Definitions
- the present invention relates generally to self-supported steps. Specifically the present invention relates to movement of a step between a first retracted position and a second extended position for alighting and boarding from a railway car or the like .
- Ramps are sometimes used at railway cars for alighting and boarding.
- a ramp needs support from a platform to hold the ramp during such alighting and boarding.
- DE 4134559 describes such a ramp, which needs support from a platform. It is, however, desirable not to be dependent of a platform as support since different railway stations have differently elevated platforms.
- a problem with movable steps is that links or stays above the step occupy the same space that doors occupy when the floor level of a railway car and the floor level of a movable step are close to each other.
- One object of the present invention is to provide an arrangement that increases the space above a movable self- supporting step.
- Another object of the present invention is to provide an arrangement that reduces the risk of crushing injuries when a step is moved between its retracted and extended positions .
- An advantage with the present invention is that it increases the available space above an extended step.
- Another advantage with the present invention is that it reduces the risk for crushing injuries during use of a movable step.
- Fig. 1 shows a side view of a movable step in retracted position
- Fig. 2 shows a side view of the movable step shown in Fig. 1 in extended position
- Fig. 3 shows a side view of the movable step shown in Fig. 1, where an obstacle interrupt movement of the movable step;
- Fig. 4 shows a side view of the movable step shown in Fig. 2 with a cutaway portion.
- An arrangement for movement of a self-supported step 1 between a first retracted position and a second extended position at a railway car or the like comprises: a lever arm 2 and a swivel arm 8 at each side of the step 1 and a pivoting device 9 mounted at the railway car between the swivel arms .
- the arrangement will be described regarding one side of the step 1, since the opposite side of the step 1 is eguivalently designed.
- the lever arm 2 is in one point 14 close to a first end thereof jointly attached to a plate 6 and to the step 1.
- the lever arm 2 is in another point 16 close to the other end thereof jointly attached to the railway car.
- the lever arm 2 has a stopper 3 arranged between the points 14 and 16, and a sealing tip 5 arranged in the extension of the lever arm 2.
- the stopper 3 comprises an essentially flat side substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the lever arm 2.
- the sealing tip 5 is arranged to protect the pivoting device 9 against dirt when the step 1 is in its retracted
- the swivel arm 8 is in one point 13 close to one end thereof jointly attached to the step 1 and to the plate 6, and in another point 15 close to the other end thereof attached to the pivoting device 9.
- the distance between the attachment points 13 and 15 of the swivel arm 8 differs from the distance between the attachment points 14 and 16 of the lever arm 2, such as to provide a desired movement of the step.
- the swivel arm 8 has a locking device 7 arranged in its longitudinal direction.
- the locking device 7 comprises an essentially flat side substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the swivel arm 8, arranged to lock to the stopper 3 when the step 1 is in extended position.
- the attachment points 13-16 of the lever arm 2 and the swivel arm 8 form a triangular shape when the step 1 is in extended position.
- the attachment point 13 of the swivel arm 8 is apart from the attachment point 14 of the lever arm 2, in the step 1.
- the plate 6 connects the lever arm 2 and the swivel arm 8 to enhance the stability of the arrangement. Since both the step 1 and to the plate 6, the step 1 is predictably moved between its retracted and extended positions .
- the step 1 When the step 1 is in its retracted position, as illustrated in Fig. 1, it is arranged integrated with the profile of the side of the railway car.
- the pivoting device 9 revolves the swivel arm 8 out from the side of the railway car.
- the step 1 is therewith lifted upwards until the locking device 7 is positioned at the stopper 3, and the step 1 is in its extended position, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
- This movement is e.g. performed by means of that the pivoting device 9 revolves the swivel arm 8 to a predetermined position, see Fig. 2, where the locking device 7 is at the stopper 3.
- the stopper 3 and the locking device 7 keeps the step 1 in its extended position by means of mutual locking of the swivel arm 8 and the lever arm 2.
- the locking of the step 1 in extended position may also be performed by locking the pivoting device, but this is a less preferred solution.
- the step 1 When the step 1 is in its extended position, as illustrated in Fig. 2, it is positioned essentially at the same elevation level as a landing 10 of the railway car.
- the whole arrangement, that is used to extend/retract the step 1, is completely below this elevation level, and therewith no parts exist above this elevation level where there is a risk of crushing injuries.
- the pivoting device 9 is arranged to revolve the swivel arm 8 back, towards the railway car, to the retracted position illustrated in Fig. 1.
- the pivoting device 9 is run by an electrical motor, which that control the extension/retraction of the step 1, i.e. to predetermined positions. Activation of the extension/retraction of the step 1 may be performed in several different ways. Opening/closing of a door above the step 1 may activate extension/retraction of the step. Buttons at the outside and/or inside of the railway car may extend/retract the step 1. Buttons at the engine driver or wireless remote control are other alternatives that may be used.
- the second embodiment of the present invention comprises all features described in the first embodiment.
- the step 1 is a stand alone unit attached to a support structure in which the lever arms 8 and the swivel arms 2 are attached to as described above.
- the step 1 is arranged to allow a small movement relative the support structure.
- the arrangement comprises detectors that detect positions of the step 1 relative the support structure.
- a movement of the step is interrupted.
- interruptions may be: Detection of an obstacle 17 on the platform obstructing the extension of the step 1, induces the step to be retracted.
- a weight on the step such as a person alighting/boarding the railway car, interrupt retraction of the step 1.
- the platform is very close to the railway car the step 1 is kept in retracted position, since there is no gap to bridge between the railway car and the platform.
- the design of the arrangement is illustrated in Fig. 4 with the plate 6 cutaway.
