Abstract

1308075 Laminates KIMBERLEY-CLARK CORP 24 Feb 1970 [28 Feb 1969] 8890/70 Heading B5N A composite web material is produced by moving an endless support belt around a stationary mandrel through a plurality of helical turns, helically a web material around the mandrel and on to the belt as it moves around one of the turns so that the material extends at an angle (e.g. 90 degrees) to the longitudinal dimension of the belt, introducing a second further web material in registry with the belt as it moves around a subsequent one of its turns to imprison the first web between the belt and the further web, and slitting the first web of material along the edge of the second web. In Fig. 1 as endless belt 11 supported by rolls and guide bars 21-26 is helically moved round mandrel 10, which preferably has a plurality of air discharge openings therein and is supplied with air under pressure to floating support belt 11, and rotatable carrier 12 helically wraps a and b from rolls 13 and 14 on the surface of the belt at an angle to the longitudinal dimension of the belt. Web c drawn from roll 30 over rolls 31-34 is introduced in registry with belt 11 as it makes another helical turn on mandrel 10 and imprisons webs a and b between web c and the belt, and slitter 40 cuts webs a and b into transverse segments along the edges of web c. If web c is made of material of low inherent strength upper holding belt 71 of air permeable material which passes over guide elements 72-75 is also introduced to mandrel 10 in registry with belt 11 as it makes its last helical turn on the mandrel, composite web a-c is separated from belts 11 and 71 by means of vacuum roll 51 having an outer rotatable shell in which a plurality of circumferentially spaced apertures are located and a stationary inner vane structure which limits the effective area through which the vacuum is drawn to only a portion of the circle through which the shell rotates. Composite web a-c is then directed round heated calender roll 55 into the nip formed with pressure roll 56, over a series of steam drums 57-59, into nip of a finishing calender formed by drum 59 and pressure roll 60, over guide roll 61 and cooling drums 62 and 63 and wound on take-up roll 64. If a non permeable hold down belt 71 is used a separating roll may be provided in advance of vacuum roll 51. Webs a, b and c may be formed of cellulosic tissue, self-sustaining webs of drafted fibres, thread reinforced films or fibre laminates in which a layer of highly-drafted, staple fibres extended to substantially their full length and disposed in parallel are bonded by a spaced pattern of flexible adhesive to at leat one layer of light weight cellulosic tissue. Adhesive may be applied to web c by adhesive printer 65.
