Definitions

  • This invention relates to an elevator system, and more particularly to an elevator cab having an access door to provide access from within the elevator cab to elevator operating components located outside of the elevator cab.
  • Common elevator systems include a separate machine room outside of the elevator shaft, which contains much of the operating machinery and controls for the elevator system.
  • Machine rooms typically are outside of the elevator shaft. Entering the machine room provided an individual access to the system components and machinery for maintenance or repair, for example.
  • the mechanic To perform maintenance, the mechanic must run the cab to an appropriate location in the hoistway, stop the cab, access either the top of the cab or a platform, adjust the platform or cab to the appropriate position, and then proceed with the service or maintenance. Additionally, the mechanic preferably sets up safety warnings to other individuals to prevent people from entering the cab. The mechanic also preferably implements procedures that lock out movement of the elevator cab within the hoistway while the platform is in use.
  • the elevator system includes an elevator cab having an access door.
  • the access door is positioned in a side of the elevator cab to conceal an access way into the hoistway from inside the cab.
  • the access way provides direct access to elevator operating components within the hoistway, such as an elevator controller, while a technician is within the cab itself.
  • a mechanic need only run the cab to a predetermined position that provides access to the desired elevator operating components. Once reaching the predetermined position, the mechanic opens the access door to obtain direct access to the hoistway interior. The mechanic can then perform maintenance or service on the particular elevator operating components from the enclosed safety of the cab.
  • the main line disconnect switch is preferably located within the hoistway adjacent the elevator controller to allow simultaneous access.

  • the system 10 generally includes a car 12 installed in an elevator hoistway 14 in a known manner such that it is movable between floors 16.
  • a counterweight 18 is typically provided to balance the cab 12.
  • One end of the ropes 20 are attached to the car 12 while the other ends are attached to the counterweight 18.
  • the ropes 20 are engaged by a drive component 22 located at the top of the hoistway 14 to move the cab 12 between floors 16.
  • elevator operating components such as an elevator controller 24, are located in the hoistway 14 and comiected to the drive component 22 by a control cable 26, for example.
  • the terms elevator operating component as used in this description is not intended to be construed narrowly and should be taken to include elevator controllers, elevator drive machinery, drive system components, governor, hoistway machinery and so forth.
  • the elevator cab 12 includes a car door 28 in a known manner to provide passenger access to and from the cab 12 through outer floor doors 17 for traveling between floors 16.
  • an access door 30 is also located in the cab 12.
  • the access door 30 is positioned in a side 32 of the elevator cab 12 to provide an access way 31 (Figure 2) into the hoistway 14 from inside the cab 12.
  • Figure 2 an expanded interior view of the cab 12 illustrates the access door 30.
  • the access door 30 is shown in an open position thereby providing direct access to the hoistway i4 and the elevator operating components located within it through the access way 31.
  • a main line disconnect switch 32 preferably is located within the hoistway 14.
  • the main line disconnect switch 32 provides a main line power cutoff to the elevator system 10 to provide additional safety during maintenance or service of the elevator system 10.
  • the main line disconnect switch 32 is located adjacent the elevator controller 24 to allow simultaneous access by a mechanic or technician to both the elevator controller 24 and the main line disconnect switch 32.
  • a mechanic need only run the cab 12 to an appropriate position to locate the access way 31 adjacent the desired elevator operating component.
  • the appropriate position relates to the location of the elevator operating component within the hoistway 14 and does not necessarily correspond with the normal position of the cab 12 relative to the floors.
  • the appropriate position preferably is predetermined in the sense that the technician is provided with previously determined information regarding where to position the cab 12 to gain access to a chosen component in the hoistway 14. Once reaching the predetermined position, the mechanic opens the access door 30 to reveal the direct access way 31 to the hoistway 14 interior. The mechanic can then perform maintenance or service on the particular elevator operating component without leaving the enclosed safety of the cab 12.
  • the main line disconnect switch 32 is preferably activated prior to performing maintenance or service of the elevator controller 24.
  • the present invention therefore provides access to elevator operating components and controls that are located within the elevator hoistway without the necessity of the mechanic leaving the cab and entering the hoistway.
