Abstract

L'invention concerne un écran à cristaux liquides alignés verticalement et déformés en hélice qui comprend ce qui suit: un premier (10) et un deuxième (50) substrats de verre dont chacun comporte deux surfaces, les premier (10) et deuxième (50) substrats de verre faisant face l'un à l'autre; une première électrode transparente (20) possédant un premier potentiel et étant formée sur une première surface (12) du premier substrat de verre (10); une deuxième électrode transparente30) possédant un deuxième potentiel, différent du premier, et étant formée sur une première surface (12) du premier substrat de verre (10); une première couche d'alignement vertical (40), formée à la première surface (12) du premier substrat de verre10) sur lequel sont formées les première et deuxième électrodes transparentes (20, 30); une deuxième couche d'alignement vertical (60), formée à la première surface (52) du deuxième substrat de verre (50); et un cristal liquide ferroélectrique70) remplissant l'espace entre les premier et deuxième substrats de verre10, 50) sur lesquels sont formées les première et deuxième couches d'alignement vertical40, 60) se faisant face, le cristal liquide ferroélectrique (70) possédant un pas de l'hélice inférieur à la longueur d'ondes du cristal liquide déformé en hélice en réponse à un champ électrique appliqué à travers les première et deuxième électrodes transparentes (20, 30) de manière à ce que ses molécules fassent des rotations dans un sens déterminé pour arriver à un alignement déterminé et une capacité analogique de niveaux de gris.
