- the roll covering is made from two materials of different hardness properties so as to advantageously form a helical pattern on the outer surface of the roll, whereby the stripes of the softer material act as helical passageways along which the bag of entrained air mentioned in item a) above can pass to the other side of the winding nip and into the interply gap of the roll as through narrow channels, and finally can escape via the ends of the roll.
- the invention is suited for use in all such winder apparatuses in which the roll being wound on a core is supported and/or loaded by at least one roll.
- the roll according to the invention can act as a loading roll for the paper roll being wound or as the winding drum for the paper roll being wound or as a carrier roll for the paper roll being wound, whereby in the latter case the web is passed over the carrier roll to the paper roll being wound through the nip formed between the carrier roll and the paper roll being wound.

- the air layer 15 remaining between the outermost ply 14a and the ply wound preceding the same can thus pass through the nip formed between the carrier roll and paper roll.
- the softer material 12a forms herein a first chevron-like helical pattern starting symmetrically at the center of the roll with respect to its longitudinal axis and extending to both ends of the roll.
- the harder material 12b forms respectively a second chevron- like helical pattern starting symmetrically at the center of the roll with respect to its longitudinal axis and extending to both ends of the roll such that the lands of the latter helical chevron pattern are interlaced with those of the former helical chevron pattern.
- the land width of the helical chevron pattern made from the softer material 12a is about 20- 60 mm, advantageously about 30 mm.
- the land width of the helical chevron pattern made from the harder material 12b is about 40-100 mm, advantageously about 50-80 mm.

- a paper roll 22 being wound is supported by two carrier rolls 20, 21 and the web W to be wound is passed on the outer surface of the periphery of one carrier roll 21, wherefrom the web W is further passed via a nip N formed between the outer surface of said carrier roll 21 and the paper roll 22 being wound onto the paper roll.
- the other earner roll 20 is of the type according to the invention wherein the elastic covering of the roll periphery is comprised of a softer material 12a and a harder material 12b.
- the directions of rotation of the carrier rolls 20, 21 and the paper roll 22 are denoted by arrows in the diagram.
- the geometry of the covering pattern and the hardness properties of the elastic land areas are selected so that the groove formed by the softer material will not become blocked in the nip at small paper roll diameters.
- the harder material must be selected to provide a certain degree of elasticity at larger paper roll diameters in order to minimize the occunence of winding defects at high nip loads.
- the elastic covering materials of different hardness properties can be applied using, e.g., extrusion techniques.
- the extruder can be controlled to move in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the roll at a proper speed while the roll is simultaneously rotated, thus applying a helical pattern.
- two extruders can be operated in parallel, whereby one extruder applies the harder material and the other the softer material. With the help of two parallel-connected extruders, two adjacent helical lands of different hardness properties can be applied directly on the periphery of the roll shell.
