EXTENSIBLE CAR-STEP.
Application filed February 19, 1915.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN F. SCHRAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Palatine, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Extensible Car-Steps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in car steps and more particularly to an extensible car step that can be operated from the car platform to enable the passengers to.
easily board and leave the car.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawings which form a p art of said specification and in which,

Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The reference character 1 designates a car provided with the usual end platform 2 having the shafts 8 controlled by hand cranks 4. To the lower end of the shafts 3 below the platform floor I connect the rods 5, which run parallel with the body of the car, by means of the bevel gears 6 so that rotation of the shaft 3 will rotate the rod 5. Each rod 5, one being arranged on each side of each platform, is provided with a pair of radial arms 7, 7, which are fast to said rod, that carry one end of the pitmen 8, 8, that are secured by means of suitable pins to the lugs 9 of the extensible step 10, said lugs depending from the under side of said step.
The distance from center to center of the lugs on the front and rear edges of the step 10 is equal to the distance from the center Specification of Letters Patent.

of the pins supporting the radial arms to the center of the pins carrying the pitmen and said step 10 is connected by the pivot pin 12 with the riser 13 which is connected by a pivot pin 14k to the depending lugs or cars of the platform step 16.
In Fig. 2 of the drawings the extensible step is shown in operative position. To retract the same the shaft 3 is rotated in a direction to cause the rod 5 to move the radial arms 7 away from the adjacent platform step thus moving the riser 13 about the pin 14: as a center and moving the extensible step up parallel with the riser into the position illustrated in Fig. 6.
The friction of the bevel gears 6 working upon each other is sufficient to frictionally retain the mechanism in an adjusted position. The step is again positioned, of course, by rotating the shaft 5 in the opposite direction thus reversing the motion of the connections of said shaft.
WVhat is claimed is A device of the type described, comprising an initial step fixed to a car-platform and having its ends provided upon their inner surfaces with inwardly extending portions supporting the tread of the step, said step ends having downwardly extending apertured lugs, a foldable step having upstanding apertured lugs near its rear corner edges and depending apertured lugs upon its underside near the forward corner edges, a riser of rectangular plate outline, having upper and lower edge apertured lugs, with their apertures extending parallel with the longitudinal edges of the riser, the lower edge apertured lugs extending about in alinement with the corresponding edge of i the riser, said edge of the riser being notched adjacent said bottom edge lugs, pivoting pins inserted in opposed apertured lugs of said initial step, riser and foldable step, pitmen having pivotal connection with the forward lower edge lugs of said foldable step, and actuating mechanism for said pitmen, operable from the car-platform.
