more than only one lamp illuminates the position at the site where light is needed or demanded.
- the lamps are situated in each their own motorised suspension (not shown) so that an actuator (not shown) may control the direction of each of the lamps individually.
- the suspension must preferably enable the lamps to tilt freely in any direction, and optionally also enable the lamps to rotate, or at least enable the lamps to tilt in any direction within a limited sphere, which the lamp in question must be able to illuminate.
- Fig. 4 explains how the light emitted from the pointing device shown in fig. 3 is detected and analysed by the cameras in the ceiling as shown in fig. 1 and fig. 2.
- the light beam emitted from the pointing device is either circular cylindrical or frusto-conical. Both configurations of the light beam will however at a certain location, as example at the location of the cameras, be observed as a ring of light. Depending on the direction of the pointing device in comparison with the location where the ring of light formed by the light beam is detected, the ring of light will be observed as either a circle or as an ellipse. There will be no other possibilities of the shape because these two shapes are those possible of conic sections, when the conic sections are not hyperbolas.
- the light emitting end is capable of emitting an annular, preferably circular, light beam.
- the light beam is either, and preferably, circular, but may alternatively be frusto-conical.
- Other means of establishing light emission in the light-emitting end of the pointing device may be employed.
- any other suitable detection device may be used. Accordingly, any photosensitive devices or photoelectric cells may be used. Photosensitive devices are not individually capable of establishing the inclination of the pointing device if the aforementioned method is used of measuring axis in a ring of light. However, if a number of photo sensitive devices being scattered tightly all over the ceiling of the surgery room is used in combination, it may be possible to use this method to establish the position and the inclination of the pointing device. Alternatively, using the above single LED in the pointing device and using photosensitive devices in the ceiling will result in the technique used being very simple, being very cost-effective and being very reliable.
- the pointed end By using the pointed end to point at where the light should be directed to, as example at a specific position in the abdomen or other bodily parts of a person's body, and by tilting the pointing device with the light-emitting end in a direction from where the light from the lamps should be emitted, is possible to establish precisely the position at the site, such as a person's body, and the direction from the lamps in the ceiling to this position.
